People expected diamonds and all they recieved were shinny rocks. Maybe later down the road with enough luck, that rock might turn into a diamond. A lot of people have been burned out by playing EVERY SINGLE MMORPG and the problem lies in that. People expect it to be better then the last, but in the long run... they are all the same. There are a lot worse out there. They just wanted a better "WoW", and all they got was a "Meh".
I say give it some time to mature... if it's not any better in a couple months, don't invest your money... if you want to check it out, play at your friends house. You don't have to jump on every MMORPG at launch and expect flawless, perfect material.
you are so wrong man. i went from WoW (2 years) and a bit of EQ2 to AoC then to guildwars.
if i expected more each time i would have been let down by guild wars but i wasn't.
AoC's problems are not centered around bugs or maturity. the problems are with the games design and funcoms philosophy behind it.
There are a FEW good ideas covering a big pile of crap. if you don't believe me then just go play it til you are level 80. because i liked the game up until about level 75. after you have played a good MMO like WOW/EQ2 etc...
After level 75 i noticed a lot of things that were missing. like:
Strategy in dungeons. every fight is exactly the same, mindless and boring.
Armor looked basically the same. and stats were lame or meaningless.
epic gear sells for silver or copper lol.
Zoning is horrible and so is instancing. and traveling in this game = torture.
Not many different kinds of Mobs compared to other mmo's
during leveling you don't get new spells or combo's very often, after level 20 you get maybe 1 every 10 levels.
classes are unbalanced after 5 year of development. if they could not handle all the problems in 5 years i don't think another year will help.
i would get the same staff i had at level 50 that i got at level 20 but with a few better stats.
quest are very boring and simple and a lot of messenger boy quest.
there is nothing to do at 80 and the raids that take 24 players don't give gear as good as crafted items.
the economy is dysfunctional.
there are more i just cant remember right now. and to do a list of bugs would take hours.
in short AoC is crap.
I 100% agree with you!!!!! I love AOC, but it doesn't let me to love it!!!!
Just my opinion but overall the game rocks, graphics are the best of any mmo I have been in. Gameplay is fun and most of the people I have met in game are great. Bad points though are intermittent lag spikes, memory leaks combos not going off or going off and doing little to no damage. Hotbar lag (hit the button and it takes a min). Cutomer service is a joke, billing department is the worst I have encountered in ANY business mmo or otherwise.
If you can get over the bad points though, the game is pretty solid but they definately have some things to work on. If they can fix the bad points I mentioned they will blow the mmo genre away.
Just out of curiosity, what reasons did you have to contact Customer Service and their Billing Department?
Warhammer Online Crnobog, The Black God Chaos Chosen <Guildless>
This game could rock if they took care of the problems listed earlier in this thread. The fatalities in this game are best of any mmo. The graphics are also the best but the rest of this game simply sucks. If anyone wants to play this pos just wait a month or 2 and I bet you can get a lvl 80 off ebay for $20-$30.

account@aoc.com sent them a mail, got an instant copy/paste response read it (though I knew it wouldn't help) and replied explaining AGAIN what the issue was (tried to pay the account last night and as of noon today they STILL haven't fixed it or charged the card even once).
As i ve said before this game will never blow anything away fr one reason. Its core design. Its too small/instanced/ sigle player rpg feel. Too many people don t like this and this is what you get if you pick graphics over gamepleay. If somehow they make the world bigger less instanced(not feel like i m running around in a box) and more MMO feel in general it has hopes, but that won t happen.

This is how Guild Wars was setup.
Small, only 20 levels and highly based around PvP... sounds pretty much the same.
it's funny how 3 different people in this thread can list 12 different things about the game excluding bugs that they don't like. it shows that there is a lot to not like about AoC.i just don't think a year of bug fixing followed by an expansion pak will help at all. Bugs are not AoC's problem.
I don't get the last sentece?
Bugs, no matter how you like it, are always going to be a running issue in EVERY MMORPG! You fix one thing, another breaks.
It just how it goes. If people can't accept this...
I do understand that Age of Conan has more issues then others, but people don't seem to understand the game was JUST RELEASED!
What's not to get? i said it as bluntly as possible. bugs are not the problem with the game the design is.
i think they will get most of the bugs fixed in a year but the game will not be any better than it is now because the design is bad.
they had a good graphics engine not great but good and they said "ok lets make an mmo out of this!"
so they just slapped it together and we have the lipstick on the pig known as AoC.
and BTW i played GW nightfall after i played AoC and i think GW is MUCH better than AoC i have a level19 elementalist/necro
Is it really that bad? or did most people just expect to much from the game?
Yes. Its bad. Its not as bad as when Vanguard first came out bad, but its bad.
Dumbing down of mature content
Very bad community
The community has got me thinking... is it worse than WoW? Or did a lot of the younger WoW Players subscribe?
Community plays a big part in my online gaming you see.

Just the way it was worded...
I had 3 GW accounts and over 3,500 hours. To me, it was the same crap 6000000000000 times. I'm glad you're having fun with GW. Give it a month... beat the game with every class combo, then do it with just a single class about 20 times each.
THen do PvP for months and years... it gets old REALLY fast. And everyone looks the same... which always irked me.
One oof biggest things for me was the game was released with 1/4 of it finished and everything it says on the box the game should have is not in there.
PVP system, dx10, completed crafting system. THe game was unbelievable unstable and they only recently fixed it 2 months later.
The dev team are incompetent and the patching priorities are embarrasing opting to fix particle effects then stability.
Most of the trees in the classes are broken and they hardcore nerf lots of stuff rather then balance. I figured stuff would be not perfect on release. The launch was smooth but the launch client was the worst i have seen of any mmo i have ever played.

Isn't balancing something considered "nerfing" it? Just because you don't like what they are doing, they probably had their reasons to adjust a class.
This game is far from the worst ever released, but a lot of things went wrong. Too much content was promised up front, then not released witht he game, the game engine is just too demanding on about 90% of pc's out there to really play it effectively without having serious lag issues, a lot of the stuff that is in the game is broken or just isn't designed very well. For a game that claimed several awards from the media and from conventions, it just turned out to be an ok mmo that most people can't even play due to P.C. hardware restrictions. The world economy effects gaming as well as everything else, and the days when someone is going to go out and pay 2k for a new gaming pc just to play a half finished mmo are over, if they were ever there to begin with.

This pretty much sums up my feelings and those of most of my guild. It wasn't the bugs that drove everyone away, we expected those. It was the design. It's just not a well thought out game. The gameplay is bland, the "innovative" combat system is really just extra button mashing, the world is disjointed due to the excessive instancing and on and on.
I followed the game for over 2 years......bought the early entry...bought collectors edition..quit after 3 weeks..and will never go back.More than that ....FC destroyed my trust in their company .Seems their stock holders have similar feelings too.
I think it is painted out to be a bit worse than it actually is. Although a large part of that is because of the fans and funcom itself. Funcom promised the stars, the earth and the moon and delivered a rock with some moss on it. While the fans kept saying that everything promised was in, then when proven false, claim the next magic patch will fix everything.
Graphics - Quite good for an mmo, but poorly optimized coding leads to bad memory leaks and the like.
Combat - Meh. They trumpet the death of auto attack however all they did was add another layer to all combat (except casters). You still map abilities to the keyboard and fire them off using a number key, but then in order to actually use the ability you have to use combos, for example q,2,1,e. But you have to wait, the speed at which you fire off the combo will not work, you have to follow the onscreen queues.
Questing - Exact same as what we have seen before. Kill x of y and bring z back to quest giver. Take a from person g to person h etc etc etc
PVP - mildly entertaining if you are playing one of the overpowered classes as class balance is FAR from implemented yet. Which means expect many many many more nerfs to come.
Seiges - Supposedly getting better, but still not working as intended
Border Kingdoms - Poor maps and still feature incomplete
The game has some promise if funcom is able to deliver. Past track record for Funcom does not indicate that AoC will ever live up to the hype that funcom heaped upon the game, however. They are currently in a cycle of nerfbat hell, which is (for those keeping score at home) an excercise in futility and generally does more harm to a game than good. They are still scrambling to try and implement everything promised months ago and, in general, failing at it while continuing to make more promises. For those on the fence, I would say wait. If they are actually capable of delivering then kudos to them.
The game makes an amazing first impression IMO. It has a lot of great concepts, and Tortage is rockin'.
But, over a month or two, it ages poorly. They have recently started undoing their Mature content, and they've allowed volunteers with no training to moderate their forums. There is basically no room for customer service or customer feedback at FC, and the game is dying because they've become Nazis.

I fucking hate the comb system. If they changed that one thing I would be a lot less critical of this game. It has bugs they always do when they release, but that combat system just sucks balls and always was a bad idea.
"War is cruelty. There is no use in refining it. The crueler it is, the sooner it is over."
The problem here is not if its a great game or not, 'cause i really think this game rocks. But, Damn!!!, I can't play an unfinished game... even with all the patients of the world...
You just cant play it for your personal principals... Its as if Funcom is making fun of us releasing a game thats not to be released at that time, and not even by now... Thats a w8st of OUR money and OUR time...
Personally I have just resubbed for another month. The graphics are awesome for an MMO and I'm loving the combat system. Yes there are still plenty of bugs and a lack of high level content but this is very common on MMO releases.
This game has alot of potential and I can't think of any other MMO I'd rather play right now, which isn't saying much I know!
WAR could be a disaster as well. I mean they've already cut back on content (cities) and player classes!
AOC has major wrinkles sparingly spread out through the entire fabric of the game. No single issue is entirely game breaking but as a whole they can really be frustrating . It's kind of like buying a les paul and receiving a Strat , Both are equally playable , but nothing beats the fine tuned craftmanship of a Gibson .If spit and polish , Backed by some stinky elbow grease is your thing stay away , If you just want to write a tune go right ahead , just don't complain you weren't warned.
For every minute you are angry , you lose 60 seconds of happiness."-Emerson
Yes and no ? I guess it is just a matetr of what you like. When I tried the game for the first month it was just ok.
Things I liked.
1. Graphics are nice.
2. it is just different which I thought was a plus.
3. Character classes are fun but some classes are just too overpowering such as Tempest of Set.
4. Storyline in Tortage was pretty good.
5. Destiny quests are fun.
Things I didn't like..
1. Too easy to level.
2. Performance issues.
3. Crafting served no purpose. Loot drops seemed better than what you can craft.
4. Noone buys from the auction house because almost everything is easy to get.
5. I don't mind some instances but this game is way too instanced for my taste. Constanly having to zone in each area is just a turn off.
6. Pvp was pointless. Running around ganking people is not my idea of real pvp. Building keeps and town cities served no real purpose. Spending time getting resources for your towns/keeps is a waste of time. Much better things I can do for a $15.00 montly fee.

I fucking hate the comb system. If they changed that one thing I would be a lot less critical of this game. It has bugs they always do when they release, but that combat system just sucks balls and always was a bad idea.

But isn't that what the game said it was going to be? And you STILL bought it... DUH!
what? they never said "crafting will be pointless". "all the zones will annoy you" etc..
in fact it was tauted as the next great mmo. no way of knowing if it were true unless you buy it.
