AO isnt a browser game but the AO classic is free to play and is 7 years old so it runs on computers that old fairly well.
Never underestimate the power of stupid people in large groups.
I'd recommend RuneScape....but since the community is horrible it wouldn't be a good choice...
Hmm, another browser game...Ogre Island? That's the only other browwser based game I can think of.

lol. His son is going through CoD4 withdrawal, and he wants to put him on Runescape.
CoD4 is pretty much the pinnacle of modern-setting shooters at the moment. Looks incredible on good hardware, plays incredibly well. It's about par for a shooter community, with all the good and bad that comes with it.
Runescape plays like shit, looks like absolute shit, and is just shit in general in every other way too. Some people like it, but if your son is a big CoD4 fan, I doubt he's gonna be the kind of person that likes to fool around in the wildy, or whatever the Hell the fellows at Runescape are doing now.
Thankfully, technology marches on. Your son likes good shooters, you need a free, browser-based game, and the two do collide. Or they will collide. You're unfortunately a few months too early.
You could see if you could get an account for id software's Quake Live beta. It's basically Quake III Arena in a browser. Man, I used to love that game. It was _the_ game for competitive and casual deathmatch play for a while. I doubt I could ma people with the railgun the same way I could before, but meh. Old by today's standards, but honestly, the gameplay probably remains as good now as it was then.
I think it's quakelive.com, google Quake Live if it's not. Sign up and hopefully you can get in.
The other such game to watch for is by Garage Games. Garage Games is the modern day incarnation of Dynamix. You hopefully know them from Tribes and Tribes 2. Your son might not have played either, but those were two shooters with a fanatical following, myself included, with probably the steepest skill curve of any shooter to date.
Anyhow, Garage Games has a new site up called Instant Action. It's basically browser-based action games that are actually good, as opposed to complete shit like everything else out there that runs in a browser. The particular game you're looking for is Fallen Empire: Legions. It's focused on a very narrow aspect of Tribes 2, as opposed to being a full recreation, but Tribes-style dueling is something else, even by itself. Skiing, jetpacks, many of the same weapons. I'm not sure if Legions is ready to play just yet. The last time I checked, they were very late in their beta, like Quake Live.

You'd be surprised.....
Also, I was just naming possible browser based games. I enjoy shooters and I also enjoy playing MMOs, people can like more than one thing (just in case you didn't know).
Also, considering he is of a younger age, I wouldn't be surprised if he enjoyed RuneScape. Considering most of RS' player base is of a younger age, I could easily see a young CoD4 player jumping into RuneScape.

addictinggames.com?
thx for the replies.
tried that legions site for the beta FPS game...looked cool. but need a 2.0 shader card to play it.
i was surpised how many flash games that are out there. had him playing zelda, mario and space invaders for awhile.
perhaps ill find the original final fantasy that launched my gaming career all them years back with the original nintendo
speaking of, how about a good emulator? im not keen on that tech but he'll be here for a while w/o my hulk of a rig so the more options he (and I) have, the better.
any emulator options for us?
regarding COD4...he's eight and im not bragging- he plays on Fallen hardcore(clan) server and finishes top 5 consistently. he's a bad ass. with the new house we'll be buying(2nd pc) he says he's going to kick my butt when we play together...should be hella cool.
