DC Online! Poll

LoboMauLoboMau Member UncommonPosts: 395

Watch out! Here comes DC Online!! Who will win? DC Online, Champions Online and dont forget City of Heroes! For now I think DC Online has the upper hand because of the stories and background of the DC Heroes, because lets face it who is more popular? DC or Champions? But in the end I think what will trully count will be the quality of the game!

One:  the people working on Champions already have a great MMO under their belt.  They've shown us they know what they are doing.  That doesn't mean that the DC people don't, but they have to prove it.

Two: story is nice and necessary but it is not a primary factor on which game people play (LOTRO, the  Matrix and SWG are not the kings of MMOs, for example).

It too early to tell, one as to admit that the superhero MMO market is an untaped one, and one that isnt that known too.

at first i tought it was strange to see DC online as in fighting along side Superman, Batman, ect ect, but then i look at CoH and you do fight with and against the likes of the freedom phalanx, so instead of having a made up team of char created for the game you get heroes that are known.

As far as both game goes i dont think most people even know much of the games mechanics.

The only thing that gives me a heartburn is that SOE is in charge of DC Online.

SOE is having issues keeping talent on the DC project, let alone in the company.  Combine that with their past track record and my expectations are really low for DC online.  Most likely it will be further ruined by micro transactions, in game advertising everywhere, addition subscription fees for some wacked out premium content model and half a dozen other lame money grabs.

players should consider the gameplay instead of the universe the game is set in.

However, a good gameplay + good universe is a win. I think Champions Online has what it takes.

However, my vote goes to CoH... this game has a sustainable number of subscriptions for long years.

don't want to sound like a hater; but, let's look at facts.

champ - jack is running the show.  jack is the driving force behind COx up until i8?  at any rate, look at the updates to COx while jack was running the show and look at the updates now that jack has left the building.  HIS vision is what matters -- players be damned (brad mcquay anyone?).

DC online - i'm not someone that goes "hey, this person screwed up 8 different widgets, surely he's learned from his mistakes these past 10 years and THIS widget will work GREAT!"  smed and the great folks at SOE -- if they have ANYTHING to do with this game, i.e. station pass - it'll be craptastic.  even setting my expectations to THAT level, i'll just shrug and go "oh well" a year after retail release.

city of -- they've made a crapton of GOOD changes to the game since jackie left the team.  if they get this new expansion out sometime soon and DEPENDING on what it contains... it could really kick some major ass.  perhaps some space adventures, moon bases, new neutral/mercenary ATs, more epic ATs, perhaps vehicles???  who knows.

could we please get correspondent writers and moderators, on the eve forum at mmorpg.com, who are well-versed on eve-online and aren't just passersby pushing buttons? pretty please?

  • ipod80gbipod80gb Member Posts: 90

agree with above. The City Of X expansion better come out quick for the game to stay on the same track as DC and Champions.

You forgot to put the "I don't like Super Hero MMO" option........

I don't want to be funny, but I feel that there is little interest in this kind of games, so it would have been interesting to understand how popular they are, since we soon gonna have 3 to choose from........

Although those 3 might have slightly different gameplay, the concept is the same as CoH, I don't understand the need of 2 other similar games.

    CoH covers it all IMO.

The same reason there is the need for 500 fantasy genres. This is a game industry, there is always room for more variety, and it is ridiculous to believe otherwise.

I want to play a superhero mmo, i will probably play diablo 3, warhammer online and champions. I would rather have a bad superhero game out then no superhero game. I odnt play space games either, that doesnt mean i believe eve shouldnt exist.

youhave no idea how much interest there is in a certain genre.

DC is obviously making use of the popularity of Superman, Batman and the rest of them to draw people to this game. But if the gameplay blows, no one will ever stick to it.. they will return to CoX.

I picked Champions only because Cryptic's track record. That being said. I am hard pressed to figure how they will make a superhero game different from City of Heroes/Villans

  • HogemannHogemann Member Posts: 21

I pick Champions online because of the game's look, Imo the cartoon look its awesome and i got bored with CoH/V because I waited so long for the envyroment destruction and that did'nt come yet.

Any way Im looking foward for Dragon Ball Online :]

Since SOE is in charge of DC:Universe, I'm gonna have to say goodbye to that game, and give Champions a try instead. Besides, CO's graphics look a lot more like a comic book, DC's look like CoH's graphics, except that a lot of the characters seem to be set on the "Big" option that CoH has since they all look like they're on steroids... not a good move.

  • bobajangobobajango Member Posts: 43

the burning question i have is how SOE could even get another IP after the SWG.

  • Daffid011Daffid011 Member UncommonPosts: 7,945

SOE got the DC license when they bailed out The Matrix online. Sadly the SWG mess hadn't really reared its ugly head yet.

The only folks that have left the DC online project is two dead weight EX SWG developers...they were shown the door.  Currently the project has some top talent that isn't going anywhere until the project ships at least.

Aside from Jim Lee , they have Dave Parker Ex CoH developer and designer of some of the best missions in that game, as well as Jeff Smith Ex Bioware Wiz Kid, and Jon Sato of Squaresoft.  The project is well funded and well monitored by DC..it the sort of situation that Cryptic would have killed for, but the hitched their wagon to fickle Microsoft that kills every MMO that can not Guarantee WoW like subscribers and a development cycle of 24 months

  • Daffid011Daffid011 Member UncommonPosts: 7,945

Are you so sure about that?  I guess all those people leaving for 38 studios and other companies must not count. Neither does all those job openings for core positions on the SOE site.  *shrug*

Top talent....  A little to much SWG blood on that team for it to be taken to serious.  Not that I think any company would kill to be in SOEs shoes right now, but you keep the torch light burning and maybe that ship you are waiting on will come in.

My personal vote goes to CO. Champs online will definatly take a win....not sure how they plan to be the first action mmo (it wont be a button masher will it

I look at it like this. CoX had the best character creation system..EVER... when i got bored i would spend hours just perfecting costumes, it was amazing. Now not only does CO have that character creator, they also give you the option to customize skills/spells. That is what wins me over...just the curiosity

  • Tuck2000Tuck2000 Member Posts: 361

Champs hands down they did it once and Champions will benefit from all the prior work done on COH and COV.

  • Wizziokid091Wizziokid091 Member Posts: 20

Champions for me for a few reasons:

.It's made by Cryptic who already have one of the best mmo's made IMO

.SOE pissed me off by destroying SWG so i don't have high hopes for DCUO sadly

.DCUO wont have as good character customization as CO or COX

    .CO looks allot better

    and so on

BUT! their is one thing i would play DCUO for and that is to kill Superman!

    MMO's iv played etc:

    Currently playing:
    .Lotro

    Retired From best to worst:
.CoX, SWG, AoC, WoW, Eve online, R.O.S.E online, Kal Online, Runescape, Other F2P mmo's

    Waiting for:
    .SGW
    .Champions Online
    .DCUO
    .Star Wars TOR

The game is currently on its fourth or fifth lead designer, and its on its third SOE producer.  They have lost several other dev team members from the beginning of the game's development.  DCUO is going to be a huge mess.

Totally agreed on the DCU look, there. Did you look at the video this site posted some days ago?

When the guy says "this character here is a speeder", and the demonstrator turns on superspeed, tell me if you didn't see an EXACT copy of CoH's superspeed power, in aesthetic terms at least. With all the possible ways of conveying the sensation of moving at supernatural speeds, they just HAD to use the same graphics CoH uses? Please.

  • DouhkDouhk Member Posts: 1,019

Probably CO or nothing... tbh DC isn't even interesting me in the slightest bit. For some reason I just really, really don't like the idea of playing with other super heroes that already exist against villains that already exist. I kind of feel like the creativity and uniqueness of my own character is sucked out of me; as if my hero is just a sidekick to the real heroes. That isn't how a superhero game should be played.... of course, all games should be designed as if you are not the hero. It simply doesn't work in an MMO when everyone is the main protagonist. I just don't like the idea of playing with already made characters... just doesn't sound good to me.

Plus, with the video shown, it looks pretty bad in the animation and graphics sense. Reminds me greatly of what CoX looks like now, not that that isn't fun, but I don't want another CoX with a new name; I'd rather continue playing CoX. Then again, WAR looked like crap 6 months ago and has improved drastically with graphics. I think I'll like CO more because of how they plan on making powers and the interesting approach to the graphics. Not sure if it will work out well, right now they look O.K. in certain screenshots and horrid in others. But if improved upon the style can shine.

Plus it helps that this is being designed by the people who made CoX. Gotta give a huge bonus to that over SOE (heh...). And.... of course... one of the best features in my eyes about what CoX originally brought...

Extreme character customization. One of my favorite features in CoX, probably improved upon vastly in CO.

image If only SW:TOR could be this epic...

  • all i can say is, DC online was a good concept but as soon as they made look cartoony i lost interest in it. it looks cheezy & old like a poorly drawn comic. champions isnt much better but at least its better looking and has some appealing qualities.

Champions online, is cartoony but made by the same people as CoX is i dont know yet if its going to be the same old grind fest that city of heroes is. mission after mission. airy story (almost none existant) if they make some lore and background like some of the better mmo's have today it would be great. like if they had the marvel universe as background it would have been amazing.

as for cox i played it for a while but its like is said just a grindfest with no story.

I had to Vote City of Heroes, not because i enjoy the game but because of the other options.

    DC Universe - SOE

SOE says it all, they have screwed over their players many times and will most likely do it in DC Universe too.

    *****************************

    Champions Online

Looks and sounds good but what real differences is there to City of Heroes?  How combat is performed!!  been there done that, Age of Conan. Same sort of content/plot/gameplay to CoH but combat is handled differently.

    ******************************

    City of Heroes

Good game, personally i think it's the only MMO to play these days and i have played many over the last 5-7 years. CoH/V has the Playability factor, everyone else is trying for new combat systems, superior graphics, this dimishes the actual gameplay elements with them concentrating on these things.

tbh what ive heard is that champions play style is very simular to Age of Conan, hack and slash melee style game.
