Questions about some upgrading

xagentxagent Member Posts: 66

I'm way over due for upgrading my power supply for my PC. (I had actualy bought a power supply before - but being limited on money at the time I bought one for about $20-$25 bucks on NewEgg; and needless to say it lasted maybe a month... lol)

My question is; whats the difference from "ATX12V / EPS12V" power supplies and "ATX12V " power supplies? I know there are a few other types listed at NewEgg.com but I noticed those two categories had the most units listed under them.

I'll be posting some more questions on here later.

BTW these are the connections I'll need (if this makes a difference):

 * 2 "SATA" connectors (my hard drive(s)

 * 2 "peripheral" connectors (cd/dvd roms)

 * 1 "PCI-e" connector (not currently needing one but would liek it for future use possibly)

 * and the 20+4 main connector and 12V(P4)/4 pin connector

If I need to post any other info; please let me know. I don't know a lot about power supplies other than the more the better; and not to buy any for around $20/$25... lol

    the ATX 12V/EPS 12v is really just compatibility.  Nearly all Motherboards are ATX 12v.  You can easily spend $250 on a good power supply, so if you are on a budget its good to list what you need it to do.  Personally, I recommend one that has 80+% effeciency, and 2 PCI-e 6+2 connectors.

    document.write(neg_specification_newline('1 x Main connector (20+4Pin)

    2 x 8Pin PCI-E'));
    1 x Main connector (20+4Pin)

    1 x 12V(4+4Pin)

    8 x SATA

    Thanks guys for the responses...

    These are the connectors I would need:

     * 2 "SATA" connectors (my hard drive(s)

     * 2 "peripheral" connectors (cd/dvd roms)

     * 1 "PCI-e" connector (not currently needing one but would liek it for future use possibly)

     * and the 20+4 main connector and 12V(P4)/4 pin connector

    I think I'll go for the "ATX12V" line; and will be going for the 501-600 Watt range - I think those would be powerfull enough. Not sure. I'll list hardware I currently have to see if I might need to stick towards the 600 watt range or maybe go higher...

     * Processor: Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 3.00GHz (2 CPUs) [hyper-threading technology]

     * Memory: 3326MB RAM

     * Video Card: EVGA NVIDIA GeForce 8400 GS; 512mb PCI-e 16x [I had a 8500 GT before; but sadly it got fried for some reason and the 8400 is  all I could afford at the time {not bad for $70 though}]

     * CD/DVD ROM and a CD/DVD Burner

     * 1 SATA hard drive

    Thanks for any further help.

    Also; I'm willing to pay $50 to $70; if I'm able to keep it within that range.

    Pretty hard to find a good PSU in that price range.  I couldn't really find any of my favorite PSU manufacturers.  Here is one that might do and comes with all the stuff to keep your system up to date atleast through the year.

    Rosewill 550w PSU $64.99

    Yea, it's hard to find a good psu that will last for a while in your range.

    I dunno if I can trust Rosewill, alot of their parts are cheaply made

    Thanks for your responses...

    I kinda have gotten nervous about buying the Rosewill ones after reading that they don't seem to last past 6 months - and a few people have had them fried their motherboards.

    So, I'm thinking of just going ahead and spending about $100 or so on one of these two Corsair PSU:

    CORSAIR CMPSU-550VX 550W ATX12V V2.2

    or

    CORSAIR CMPSU-650TX 650W ATX12V / EPS12V

    Which do you think would be worth it? Actually works out - after mail-in rebate that the 650 watt one is cheaper in the long run.

    I'm really leaning towards the 650 watt seeing as it is - overall - better in every way I think.
