Are FF XI Patching Servers only 56K?

I can't imagine FFXI's servers being only 56K but I'm going out of my mind here. I installed the game and PlayOnline yesterday. It took 3 hours to download the POL patch. Now I've been downloading the FFXI patch for 4 hours already and I have 2375/2700 files left to go! It will probably need to run overnight!

I have broadband - cable modem and am running Win XP home edition with an 256 ATI9800XT video card and SB Audigy sound. My computer is a Dell XPS gaming computer 3.2 speed with 1 gig ram! There is no reason for the download to be taking so long!

It makes me wonder whether this game is worth it.

Please advise me - is patching in this game always this brutal?

check your download to see what speed the transfer is at.If its over 120/sec then thats not bad ,and must be a major patch.A 56k server would only give you around 7kb/sec lol .Most patches dont take long at all ,however when they do a major update then ya its around an hour or so.Plus remember that the severs are in asia none in north america.

Never forget 3 mile Island and never trust a government official or company spokesman.

They throttle the bandwith to 30 K/sec max. They also send you each file individually, in uncompressed format. So you have to add several seconds for each file, as the update server has to 'find' the file for you.

It should take roughly between 4-5 hours to update a fresh install.

You can ignore what the previus poster said, they will never ever give you anything more then 30K/sec.

Well my patching was just as bad.

My ISP is comcast and I too run cable, but 7 hours haha. I think you'r either exaggerating...or lying straight out.

Playonline took up to 20 minutes for me. FFXI took 2 hours, but from what I've heard everyone gets that.

    I don't understand what's wrong wtih youts :-/

What reason would I have to lie, silly?

I suspect what's different about our download times is that you might be on the same continent as the server and I'm on the other side of the world?  A lot of people tell me that I'm having this problem because I'm connecting to Asia and the transfer speed is dumbed down to this part of the world.

I received this reply on another board:  "You are being "throttled back" - basically your download speed is capped to reduce stress on the servers.
Because of this, you can expect similar download speeds regardless of whether you have DSL, Cable, or Dial up. "

Regardless, I'll try again this morning - 1988 files left to go in excrutiatingly slow speed.  If it's not done by lunchtime I'll just return the game as unusable.  I have NEVER had a MMORPG take me more than an hour or two to patch.

Since writing that post a few hours ago, a timer now shows up.  As of this moment it says that I have 1613 more files to go which the software estimates will take 7 hrs 54 min more.

You're exactly right - I haven't even gotten into the game - it's brand new and I installed the disks and have to go through the patches for both POL and FFXI before getting into the worlds for the first time.

That is what I said before. But what is funny is that when you do a connection test with their playonline configuration utility, you will see download speeds of 1Mbit/sec, to their own servers.
I call that lying to their customers, as that utility does not get throttled, but your connection to their servers does get throttled.
We should all use that utility at the same time, and consume all their bandwith, just to prove a point.
Point being that they should throttle that utility also, it currently does not show correct readings.
