Hey, I'm having trouble finding a decent MMORPG that I would actually stick with, and enjoy it for more than a year. Does anyone know of an MMORPG that would fit these qualities?
1. Lots of classes/races
2. Good graphics
3. LOTS of stuff to do
4. Runs at a decent speed
Pretty much in that order...
The only MMORPG I have consistently played is EQOA, for PS2. That was fine, I just got sick of the XP, quest, repeat style of play. I considered switching to DAoC, but decided to ask on these boards first, because some people said it wasn't very fun anymore.

Buy a new computer, turn the graphics on high, have an open mind...
Pretty much any MMORPG if you do it in that order.
Again, I'm sick of people asking the same damn thing over and over...
Some people will say play SWG, others will say SB... some will say DAoC... again, I can not make your mind up, unless you want me to force feed you tons of crap into your head...
You're you, I'm me... that's what makes the world so different... if everyone wanted the same thing... people woulnd't look different, we all would eat the same foods, etc...
Again, do a little reading...
What will he do next?
Djin, did you notice that Levithian's post was nicer and more helpful, while yours did not help me one bit, yet it took up the whole page. Also, as I said I'm picky, EQ II sounds good, they were my second choice to try other than DAoC.
I only told you the truth. You're going from EQOA [PS2] to a MMORPG...
Get a good computer and your options are endless.
I could easily say, get WoW, EQ2, SWG or whatever... but I won't. Why? It's YOUR final word that counts!
Jump on the wagon, you already seem like you are... and you seem like a simple minded type of lad...
So I say play Lineage II if it's anything... you would enjoy it.
What will he do next?
How many classes are available to Lineage II? Sounds stupid, but games without lots of classes are my pet peeve. Otherwise, I'd just play Asheron's Call, like my friend does...
That was a horrible joke. Lineage II is trash. 4 races and everyone looks the same.
Star Wars Galaxies has 6 races and over 35 proffessions... it's all skill based which is nice... good graphics and runs fine for me.
I had max detail, playing on an european server from the states... it was fine... some people don't like it, some do.
AC is another joke.
What will he do next?
Do you know if DAoC is any good? That is something I checked on forums all over the net about. People said it started off fantastic, but just went downhill from there. By the way, after checking system specs for EQ II, it looks like I'd have to buy additional memory
But otherwise, it seems like a good idea. Also, you said something about AC being a "joke." I really don't know what to say about that, but I have played a few times, and watched my friend play. Seems to be pretty enjoyable.
Then I guess you just want something to do that runs okay.
I've played AC and it's very dated, very boreing, no races... just like AC2... joke.
DAoC, if you're not a certain class then the game isn't enjoyable. You can't really PvP [if you're into that] and it's another game with 2000 expansions...
I'm the wrong person to talk to... all though I've played tons of games, my mind is pretty closed to a lot of what's out right now...
What will he do next?
Sorry if I seem somewhat picky and inquisitive. I just canceled my EQOA subscription because I lost interest in the game. It gets old when you XP and XP and XP and it takes a year to get to 60 unless you are obsessed and/or have a lot of free time.
Well, I guess I'll keep reading and looking.
AC1 may be dated graphics wise (the next expansion pack will update the graphics to I think somewhere around DAoC's level) but I hardly consider any other aspects of the game dated. It's quite fun once you level up to the rest of the player base, enabling you to play the most recent content. Of course most new players get too hung up on the graphics and can't enjoy any other parts of the game.
AC1 has everything but a bunch of races, which is fine by me. I hate playing races other than humans. It makes me feel like a queer to play as an elf, maybe I'm just not comfortable with my elf side.
If you can wait a little bit, I'd go with World of Warcraft. As a mmorpg enthusiast, I have become pretty jaded with current mmorpgs and have some pet ones I am waiting on which are a bit further off in the future like Darkfall, Mourning and Trials of Ascension.
However, following input from friends who are in the WoW beta and EQII, who have also found all other mmorpgs tedious and non-replayable, and having been able to get a taste from them and the WoW stress test, World of Warcraft is my next goto mmorpg.
see my input on WoW in another thread below [Eq2 or Wow?? help me decide!] on this board.
EVE ONLINE!
In fact it doesnt have class's. You can be every class at once. Combat pilot. Trader. Scientist. Crafter. Missile speciliast. Gun specialist. Good guy. Bad guy. Neutral.
It is the best multiplayer experience out right now. That is if you like the whole space theme and flying spaceships, and big explosions and cool special affects.
I wouldnt go with DAoC. It has reached it's product life-cycle as far as I am concerned, and if you can wait just a little bit longer, some of the newer mmorpgs coming out will provide you with much better range and improvements of game-play depth.
Aside from that, I think DAoC is just another mind-numbing PvE platform "wanting" to be accepted as a PvP platform game but with little to actaully offer.
I have been with L2 (lineage 2) Since BETA. It has 5 races by the way. But I would not suggest it as a first MMORPG.
It is open PvP which means anyone who feels like it can kill you any time they want. This can be pretty disheartning when your just starting out.
The economy is very messed up, so it takes forever to get the gear you need to level, which brings me to my next point,
your going to have to grind through about 40 levels before your really in the spot light to get a clan, which is what you have to have to be in a castle siege, and of course the grind is just that the grind. It sucks.
The quests are uninspired, and take forever to do (speaking class change here) and non class chage quests not really worth the time. So even tho, the guy was joking when he said try L2, I just wanted to re-affirm, that it probly is not the game you want.
WoW, seems a bit cartoonish to me, however I like their death system. I am waiting for EQ2 and hope I get in the BETA for that. But honestly I think EVE right now is the best bang for the buck. I tried DaOC with a buddy, the chars are blocky and cartoonish, I don like the graphics, I dunno was just over all boring to me.
But in the end the choice is yours. Hope you have fun with whatever you decide.
If you want a new idea, go read an old book.
In order to be insulted, I must first value your opinion.
Well if you want to wait a bit , WOW (World of Warcraft) seems to have lots of content, seems to run, well has a stylized graphics set up that is not video speed intensive but still looks great.
Otherwise you should maybe look into DAOC. It has many of the requirments you seek, ecpecially with it's new graphics engine.
CoH might do you well also, however there is not "much to do" in CoH (In my opinion).
Thats all the advice I can give.
Personally I have gone back to EQ one. It is the only game that has the content and challenge level I need. Yes it is not for the casual gamer like SWG or CoH is, but that is not what I seek. The graphics are not top of the line but if I wanted great graphics I wouldnt really play MMORPG's. I'd stick to the FPS or adventure style games (like UT2K4). If you want content, lots to do, but dont mind lower end graphics EQ may be for you. Anyone who says there is not much to do in EQ either hasnt really played it beyond the first few levels, or has not played in in the last few years.

i'd also reccomend waiting for WoW, since everyone will pretty much be new players and it'll be easy to meet people or get into new guilds that form. You can also try FFXI, which can be played on the PS2, but it has forced grouping, otherwise a good mmorpg imo. You should really mention what you enjoy doing in mmorpg's(crafting? adventuring? socializing?), if you prefer 1st person perspective(EQ) or can handle 3rd person(UO is great if you can handle outdated graphics and 3rd person view), and maybe what you dislike about some games. DAOC is a possiblity too, take alot of those complaints with a grain of salt, alot of the complaints come from jaded veterans, same bad rap EQ gets by the same jaded players that played them for years then say theyre the worst games ever. Both have been very successful, which means more people prefer those games than many of the rest which all have their faults.
Thats part of the problem i have with how people criticize the games everyones looking forward to or have played as being 'bandwagon'. Sorry, most of the games that dont have a bandwagon waiting for it or a bandwagon praising it are crap to a majority, while a small minority tend to praise some small, lame game as the greatest. I still cant believe some people can praise Hz's, its like common sense it sucked if you played it
WoW is by far the easiest MMO to jump into with little to no learning curve, which can be a very important issue for someone with zero MMO experience. There are a handful of races and numerous activities to occupy the unescapable "grind" that seems to encompass all MMOs in some way or another.
Playing in the Stress Test of WoW, I would recommend the game to everyone. It runs very smooth and lag was a nonissue. I was overly impressed with the overall stability of the game and feel for the controls. As a newcomer to the MMO world I would not want you to experience many of the mistakes other MMOs have in their ability to be "user friendly" and server lag. Those components honestly can make the experience of the virtual world being created shatter.
Well there's my two cents on the matter, but like others have stated.... look at your options and see what fancies your playstyle.
