Levels

Ok, for a long long long long time I've pushed level-less games as the solution to a lot of problems. Level-less/class-less permanent death games. Well, I still think class-less and that skills should go up only when used, but I do think that the difference from the bottom of the level scale to the top should be staggering. Things that I don't want, raising skills that you've never even used. You don't get better at making armor by kiling kobolds, sorry, you just don't. Go play baseball for 3 years and then go win a soccer game. Skills that you don't use shouldn't go up, or should actually retrograde and decay over time. Another thing I don't like about todays games is the levels are obvious. People should grow gradually, not in giant leaps. So the levels should be more frequent. Instead of levels 1-50 maybe levels 1-100000 or something similar. With an average skill of 2500-5000 or so leaving a ton of room for mastry of the skill/craft. Wondering what everyone thinks. It's quite a different approach, because the stats don't change much over the game everything is skill dependent and beginning health/magic would be very much like ending health/magic. Comments?
