In terms of collection quests from animals, such as bear claws from bears, there will be none of this.
Also, I'd like to add that, if you kill 2,500 bears, and someone has a quest that asks you to kill 5 bears, you'll automatically complete the quest as the npc see's you've already killed that many bears.
For more information, go to youtube and search for "Warhammer Online Bears" and "Warhammer Online Public Quests" the bears one should be a small podcast done by Paul Barnett, and is quite easily his most famous podcast.

As for how long to take it to 40 we really don't know, game is in beta and probably people can level faster right now for testing purposes. It's possible that after release leveling speed will be slower (or maybe not), but we really don't know.
from what i played at comic con it is fairly slow.....somewhat...i mean if you do one quest at a time it will be slow.....a mix of PVE and RVR it wont be too bad.....
but some people will claim it is to slow..however there is only 40 levels.... so it all evens outs
i think it will be an enjoyable experience for anyone who likes MMOs and then at level 40 there is RVR and some dungeons.
With only 40 ranks, if each rank took an average of 3 hours, it would only take 120 hours or 5 days /played to hit cap. If we go with 5 hours per rank, that is 200 hours or a bit over 8 days /played.
That is not really much time at all, considering an MMORPG is designed to be played for years, and the average player plays at least 15 hours per week. At that rate, if we assume 200 hours, at about 3 months max rank should be achieved. For the 30 hours per week crowd, which is common, it is under 2 months. For the psychotic, live-at-home, unemployed, pale-skinned basement-dwellers, they could do a 200-hour 1-40 run in under one month.
As for how long it actually takes, well, I wish I could say (though to be honest, I only have the vaguest clue myself).
Keep in mind, since most of the game's elements (scenarios, PQs, RvR, keeps, etc.) can be accessed basically as soon as you start playing, the incentive to get to 40 to get to the "real" game is not so strong as it is to max in other games, because you are already playing the real game from day one. By not holding out on the player, there is no reason to not take your time and enjoy leveling up and seeing and doing everything.
Also, beta players, and those who benefit from their knowledge, will level up the fastest as they will have already been playing the game for up to a year in advance. Past that, people who focus purely on the fastest route to 40 will of course get there far, far earlier than those who read the lore, flesh out their ToK, explore, craft, RvR, etc. Even if you took two players who play the same amount, they could level at vastly different rates, depending on what they do with their time.
Ultimately, a better question, in my opinion, is not how long it takes, but how enjoyable it is. If you are timing yourself to 40, clearly the game has failed because you are not enjoying it enough to just play without a numeric goal at the end and a grind in between.
Not really my thing, but as Mark Jacobs confirmed recently, you'll be able to lvl to 40 from the start by just RvR'ing, which will please a lot of people
You also have 80 renown ranks which can only be obtained through RVR, as well as leveling your guild etc etc. There's a lot more than just the standard 40 ranks.
Yup, it will be very hard to be bored with all those PQ's, RvR, Keeps, etc.

That's the problem I've had in the past with games like WoW. Eventually you hit a point int he game play were, simply put, the fun begins to drain away. For me it happened when I realized that I was grinding away at the BGs so I could get some semi-descent gear because I never had any time to find group to hit any of the dungeons. I realized how tedious the whole thing had become and I just stopped playing. I really hoping that WAR, with all the different senarios, PQs, Tome Unlocks, open world RvR, and all of the other little things will keep this from happening again.
I'm gonna make a quick note here, (if this has already being brought up sorry) First of all there will be part collectors and stuff, not all the quests are done passively as you go killing along and yes there are still typical kill collectors where you just gotta kill the mobs, I think this was a slight miss conception people have that all the quests work that way, as for PQs this system is really great (Imo) PQs techically speed up with more players...instead of slowing down and give you XP for finshing them + gear and other rewards, if there are too many people on one PQ, I imagine you can just go to a diffrent part of the zone and find one less populated do it and get more XP. Not to mention I bet while doing a PQ your knocking down another quest that is possibbly in the area right? And lets add RvR and Tome Unlocks you will prolly be hoping you spent more time in the previous area, not to mention you can travel from diffrent race tiers... and do quests a there if you run out and don't feel like doing RvR.

This simply is not true. There are collect blah blah from this furry creature quest, and in most quests, you do not automatically get the reward if you killed x amount before hand. You have to kill them again.

They'd probably minimize the 'obtain bear paws from ostriches' quests though. They know we hate those kinds =P

But still there is one thing i realy one hope to see in a game, and that is "You what you get", meaning, if i kill a animal, i get skind, blood and other stuff. ( maby laern how to skind animals ) If i kill a soilder - like person, whit shield and axe, and leather armor. plus what ever they randomly may have on them. it drop.
