Sandbox or linear quest driven ?

And if your reading this Cryptic please include non-combat classes. Dont forget much of Trek life didnt revolve around killing things.

I want to run my own bar on a space station offering a sympathetic ear to passing traders. Please no mindless quest (coh) grinds.

linear.  even i can see that Star Trek would be hard to turn into Sandbox.  when i say hard i mean it requires some effort on the devs part and lets face it...they are all lazy as crap

    MMO wish list:

    -Changeable worlds
    -Solid non level based game
-Sharks with lasers attached to their heads

I'm hoping for a Sandbox/Skill based game but I'm not getting my hopes up for it. Theme Park class based quest grinders seem to be what sells right now so we may be in for another but who knows.......maybe Cryptic can break out of that mold and make it work.

Im hoping for sandbox style MMORPG but those are quite rare these days as it is much easier to design a good linear MMORPG than a good sandbox MMORPG.

But for me you cant have MMORPG and linear togehter. Linear games goes against what I believe a MMORPG is but seeing the success of linear MMORPGs such as WoW and LOTR, apparently that is not what most people seem to think these days.

Oh God, don't ask to turn this game into another SWG with useless classes and character-run shops.

SWG tried to bring silly classes like musicians and dancers because the developers ignored the essential concepts that made Star Wars so popular  (Epic battle against the Empire/Rebellion, not shopkeeping)

This is Star Trek.   The essential concept of Star Trek is 'Explore Strange New Worlds' .   If the TV show had been about 'Serve drinks and Sit Around', it wouldn't have been Star Trek, it would have been Cheers.

Even DS9 realized this and introduced the Defiant so the show could actually explore the Gamma Quadrant rather than sitting around on their rears.    Even Quark spent much of his time off the station in the show, not tending bar.

If you don't want to explore new worlds, meet alien races and help defend the Federation (or the Klingon Empire) then don't play Star Trek.   Play the 'Cheers' MMORPG when they come out with it.

When I played SWG I knew a lot of people who played those "silly classes" AND were also involved in Galactic Civil War as well. That was the beauty of the skill class system that they had. You could basicly dual-class you character. One for a combat role (swordsman, hand-to-hand, rifleman/pistol slinger) and another in a support role (dancer, musician, shop owner, medic). My chacarcter was a swordsman/doctor and could go out and kick butt then go to a city and heal those who were hurt. But here is the real kicker that blows your augument out of the water....many of those people with the "silly professions" actually ENJOYED them!! Go figure! But isn't what all these games, be they computer or PnP, are all about??

The same could go for STO. Not eveyone wants to be a member of Starleet or the Klingon Imperial Navy. Some people would actually enjoy being an independent scientist, merchants, policemen or a general gun/strong arm for hire type. If DS9 showed anything is that the whole Trek world isn't full of just Starfleet officers or Klingon officers but with a thousdand shades of grey. There are all kinds of people in the galaxy that can make it much more diverse and interesting galaxy. So sign me up for sandbox, skill based progression....silly classes and all!

Would be just awesome to play as a Bartender/Entertainer (like SWG entertainers) and medics etc. I can see very good things coming from this game if only the DEV team is willing to put at least some original (or even copy SWG if anything) stuff. WoW clone possibly? I hope to god not! Killing isn't satisfying anymore.

I want engineers that overall bring a huge boost to a ship giving the warp core overloads to escape ambushes etc, Medics that run from room to room healing people that are injured by exploding capacitors, plasma conduits, and what not. That is a true MMO, not everyone being kill kill kill repeat. ABSOLUTELY NO ORIGINALITY TO THAT or REPLAYABILITY.

this game should just give out skills and let people do what ever they want yes i want sandbox for this game. I think they will just make this game for the dumb masses like most mmo that are made today and we will never have a open play ground to have fun in ever again cause the masses are stupid and can't think for them self anymore and need to be spoon fed there entertainment ....

You seem to forget that people like to do other things then kill mindlessly all day.  But what would I know.  After all, "Cheers Online" is the MMO I should be playing.  (e.g. think outside of the box bud)

    I vote sandbox! (obviously)

I hope that STO will go both ways personally.

    How is this possible?

    Easy. Give players the choice.

You have the option of starting out and picking up a linear STO story where you follow the footsteps of some story given out by the game. You ascend to the top and finish the story with some new and awesome memories of it.

Or, you could simply choose to avoid the story entirely and make your own story. Sort of like The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion. You can follow the story and "complete" the game if you really wish. OR you can skip the story entirely and still play the game.

But, the game WILL need tons of skills and customization options. Linear or not. I seem to find that games with high levels of customizability do better than those without. Well- With the exception of Vanguard. =/

Couldnt agree more, action and exploration is the main components in Star Wars and Star Trek. Ofcourse there are other parts as well but sitting in bars I dont think is one of them (unless it is like the bar in the Star Wars IV where it turns into a fight :)

Btw, regarding linear or sandbox; Wasnt Star Trek that series where Kirk or Picard would sometimes just point in an arbitrary direction and say '"Take us there" (or something like that). If that isnt sandbox then I dont know what is.

I think maybe they could have both.

They could have missions and questlines for people who want it and rich RP open-ended content for those who just want to do their own thing in the game. My own personal opinion is there are far too many get quest, kill this, get reward MMORPG's out there at the moment. WOW, LOTRO, AOC etc...the list goes on.

I want something different from STO, Im bored of the same old WOW stuff.

Wouldnt object to being a barman or miner etc... but they have to get it right, lets just wait and see if they do.

I think it'd almost have to be sandbox. From what I've read (haven't played), LotRO is linear largely due to the fact that it's based on the books. Once the ring is destroyed, the story will be over. But with STO being set after Nemesis, the future hasn't been written yet. Okay, parts of it have, but they're largely subject to change. There isn't a defining point that the game has to reach/avoid.

The less you expect, the more you'll be surprised. Hopefully, pleasantly so.
