It may not be news to some, but it's surprising to hear that:
Blizzard president Mike Morhaime told Computerandvideogames.com that when Age of Conan launched back in May, Blizzard did notice players leaving to try the game (though 40% have now returned).
Blizzard president Mike Morhaime said during an Activision Blizzard earnings call on Thursday, "Age of Conan released with some initial success a couple of months ago, and we did see some of our players leave to try the game. However, we've seen about 40 percent of those players return to World of Warcraft."

Well as expected with just any hyped MMO, players will leave, find out its not what they expected and generally go back to wherever they came from. Personally I have done the same, just simply due to that no MMO that has been released has the holding power that UO had for me.
I've done the same many times to with WoW and Lineage 2 but i think I found my new time killer with LOTRO. I think Aion and Warhammer are gonna forces to be reckoned with although I probably won't be trying them till much later after release.
I've done the same thing a number of times, and I'm coming full circle now I think. I dropped WoW for DDO and it didn't pan out so I went back, then I tried Vangaurd (but was smart enough NOT to drop WoW) and didn't even last a month there, but LOTRO got me to quit for over a year - LOTRO is still my all time favorite MMO by huge margin, but with all the talk of Lich King I'm probably going to give WoW another try... though I'm much more excited for Mines of Moria!
When scary things get scared, that's bad...
700,000 subscribers, that kinda sounds like the number of people that originally played EQ II when it launched, I bet most of the "Hardcore" EQ II players are a huge portion of that subscriber number. I'd be curious to see what the ratio of players from all the MMO's out there are, who left to play Conan. I bet the streets in the EQ II towns are even more empty now.
I haven't tried AoC and don't think I will, something about mixing pc games with console games that doesn't sit right with me.
glad to see blizzard give AOC some recognition, ive never seen any other company president/rep admit to something like this. Props to blizzard
Playing: EVE Online
Favorite MMOs: WoW, SWG Pre-cu, Lineage 2, UO, EQ, EVE online

I'm surprised as well to hear someone admit such. Though really, WoW has been pretty upfront about their numbers. It's nice to see, just to get an idea of what players are doing.
Cool. I know alot of people who left WoW to try AoC, they did play WoW again for raiding and arena, but thats all they use it for, they play Age of Conan as a second game. It's coming along very nicely, but I didn't expect it to be as popular as it is! Warhammer is definiately gonna be the game to challenge WoW over a long period of time.
It'll challenge WoW, but it will bludgeon AoC.
Righteous!

AoC is already flirting with around a 200k player base, and they only have about a month and a half before War hits. I think War will be the game of the year, AoC certainly does not deserve the title with the broken end game that exists now. Personally I will be surprised if AoC can retain more than 100k through fall.
Sorry, but neither WAR or AoC will come close to GotY. Fallout3 or GoW2 will be getting that.
Back to the topic:
AoC will lose almost all of its fan base by the time WotLK is released and when they finally get that Expansion out to fix the major problems no one will be there to play.
Warhammer will make a noticeable dent in WoW, particularly amongst the former DAoC players, and those favoring that style of PvP. It will not be a WoW killer, but it will take some players.
But Warhammer will absolutely crush AoC, and probably Vanguard as well. About the only non WoW game that is not threatened by it is probably LoTRO, mainly because it services a very diferent niche of gamers.
I'm sure it will ding LOTRO as well. Not a huge ding mind you but still take some. Most of the people playing LOTRO that enjoy pvp went to AoC and I'm sure some of thoes went back. PvMP is pretty entertaining for no more than it is. Thoes players will again leave for WAR and depending on how good WAR is they may not go back.
As to GW2 being GOTY? LOL thanks I got a really good laugh at that. Thats close to saying Darkfall is a real game. Fallout3 has a shot. WAR has a shot.
Personally, I don't see War making all that much of a dent in WoW. War will certainly appeal to the old DAoC players and maybe some newer players looking for a more PVP type system but I don't see the numbers for War getting anywhere NEAR the 10 million or whatever WoW is up to these days. While I am certainly not an "expert", I would expect War to have a healthy population of maybe 400k - 600k subs when the dust settles from launch.
If nothign else, the AoC launch proved that people are getting bored with their current MMO's and are dying for something new but I honestly don't see War being more than a niche game for RvR fans.

He said GoW2, not GW2. As in Gears of War 2.
Same for me with the Original Everquest. I tried other mmo's but id alway go back to EQ. Sad thing is i dont know what power it had over me but i was glued to Everquest.
I wouldn't be surprised seeing one of those two games win.

heuu . i dont think so , There is another Mmo coming and it will not flop , ready to bet 100$ on it .
I can't say much since I am bound by the NDA but I will certainly take that bet. In fact, I will make the bet easier for you, War won't have 1/4 of WoW's players (IE: 2.5 million). If you wann really bet $100, I'll pm ya my address so you can send my check.
i agree with that i really do not see WAR hitting over 2 million (and thats just to be safe)
I am hyped for WAR however it hooked me based on the RvR factor..although its PVE wont be bad and the ToK will keep me playing for a long time.
but also remember a little over half of WoWs player base is in Asia so i would expect to see them hit hard in Europe (where warhammer was created and has many people playing all of Games workshops other WAR related games) and take a beating in NA i know just about everyone of my friends i have gotten to quit WoW when WAR release
Aye....the 2.5 million was just to be extra safe, my honest predictions are posted a couple posts back. I foresee War having 400 - 600k subs after the dust from launch is settled. It will be a niche game much like DAoC....some like RvR and some don't.
I think it is going to be...
A. Very tough to pull people away from WoW once the xpak hits since that is where all their friends are and....
B. Only a small portion of the MMO playersbase is going to be big into RvR or DAoC would have done better than it did.
Like I said, I think it will have a healthy population and I am sure that many folks will just love the game but nowhere near the WoW mark.
I've left DAoC a few times to try the latest thing, hoping the "newer" game = better game. Every time, I was dissapointed and ended up back with DAoC. At this point I am about ready to NOT be an early bird anymore, just stick to good ole DAoC until something that IS good has been out a while.
When I said i had "time", i meant virtual time, i got no RL "time" for you.
Just goes to show that players from this game aren't exactly thrilled about the direction Blizzard is taking them. If WOTLK fails int he eyes of the players then I would suspect many other mmos will be gaining players.
