I got my chars on Teon, the server with the highest population count. Maybe other servers are still playable but Teon is seriously -_-ed up.
If you don't mind cheats, hacks, exploits, automated (including afk) pvp + pve, non stop message spam from adena sales companies and GMs that will do nothing no matter if the the cheating/exploiting is 100% obvious - go for it.
Just don't expect getting groups easy or finding a spot to level. And even if you find one, there's a good chance that some bot train takes it over soon and kill steals all your mobs. Cheaters know that they got nothing to fear and the game producer NcSoft removed all ways for players to do something against them.
While I still love the game I can't really play anymore on retail since the GM service is the worst ever and people are openly using godmode exploits and the like without fear of getting banned. Most freeshards got better support, so it's really sad to see how NcSoft handles this.

It's really never too late, especially once the new update comes in a few weeks, leveling will be a lot easier. I definitely suggest trying it out, you got for free anyways right? At first you may not see anyone at the starter towns but once you get to first class change and level 20 just go to Dion and you should be mixed in with others.
I picked up the box with 45days free.. is it still worth joining this late in the games life?
This is actually the perfect time to start. Well once Gracia goes live. It will increase the leveling speed of new players significantly.
Tips: Join a clans Academy, they benefit from it and so do you. This will help you get to know some of the higher level players in the game.
If you are European, join Luna as it's a relatively new server. If your in the Western Hemisphere join Phoenix as it has the highest player count of the NA servers and is a recently merger of Hindemith + Gustin.
Once Gracia goes live do all the quests the Newbie Guide tells you to. If you do, you can level 1-18 with killing 3-20 mobs in 30 minutes. You won't have to buy anything at all until level 20 where you should pick up top DG standard weapon and get your clan academy D armor. Your clan will give you the best advice after that.
Nah, L2 still has a long development plan in front of it. Its still one of the most played games worldwide.
Personally, with the coming changes you are just in time.
Although over the years they have softened up the game a bit to much. Whites (non-chaotic) without a PK count still need to have the chance to drop on death, sorry thats what gave the game edge, consequence of action and risk. Especially if they add in cheap "standard" gear. It was stupid for them to change it. All the other changes were fine and cool but that one.
Yeah, the new server might help. It won't give you a big advantage though. Using the right tricks/hacks you can make noblesse (2x level 75) in about 4 weeks. Ask our russian friends how it works. After that most ppl either hang in a bot train in the x4 mob areas or have smaller (mostly nuker) trains running on Blazing Swamp or/then Isle of Prayer until they hit 79 or 80. That takes a few extra weeks. Then they are ready for the endgame.
And please don't get me wrong, I am not telling you to cheat, I am telling you how the reality on those retail servers where it's impossible to get any GM support looks like. I still remember when Luna went life and there were 100s of bots with names like "ghewrgw" at all newbie spawns. It was so bad that NcSoft was forced to take some actions and seing NcSoft actually doing something was an mentionworthy event.

I am not looking to be hardcore in it, just somthing to play along side LOTRO that is not too deep, and have a bit of fun.
Its just a shame they dont do anything about adena farmers and bot's
If you don't mind all the cheats/hacks in L2, check it out in any case. I don't really want to sound too negative, since when I read for example SoverathI it sounds like there're still servers where ppl play and pvp themselves instead of using 3rd party software for everything. I really only talk about Teon and a little about what's going on on Luna since some ppl that got bored of Teon went there to bot up new toons.
As for botting in pve, I doubt NcSoft will ever start to ban botters for real since it's far too late for that. Teons user count would likely go from over 4k to below 250 if they did. And most of those would be afk shops in town. And no, not the ones that shout exactly the same text every 5 seconds even though they sold everything hours ago

I have no doubt that there are people who use things such as Walker. But I can't let that bother me as I just play the game.
As far as them banning people, they do. I know, hard to believe. However, I personally know people who were banned for botting. I didn't know they were botters until after the fact but there it is. I was dissapointed to hear it but not dissapointed that they were banned as it seems that NC does ban people. However, for everyone that is banned there is always a group that comes to forums screaming and crying that they did nothing wrong but were banned.
So either NC really is catching them and they are lying (possibility) or NC has to be doubly careful because they sometimes catch legit people and need to make sure that they don't ban legit people so they take their time to investigate.

There is no way for it not to affect you. Why do you think the inflation is so bad ingame? If you want to do a castle seige it affects you since a large portion of who you are fighting are botted up to higher levels. If you want to do olympiad it is affecting you.
So the only way it does not affect you is if you train solo in an empty area, dont buy anything, and dont compete in pvp....
Though you said "bother" and not affect I guess. So fighting against cheaters and having to pay more for goods since bot farmers drove up the price does not bother yah? You amaze me if that is true.

The only reason why I would care about bots in PVE is because large areas of Aden are completely taken by bot trains on some servers. Try to level in VoS, BS or IoP on Teon and you'll be happy if you find a spot. And you really can be sure that some -_- will login his full bot train not too much later and set it to kill steal all your mobs.
On Teon nobody cares about GMs and nobody is scared of getting banned. They even discuss their bot settings on shout chat. Not to mention heros selling accounts over hero chat.
As far as them banning people, they do. I know, hard to believe. However, I personally know people who were banned for botting. I didn't know they were botters until after the fact but there it is. Well I actually got 2 accounts banned, too. One on the L2 forums for complaining about the lack of actions on NcSofts side. And a pure shop account that never was on any 3rd party software and that was inactive for several months. Got that one unbanned when I asked NcSoft wtf that was about. Same thing happened to a level 79 Eva Saint friend. Got banned, asked what it was about, got unbanned immediatly.
So basically bans sometimes hit the wrong people.
And yeah, I also know some botters that got the stick. But just look at the low number of accounts banned and do the math: 100.000 in 4 years on about 10 servers -> 2500 per server per year -> 6 ppl per server per day. Now I know that on Teon at least 2 Spambots per day get banned which leaves roughly 4 bans per day for roughly 4000 bots, meaning you can bot for roughly 3 years NON STOP before a ban will hit you statistically.
So either NC really is catching them and they are lying (possibility) or NC has to be doubly careful because they sometimes catch legit people and need to make sure that they don't ban legit people so they take their time to investigate.
The problem is that ncsoft's actions take forever and seem totally random. I still see the trains that I reported in C4 running 24/7, while some players claimed they only botted once and got immediatly banned. In fact I know that some bans are totally random or mistakes on NcSofts side which leads to me serious questioning ncsoft bot detection methods. Asking ppl "what is 2+3=?" like they did in C2 was far more effective.
But that's not really the issue. If it was just PVE bots and everybody did it, I would adapt. But these ppl use specialized PVP tools that allow them to use exploits in PVP, that auto target people back that target them, that pvps for them while they are afk botting, that pvp auto assist, that give class sorted player lists for quick selection etc. Basically 1 person on Teon can make up a full pvp party.
And that's why I am so tired of the NcSoft staff. They let people openly use exploits that ruin the endgame completely if you like the pvp part. It's well known who the authors of those tools are since they play on Teon themselves and give out the license for the tool only to ally members. But NcSoft doesn't seem to give a -_-.
Which leads me back to my question: What server do you play on? I don't mind having a ping that increases by 100 if I get to play on a server where ppl actually play the game instead of using every possible exploit/cheat to win just to brag about it on the forums. Getting out of the euro servers also might get me rid of the annoying russians that don't speak a single word of english.

Making an elephant out of a mouse, aren't we just a bit?
I play on Teon and I do think there was a bit of an exxageration, sure there are bots, every server has bots, you wont find a single "legit" server, Teon is usually targeted because it has the highest population hence is bound to have more ppl botting.
As far as ruining the economy, well the economy is pretty much "Set" in L2, we wont see any major changes in the near future like C2-C5 when farmers inflated the prices massively, high end equipment and materials are acquired through clan efforts and require coordination and organization that farmers simply dont have. Ill go as far as saying that some high end equipment as it is, unless you are part of a good clan/alliance you wont see it for many months to come no matter how many billions of adena you farm/buy illegally.
Which leads me back to my question: What server do you play on? Well I can't guarantee that Phoenix is the most legit server of all the servers or if it can even come close. I do know that I can level. It has been harder of late because the merges have added more people. But I can level. Do I see bots? Sure, in certain areas I do. But quite frankly I either pk them when I can or level around them.
