I tried the trial for this game for a couple of days. All i have to say i feel like i am watching tv. I do not feel like i am playing a game at all. All you do is click and watch your ship do the rest. Combat is annoying. Trying to click on the ships as they are moving around is pretty tough. Or you can click on them in the window but if there is a bunch of stuff it gets annoying. Also the death penalty is stupid it takes it too far. It is just a game after all. You dont have to worry about paying for all the cars you wreck in grand theft auto why should i have to buy insurance for my ship in this game? This game is just ridiculous. It is different though i give it that. To me this game is just for people who want power over something but cant do it in real life so they spend so much time in this game for it. Oh so you have alot of isk huh? but you live in your moms basement thats the life right there. Im kidding dont take this the wrong way.

wow, another review/opinion of someone that played for a few hours/couple of days, and couldn't be bothered to have done any homework.
don't take this the wrong way - but eve isn't a dummied down game.
this game must suck immensely... is that why it's in the top 5 western MMOs for subs?
could we please get correspondent writers and moderators, on the eve forum at mmorpg.com, who are well-versed on eve-online and aren't just passersby pushing buttons? pretty please?
why do games have to be so complicated and have so much stuff in it to be fun? Why cant there be a game that is just fun? In soccer all you do is kick a ball around yet people have fun with it. Why cant people just make games to have fun with it instead of lets see how much crap we can put into it?
Games that are "just fun" (WoW anyone) are ultimately boring. Games that have substance and offer nearly limitless opportunities, on the other hand, off er far more than killing endless mobs so that you can get better gear in order to kill endless mobs.
It may take more than a few hours of play and maybe asking for a little guidance ingame or on the EVE forums to see this though.
Ultimately though, EVE is not for everyone, and there is no shame if you don't care for it.
edit: BTW, if all people did in soccer was kick a ball around it would get boring for the vast majority very quickly. Fortunately though, like EVE, there is a lot more to it than just the one thing that you see by looking at the surface.
some people can sit there and play checkers all day long. other people like chess, because it requires you to do a bit more thinking. heck, you can skip a rock across a lake and i'm sure there's some people that would have fun doing that all day. since some people CAN have fun skipping a rock; then, why do we need checkers OR chess?

Sure, there's soccer, but there's also Chess.
edit: dammit, someone beat me to it
Not all games are complicated this just happens to be one of the ones that is and if thats not for you then look somewhere else rather than moan about it. A lot of people love the complexity and steep learning curve because it's more rewarding and satisfying once you are used to the game. I hear runescape is pretty simple and WoW isnt too tough to get the hang of, you should give them a try.
In general though MMORPGs are more complicated than other genres of games. Theres more to it than the point and click of an fps or button masher where players only have to point and click and are differentiated by more by reflexes combined with tactics.
Just because EVE isn't simple it doesn't mean there aren't thousands of games that are.
Yep EvE is like telling a computer to do everything you want it to... Just like a real pod pilot... Makes for gameplay that I keep coming back to once or twice a year... Then one day not logging in and not caring that I didn't.
Can't wait until an MMO that goes for the you're doing all this type game play that is a world.
I find it amazing that by 2020 first world countries will be competing to get immigrants.
I remember playing EVE for a long while.
I didn't do much but trade. I made a butt load of money buying and selling crap all over the universe. Did I have a good shape? Yes. Did I get myself into trouble? Of course!!! Who doesn't want to kill a trader and steal their goods?
The game is more then "Who can level the fastest and get the best OMFG PHAT LOOT!!@!".
This game isn't made for everyone... why do you think there's 200+ MMORPGs out there? Something for everyone.
eve isnt for everyone, you didnt get on with it and there is no shame in that. we're all enjoying doing our internet spaceships thing regardless.
I love the way EVE plays, its such a complex and deep game. it gives me large amounts of control, but automates the annoying parts. god I remember beta before auto-pilot... thank you thank you auto-pilot.
Everything creates huge amounts of negativity on the internet, that's what the internet is for: Negativity, porn and lolcats.
If you don't like it, move on and try something else. There are plenty of casual games that should fit you well.
Many people enjoy vast complexity and risk vs. reward because it suits them.
This game is bad, but NOT because of the death penalty or anything mentioned by the OP.
The game's bad because 90% of people sit around in a station in Jita or mine all day whenever they play.
8% of people rat and run away whenever any real player comes near their ship.
The leftover 2% of people engage in PvP, but those people are players that you'll never have a chance against unless you've played for over a year.
And fanboys, save your breath. I don't care what you have to say about my post, I know it's right and i'm just sharing thoughts with other people.
Because thats the kind of game many players like to play, and those players deserve their game just as much as you deserve your wanna-be fps style mmo games.
It's pretty arrogant of you to say that since you dont find it fun, no one should.
Note that I agree with the fact that its pretty dull as far as how it is played.. the click to move and the AI doing all the playing for you beyond that as far as combat goes is not really my cup of tea. Now if it was the same world with the same scope and complexity.. but made players manually fly their ships and had twitch combat.. now that would rock my world
then present them as your thoughts/opinions, not as fact.
90% of the population does not inhabit jita. i won't bother with the rest; because, if you're wrong about 90% of your post...

Not to mention that who cares if they do sit around in jita or run away from pvp fights? They have a right to play those aspects of the game just as much as you have a right to try to shoot them out of space.. thats the nice thing about eve, it has a little of everything for everyone (except twitch combat.. gr)
Eve is a complex and intresting world.
Too bad the combat sucks. I wouldn't think of playing another game if I didn't get bored with pressing the F keys once and then selecting another target to shoot at.
.... and you have not understood it or attempted to. Why did you make a post about a game after playing it a whole 2 days?
Combat is a lot more than that if your in a decent combat corp. Most alliances just use numbers to win if they can, hence the lack of real strategy.
Like previously stated, because it's simple doesn't mean it's fun. Every game has a fanbase. WoW is for people who don't have a lot of time and can play casually if they want. WoW can be for people who have some time to sink into a game too. From what i've read EVE is more of a technical game. It's for those who want to work harder and have a better sense of pride from having nice things in the game.
I come from FInal Fantasy XI land (2 1/2 years) and FFXI is the same way (so it seems) as EVE. You cant go half-ass in the game and expect to do too much. You gotta bust your butt and put some solid time in to get even what could be considered pretty good stuff. But when you are walking around with big ass stats on gear that's stupid hard to get, you can wear it with pride (or fly it in EVE lol).
I'm actually looking at EVE though as it does seem very technical in nature and you cant beat a 14 day trial. I've read the boards for a good bit and what i've seen is meet as many people as you can as to ask for pointers and such.

You mods can stop censoring my posts. Did you censor his? I stayed on topic of his post. Did he get a warning? You guys issue warnings like people care. I called the guy an asshat. Did he get a warning for trolling? I don't see a "<Mod Edit>" up there. Screw you guys. I'll post what i want to post.
EVE - Sharvala
FFXI - Shazamalicious
Guild Wars - Xavier Lucifer & Charlize the Necro
"Ranged...stuck...tree...15 random words... suck... noob fanboy... I MAKE GUIDE!"
i played it a few more days and here is what i got out of it.
SAME THING. The only thing new i have to say is the community is actually nice overall. I feel like im actually talking to people over the age of 12. It is not like the people who post on this site. (jk by the way) Combat is just click and watch LIterally. I guess that is my problem. I like games to where you have to fight your way to the top, not get the most money and buy your way. To me, people who just want to get all the money they can in a game and buy there way up to the top is just a waste of there life. You cannot do anything in the real world with that money so what is the point? Sure you have a really cool ship in the game but your neighbor next door could care less. I guess ill just have to play another game.
If you feel that combat is just click and watch you are missing most of it. If you look a little below the surface that are several differnt dynamics working that you can ignore if you choose, but they are there and they need to be considered and used if you want to be good at combat.
You say that if you buy your way to the top (I'm not saying you can, I'm just following your premise) that you have nothing that you can use in real life so you've wasted your time. Okay, so tell me, if I play a game where I fight my way to the top, what do I then have that I can use in real life that makes that not a waste of time?
In Guild Wars you would have $100,000.
Doesn't this apply to every mmo ever published?
Actually it's not, even on a one on one basis.. although most of the time against the npc's you dont really need to worry about it. For starters things like the angle of your ship vs the angle of the enemy ships plus the speed you both are going influences how much damage you actually do to them.. If you click the arrow icon on the overview, and go into its settings, you can turn on these extra variable displays.
The other thing is that the combat during squad vs squad combat has a lot of strategy involved.. its not just jump in, blast away, jump out, but rather more like having to bring the right mix of the right ships with the right support and the right battle tactics.
On the other hand it does get dull when you sit around for hours for a 5 minute engagement.. this game's not for the impatient.. which is likely why the community tends to be more mature adult orientated (with exceptions).
I'd still prefer if it was manual/twitch flight/combat. And waiting for 3 months for a new skill to train on its own is pretty boring
You know there is a little tab called overview settings and there you could do all sorts of wonderfull things to your overview.
Death penalty it harsh yes. but than again EvE its a niche game. And regarding combat which you say "it just point and click" ill give you some things you have to consider while in combat from my perspective and valid mostly in PvP (im a gun freak not a missile lover ): range, optimal range, fallout, targets`s velocity, target`s orbiting speed, target`s transversal velocity. Learn what those mean how to use them properly and than come here and say that combat in Eve is simplistic, till than you are just a novice player which "didnt get it" (no offense)
