40% of those who left WoW for conan are back

http://www.shacknews.com/onearticle.x/53962

I wonder what percentage have left AOC for some other game (other than WoW).  My AOC acct is still active, but I've mostly begun playing other MMOs while I wait for WotLK. In another month, my AOC acct will go dead.

why did u create this thread? Did you create a account just for the sole purpose to copy straddens post about this already?

Yep i went back to WOW better game better Company by far...

Actually, I looked back through the last couple pages of posts to make sure that I wasn't posting something that wasn't there.  The post you are referring to must have fell off the first page already.

I found the article, and was going to post to the official AOC boards, but remember seeing someone here say that they were banned for putting any negative publicity on the internal AOC boards.  I figured it would be better to post it on a public board.    I've lurked here for a while, but never posted before, hence the new account.  Anything else you are dying to know?

Not everyone reads the front page news.

    Chill out.

Edit: here's the link and quote: www.shacknews.com/onearticle.x/53962

"Age of Conan released with some initial success," Morhaime noted. "We did see some of our players leave, [but] about 40% of those players have returned to World of Warcraft."

A good question would be, whre did the other 60% go after they quit AoC?

You should see all the new players on Vanguard and LotRO.

  • Die_ScreamDie_Scream Member Posts: 1,785

Actually, Turbine ought to send FC a note of thanks for all the new subs. I see a lot of people posting about going to LOTRO when they ask about a polished game to play.

I imagine the same could be said for VG, though, that's not so much polish as it is a large world fanatsy game to play.

Blizzard: Conan Stole Our WoW Players

You might say that it's an accomplishment in itself to pry a few World of Warcraft players away to try a different MMO.

So Funcom should be commended for apparently drawing some of those WoW players away to play Age of Conan: Hyborian Adventures, which launched in late May.

Blizzard president Mike Morhaime said during an Activision Blizzard earnings call on Thursday, "Age of Conan released with some initial success a couple of months ago, and we did see some of our players leave to try the game. However, we've seen about 40 percent of those players return to World of Warcraft."

In about a month's worth of time, Funcom's Age of Conan garnered 700,000 subscribers, according to the developer.

Morhaime said that players that leave WoW are often drawn back because of the content and service that Blizzard provides.

"Any massively multiplayer online game that launches today isn't just competing with the amount and breadth of content that we launched with back in 2004," Morhaime stated.

He said that other MMO companies entering the market are also competing with the service and content that Blizzard has been honing within World of Warcraft for nearly four years.

Morhaime expects that when the next WoW expansion Wrath of the Lich King launches later this year, more players will be compelled to return to WoW, which currently boasts 10.9 million subscribers.

Morhaime added, "Another competitive advantage is our ability to amortize our development costs across more than 10 million subscribers spread out over three continents."

He also described the userbase as a "sales force" of satisfied customers who spread the WoW gospel.

AoC launched at the perfect time.    WOW hasn't had an update in a few months.. they don't have anything new coming for the next 5 months.. Its basically the ideal time for a wow player to test a new game..

A ton tried AoC.. but I doubt many (if any) will continue to play AoC compared to WOW.  I mean.. yeah.. even if you are at a stagnent endgame in WOW for the next five months.. it's still a polished endgame supported by a great company.  Compare that to AoC where every dungeon at endgame is bugged beyond belief, all kinds of stuff is broken (stats anyone?).  Failcom has totally blown it's reputation.. does anyone but Avery think they will actually make the game fun?

I bet the 60% that didn't go back to WoW are probably now beta testing warhammer, or are trying LoTRO.

The big sign will be the explosion when Wraith launches in November.   I'm guessing they hit 13 million.

WoW sucks I play EQ2 and SWG again. All wow gives is more rep grinds, more dungeons and an expansion once in a blue moon and they make millions off of it . I am glad your having fun,but WoW sucks now man really.

Blizzard never said how many left to AoC.

It could have been 10,000 or 100, 000.

The CEO said, of the initial amount that left, only 40% came back to WoW.

    Speculating anything else is pointless.

    The other 60% preordered WAR.

I left and tried AoC for 2 months. loved it at first, then after 2 months of AoC i had a 72 Demo and 80 POM and a 30 assassin. and i hated it.

might play wow for a few months until something else comes along. my toons are at the point where i have to go to 25 man raids in wow.. and i dont really care for any raids above 15 players.

I am so desperate for anything other than WoW right now.

After years of play, it doesn't matter how addictive an MMO is.  It gets extremely stale.  It is very frustrating to really want a different game, but there are few high-quality games out there.

When WAR releases, I'm gonna be on that so fast...  It's a viable, high-quality alternative to WoW, and unlike AoC, it looks like it will satisfy all my old Warcraft itches.

  • Warhammer is around the corner. I don't know if it will suceed or not. But there might be another chunk that will leave. Bioware KOTOR is coming out too? Another chunk? Blizzard is Goliath yes but there are lots of David's out there...

Unlike AoC, WOW is not trying to shift their rating down a notch.

Unlike AoC, I can give feedback about WOW on the forums.

After AoC launch for like 2 weeks Iron Forge was a gohst town.  Now you'd never know anyone left.

You guys do know Blizzard can say everything they want right?, how do they know how many players left for AoC and not for some other MMO? My guess is they looked at the largest drop in players but does that guarantee that they left for AoC? I think not. How the hell do they know that 40% of those guys came back to them? That's a fair question and if you have a correct answer please repley me but I have no idea.

And yes i play both WoW and AoC and i'm not a fanboy of even one of these games.

Perhaps 40% of the people who returned marked "leaving for another MMO" on their exit surveys from WoW?

It could be that people cancelled at the same time as AoC went live, suggesting what the reason was. Or it could be they gave one of those surveys when you quit 'why are you quitting?' and the people said AoC. Or it could be the people who didn't say anything but cancelled when AoC came out and resubbed a few weeks later. Probably not an exact science but it would give them a good estimate.

As for your last line, I'm not sure its physically possible to still play AoC and not be a fanboy. Everyone who wasn't a fanboy has already cancelled.

Waiting for: A skill-based MMO with Freedom and Consequence.
    Woe to thee, the pierce-ed.

To the bottomless pit of MMo players nightmares. Waiting on WAR I would guess. Possibly SGW?

Figure a majority of people play free stuff until their new game comes out. At least thats what I do.  Free shards ftw.

May try SWG, or go back to D&D Online, or WoW. I'm saving Vanguard as a freshgame if  Warhammar sucks.

Even if Vanguard has a good population now, it will go dead for a bit with Warhammers grand opening, so it's sitting on the back burner as a fail safe.
