Opening Night of EQ2....gamers paradise or buggy frustration?

wingmanwingman Member CommonPosts: 5

My apologizes if this has been a thread already.

What are you folks planning to do opening night? Is it going to be a 28 hour marathon session over the holiday weekend? Despite any bugs, patches, updates (I still remember the original launch...ugh)?

Or are some of you going to just duck out for a week, wait for the dust to settle and THEN start playing in ernest?

I'm just curious to see how quickly some of you are willing to let your addiction take hold again :)

As a european we will probably be playing the game a couple of weeks later then the rest, so there will probably already be an economy, some higher level players, and less people making a first caracter at the same time.

1 thing I know is this: I am gonna enjoy every single level, do as much quests, skills as possible, see and fight in all zones that I can, the level grind I did in everquest just to become more powerfull will definatly not happen again, hitting max level sucked and I missed out on a lot of quests/zones/mobs (that I later redid with my alts, but now I wanna enjoy it with my main).

Agreed I tore through EQ1 and bypassed a lot of the content to reach the endgame as quickly as possible. I still played EQ1 for almost 5 years though.

This time around I'll take things a bit more slowly and try not to compete with the powerlevel freaks.

I've recently relocated from the US to the UK and am a bit sad we'll be seeing the game later than the states, but I think that everything will be at square 1 when we do get it as no one else will be on the euro servers :)

Personally, I would wait a week or two before getting into any game coming out, though more so in a MMO, and even more so in an MMO of EQ2's size/popularity which is going to have a huge number of people all trying to get in at once which will cause tons of lag, lock up login servers, and make doing quests/leveling, etc a royal PITA as everyone will be trying to do the same quests at the same time, a problem further exacerbated by having only two starting cities, so those 100k or so people won't be as spead out as they would in say WoW with 6ish very seperate starting areas.

I could, of course, be totally wrong. Perhaps the devs will be ready *this time* for the 10 metric f**ktons of login attempts, and the lag, the ksing, and all the other BS. And maybe the ambrosia of the Gods themselves will rain down upon us all at the opening of the live servers, peace will break out in the Middle East, and I will awaken to find myself laying between Angelina Jolie, and Neve Campbell.

But somehow, you know, I think it will just be another run of the mill MMO launch with all the attendant craptacularosity that has been in every other MMO launch.

I suppose you could say it's simply cynism, but in the case of MMOs, I'd say it's more than warrented.

Though, personally, by the time the your glass is half empty, someone should have already ponied up for another round. ::::20::

Well I'm going to hope for the best. I mean... you'd have to be an intellectually stunted dwarf to not be prepared for the bombardment of people logging in on opening day.

I think this time they might actually be prepared for it....

    Maybe...

I'll be online minutes after it goes live! I was online with EQ1 and for all the frustration it was the most exciting time in MMORPG history.

I also believe that it is pretty unrealistic to use that as an idea of what the eq2 launch will be like 5 years later. Back then EQ was a new idea from a small company with no idea just how big it would be. Today they have a huge backing, 4 previous launches under their belt and presumably a far better idea how to launch a game without major issues.

So I'd say that I'd be surprised if there were anything other than minor hickups on launch.

Now it's run by a big company with a record for custoemr support that is bottom of the barrel, I'm gonna ply EQ2 because it look sdamn good, but if they can't get there act together it will be a short lived account.

not saying this to bash SOE...but there is no way the first day will be a gamera paradise...

not in a million years.  The chances of winning the lottery or getting struck by lightening would be better than having a semi-smooth first 2 days.

SOE is notorious for horrble start ups.  SWG was pretty much offline for 2 days.  Anyone remember first day of SWG? lol...so many of us downloaded Mozzila Web browser because IE would freeze up halfway through the registration process.  Registration took about 4 hours to do...then when you got in game, the game would freeze and lock up every 11 minutes.

The servers didn't become quite normal for aother 2 days.

I think EQ2 will be the same way.

I, myself will be buying EQ2...however, I'm not gonna play it until at least 3 days after release.

I really, really hope it is a smooth launch.  I am in the WoW Stress Test and it is smooth as butter.  I know if the EQ2 (and I am an EQ2 fanboi) launch is anything like Anarchy Online's or SWG's was I will not play the game.  Just my 2 cents.

After 5 years I think they've had plenty of time to plan for the worst. Especially after SWG. I'm still keeping my fingers crossed though as I did preorder.

I'll take the day off and not have to worry about the kiddies since they will be in school image

You will be on the same time as everyone else lagging up the servers and you know it!

Just like the rest of us. Your no better and this is no Flame! Just admit it! LOL image

Well, in hopes that I still somehow get accepted into the Beta Test- it would be nice to oversee that all bugs that are easily found have been taken care of, and we are simply left with the obscure odds / ends here and there.

That said, I would hope that by then my machine is prepped for EQ2, and I'd be ready to start playing seriously on the first day of release. :D

I expect the first night of EQ2 to be very slow and tedious with a few crashes and possibly some bugs.  I don't believe any of this will be SOEs fault.  Its simply impossible to create a game that is completely flawless and fast with this large a number of people signing on.  Its not fair to expect them to be able to create a server invincible to lag under these circumstances, in fact I'd be suprised if it didn't crash.  The login server has it even worse off than the game too!

That being said:  I will be right there along with my guildmates 5 minutes after the game goes gold.  We plan to access the hardest content before anyone else, and being an officer I need to be among the first of the first.  It will be a tough first 48 hours but I plan to make the best of it!

I dont think there will be much lag at all for two reasons. There will HOPEFULLY be a beta that will stress the servers. AND HAS ANYONE PLAYED THE WoW STRESS TEST?! Almost no lag at all. I think they are developing technology to where lag is not as much of a problem as it used to be. Newer and faster servers will probably be used. I have a feeling this will run smoothly.

I anticipate an opening night Better than SWG, (I hope Sony learned from that); however, I anticipate registration server problems simply due to the HUGE population who will be wanting to register at the same time.  This could go on for a couple days.

Once in game, I would like to believe that things will be relatively smooth with only a few server outages.

It will be the single largest MMORPG launch in history.  If they dont already know that.. then there will be problems.
