If you never ever played WoW before I would recommend that.

Having only played WoW and LotRO, I voted for Lord of the Rings

Reason:  The game is immerses you in its pve content better...Obviously WoW has more end game PvE content, but that's because WoW has been around several years longer than LotRO has...The story driven gameplay, combined with some very nice combat sounds and some pretty decent animations, put the game a step above WoW's PvE imo.

Your argument is like a two legged dog with an eating disorder...weak and unbalanced.

I never could get into Lotro...ive tried twice.

If pvp will change your opinion at all.  WoW, people bash it all the time but it was a great game, its just that I, like many others have played enough of it and move to other games for something different. LoTRO is a great game as well. I would choose it over any MMO out right now if you are WoW'd out. I wouldn't even consider Vanguard an option.

    PvE- Lotro

    PvP - WoW

If you have a machine that can handle it, then Vanguard would be the best choice if you have previous experience in MMOs.

If you are still pretty new to MMOs then LOTRO would be the best choice since it is a very linear game and has very easy content.

I have played all three of the MMOs that you listed and I tend to stay away from WoW, mostly because of the community there. The game itself is decent for an entry level MMO but having such a poor community really killed it for me. The community for LOTRO and Vanguard are about the same, very helpful.

I played WoW for 2 years, I have played LotRO for awhile, I play AoC now and starting to get a little bored with it, So guess what I thought I would stick in Vanguard since they are doing the come back and check out what we have changed/fixed and I am liking it a lot Vanguard has so much more depth then those games. I am not going to lie I like AoC alot and LotRO is a really good game just not for me, it bored me really fast. WoW really that game needs to be done... I enjoyed it for 2 years the last year was on and off a lot but all in all. You pick I think they are all pretty good games.

Well, I've only played WoW and Vanguard, though of the two, I'd have to say:

    - If you want a basic, complete PvE game that runs smooth, play WoW.

    - If you want a unique game that offers more than your average MMO, in exchange for reliability, go with Vanguard.

Though, my vote goes to EverQuest 2 for good times in a PvE world.  Heroic opportunities and stand-by spells/abilities makes combat a more engaging experience than simple point and click action, the questing system offers some originality through the various ways your can find and accept new quests (i.e. it involves more than just making a bee-line for the nearest NPC with the floaty quest-icon over his head), the world is expansive and beautiful, and there is an extremely well-thought and well-planned wealth of lore to uncover along your journeys, if you happen to be in to that sort of thing .

If I had to choose between those 3, I would go WoW.

LotR is way to scripted, Vanguard is way to incomplete.

Hard to say on those cause depends on how you play. For me, I have tried wow atleast 4 times now..this last time I managed to get to 60s but..the community is aweful. I ended up soloing 98% time. If you join with a group of your friends then it would be maybe great. Lotro, I am trying it again for second time while I am also playing conan and a private server of an old game that will not be named lol . I like conan a lot but am only in 48 level so who knows later.

You can't go wrong with either WoW or LOTRO.  Both have good PvE.  LOTRO is geared more towards low fantasy and WoW aims for high fantasy.  I think the end game and PvP are much better in WoW, but both games deliver.  The story line in LOTRO are very entertaining and well written where WoW has a much bigger world.  Both games have good populations, offer lots of character customization and have a lot of polish that really bring the games alive.

Vangaurd is a decent game that caters more to those who want an EQ style experience and are burned out on most other MMOs.  Is doesn't have good PvP at all and the PvE is so so at best.  The game has a real rushed feeling to it, but the worst part is that what Vanguard has to offer right now is most likely all it will ever have to offer.  The game just doesn't have enough resources to continue developement at a reasonable speed.  It is like playing a game that has a dead end sign on it.  Unless you are bored with just about every other MMO out there really isn't a good reason to play VG.

If you are looking for a very none-instance oriented game that has a huge world then I suggest you check out Vanguard. There are plenty of nay-sayers out there but if you just wait till august then they are going to release the free trial: D Game has a lot to offer for PVE, has around 12 classes and plenty of dungeons that are surprisngly well designed. It probably has some of my favorite dungeons in any game. Very, very fun game. Also has little side things like DIplomacy and the crafting is fantastic if your into that sort of thing.

LOTRO is awesome as well, very well written, awesome graphics, fun classes...it has everything. Though most of the dungeons were only decent to me..with an exception to a couple.  Very fun game overall, played it since release and still having a ball!

World of Warcraft...ehh skip this one. I played it for 2 years (Donno how I lasted) but it went downhill drastically after BC....so yeah. skip/

WOW has the best PVP of the bunch, and if you've never played it before, give it a try.

As for PVP centric games, my vote is with EVE which I'm currently playing.

    This is a no-brainer..

LOTRO can get very boring and almost no PvP. I tried SO HARD to love this game, but in the end, everything reminded me of the movie and I am sick of this franchise.

Vanguard has recently improved. HOWEVER, there are a lot of fans who will come on here saying this game is the most amazing game ever made. It still has many, many issues and design flaws. I tried it for two weeks and could not get over the flaws.

If you have not tried any of these, try WoW. The best of PvE and PvP.

  • DuilyonDuilyon Member Posts: 326

WoW has horrible PVP its not even balanced at all for PVP and when they TRY to balance for PVP they ruin PVE as well..

Try LOTRO if you want PVP they change monster classes to balance PVP not your PVE class.

As many have written if you haven't played WoW thats the easy answer.

I have played WoW, LotRO and VG.  The order listed is about the fun factor for the games.  WoW is dated technology wise but its colourful and its zones are very distinct.  PvE wise the instances are great and flow well.  Quests will carry you right to 70 and you will be deleting many along the way cause you simply out level them.  The classes again are distinct, no two feel the same.

LotRO is similar but feels less connected, less responsive and the 'story' is done terribly.  I found getting into the lore of WoW much easier than LotRO since WoW does it through quests on an ongoing basis and not start and stop like LotRO.  Many more outdoor instances in LotRO but there are well done.  World size is smaller but not cramped.

VG had responsive combat and unique classes.  However it has no story, tiny world, low quest content, no real flavour to its dungeons and has both bugs and performance issues.  Its fun, but has a lot of flaws compared to the other two.  But I did enjoy my Raki Disciple for the months I did play.  Really if you think VG looks interesting... play EQ2.  They are quite similar and frankly EQ2 has more content, more varied gameplay, larger world, stable though not quite as immersive combat.  But the casting bar for melee doesn't bug everyone.

So umm err ya there you have it.

    WoW>LotRO>VG

Currently I'm playing City of Heroes and Warhammer Online.

PVE wise?  LOTRO, hands down.  If you aren't up on Tolkien lore you will be missing out on a lot of of the more subtle lore in the quest lines though.

I have zero connection to WoW lore.  I find it bland, watered down (description wise), copycatted, and too full of pop culture to be considered remotely emerssive.

  • SoludeSolude Member UncommonPosts: 691

All I know about WoW lore is from WC2 and WC3 cutscenes.  All I know from LotRO lore is the movies.  Yet WoW's method of story telling is more effective despite having far less information about it up front.

LotRO does not have the content of WoW either.  I had to run instances and grind traits in LotRO to reach 50.  In WoW all you have to do is the quests you like because there are enough that if its not your cup of tea just drop it.

But I've played WoW to death so I look to other MMOs until there is something new to do in WoW.  Guess same could be said for LotRO but Book content usually only takes a few nights to go through.  Hopefully the expansion will add a solid month and two like TBC did for WoW.

I too have played all three of your choices thoroughly and enjoyed all for a time. For pvp, wow is going to be your best choice. I had fun with Lotro at first but got fairly bored around level 30 and quit. I'm playing Vanguard after a 12 month hiatus after playing for a month a launch and am having a great time. pvp is pretty much non-existant in vg but that's not what i'm playing for. yes there are some issues with the game but surprisingly, it's the best thing available within the mmorpg genre at this time. you can pickup a copy online on ebay or amazon for about $5.

i'd try all three and choose the one you enjoy most. for me at the moment it's vanguard.
