I remember in EQ1, how the West Karanas was spooky, and I'd run my character from tower to tower, hoping not to get ambushed by a mob. At night, I'd often just camp my character in the tower and wait for dawn, because the high-level werewolf would be out.
That was scary and fun. So, how does Warhammer's PVE environments stack up? Are folks respectful of the PVE threats and challenges, or are they kind of lame, with PVP being the only thing that keeps folks on their toes?

That was only scary and fun because ti was probably your first mmo (I had a similar experience in daoc ) nowdays, if it was something like that you'd likely call it stupid and badly designed. Night time where you can't see jack + high lvl mobs with large agro radius = not something people want in their game.
Anyway, war's pve is there for people to have fun (sitting in a tower waiting for the night to be over so you can do something is not as fun as it sounds =p)
I had the same feelings for asheron's call. The run to the dungeon was almost always scarier than the actual dungeon. Then a place I leveled in for quite a time would randomly be swarmed with hundreds of creatures significantly stronger than what was there before.
I remember doing certain dungeons and sweating and being shakey and stuff I was so worked up over the game. I'm not sure another MMO has the capacity to bring that out, I mean I'm much older now, and I lost my mmo cherry a long time ago.
I know for me the journey typically meant more than the accomplishment. When I went to get my lightning elemental stone I remember every detail of the run from the nearest portal in all the way to the end of the dungeon. I remember who died and didn't, etc. etc.. I don't remember doing a damn thing with that stone after i got it =(.
Well, gl and happy hunting to you and hopefully war can bring this back.
"Night time where you can't see jack + high lvl mobs with large agro radius = not something people want in their game."
Speak for yourself. That was part of the challenge back then. Take away the challenge and you get ...well not as rewarding a time I think. When there is no risk there is no reward and that doesn't make for a very fun game.
I always enjoyed the fact that night time in the original EQ was actually DARK. I played a barbarian and the barbarians had terrible night vision, not as bad as the Erudite race, but bad enough I needed to get a moonstone, or whatever they were called just to see. It added a great deal of immersion to the game that is lacking from the majority of games today.
What I wouldn't give to actually feel as if it IS nighttime when I am traveling through Azeroth... Vanguard is really nice in that it does get dark and I find myself using my torch a fair amount.
That Guild Wars 2 login screen knocked up my wife. Must be the second coming!
DAoC had real darkness too.
If you went deep in the forest it got dark (even during day).. and at night it was hard to see unless you switched on your torch.
Now this was fine in the homelands.. but on the frontiers it would make you stick out..
I do hope WAR has intense darkness, but I really doubt it.
Darkness sounds kick ass
Oh man, the good ol' days of EQ. I remember how the run from Qeynos to Freeport took over an hour, and we learned why you don't cross Kithicor at night. I miss those early days.
I really doubt another game comes out that makes us feel that way. I dunno why. I would play classic EQ in a flash, and I mean that.
Why does it seem like after a while all MMO's get expansioned/patched to the point where the original game isn't there anymore?
Sent me an email if you want me to mail you some pizza rolls.
My first online game (a MUD back in the early 90's) was scary, simply because it was my first really immersive online experience.
Nothing has matched it since, despite playing some games with great graphics. It's just like the first time you fall in love - nothing else after quite compares to that warm fuzzy feeling it gave you.
I have no doubt WAR's PvE will excel just like it's RvR, but it isn't a World, it is a Game (the dev's statements not mine). As such don't expect too much or you might end up being disappointed.
It would need a scary ambient soundtrack for that. I remember DAoC´s Catacombs - In the dungeons you'll hear spooky sounds and yeah, I would have to agree with WoW´s Duskwood. The music, the lighting, the atmosphere.... very well done for that zone. The most spooky mmo must be Dungeon & Dragons Online, then closed follow up by Dark Age of Camelot. I think that Brad Derrick really can make a unquie soundtrack for Warhammer Online. Btw, does anyone know if there is CD with Warhammer Online sountrack in the CE version?.
This is what I hate most about MMORPGs. They get expanded upon and changed untill they are garbage. I have never ever seen one MMORPG become a better game after time. NEVER.
That should tell companies something. I don't understand why they take a winning formula and then change it down the line. People are playing the game for a reason. In Everquest's time it had the the largest N. America population for a game. It was comparable to what WoW has now considering MMORPGs were less known and not as many people had internet access. What do they do? Make major changes in the games design. WoW comes along and has a huge success (I am not a personal fan, but I will admit this). What do they do? They make major design changes to there game and now it isn't what it was. I hear a lot of people say how the expansion is not good. They go to far from what made the game a success.
What bothers me in MMORPGs is you can never go back and play your favorite one. They are not there anymore, they have been changed into something else. If I want I can go back and play my Baldur's Gate PC game once again ..and I have and love it. If I could sign up to EQ classic now I would drop all the new games in a heartbeat and play it for years to come. Do I care I progress slowly? No. Why should I be in a hurry? Do I care it takes time to travel? No. Again why should I be in a hurry? I love the game.
What causes a MMORPG to supposedly get "dumbed down" over time is because the developers want to make their games more casual friendly, open to a more broad audience. They figure that for the every masochistic player (that enjoy corpse runs and hard-to-get loot) that leaves, 10 more casual players will flock to subscribe. WoW has proven this to an extent, with how you don't have to do raids anymore to get the best gear. Still, I think Warhammer is probably going to be much less of a gear gathering headache that WoW has become.
Once you go go whack, you'll never go back.
What is this "whack", you say? Check out the links!

meridian 59 was the darkest ive ever seen an mmo get
i remember there was this dungeon/cave with orcs in it that we killed for orcs teeth, only you had to ditch your offhand to hold a torch.
if the torch burned out and you didnt have another it was pitch black
how many times i ran out of torches in the dark getting ganked by orcs...
i think we left our loot on our corpses as well...scary lol ah those were the days
Well we're starting to go WAY off topic and NDA doesn't allow anyone to say anything.
Purpose in life is not to gain things, but experience. - Rover64dd
its all nostalgia. you will never feel that way again.
kind of off topic a bit but i remember when after i would go to bed after a long RvR session i would hear the track that statred playing when you entered Cotswold and i do not think i will ever forget that msuci DAoC had one of the best soundtracks for an MMO EVER..although i enjoyed GWs but i had it off most of the time playing itunes over it for PVP
The developers and little birdies have said that the game has pve content, just like WoW, everquest 2, yadda yadda, but the game is RvR focused. If you have played WoW you know that you can pvp or pve, but when the game was first released the focus for a long time was on pve, specifically end game raiding. I guess WAR is supposed to be the opposite of this. The final "endgame" raid is the city siege where you kill the opposing faction's leader and ransack the town. I have also heard that EA mythic design the pve content around the classes and not vice versa like WoW and everquest 2 did. I could be completely wrong since im not in beta, but i guess if i was in beta i wouldn't be saying anything
I can not honestly say there was ever a time, while playing an mmorpg, that I felt spooked out or anything like that. The AI routines in all MMO's is pretty generic and with hundreds of other people running around it's hard to feel immersed to the point where something goes bump and you go AHHHHH! lol. Hell, the only video game that ever freaked me out was FEAR. That was a great game

As of right now no. However you bring up a good point I dont think anyone else has thought of when ideas where floating around for the unannounced CE item. I would LOVE the soundtrack AND an artbook. One thing I was upset at myself for (at first) was missing the LOTRO soundtrack that came with the CE. Lucky for me it didnt take long to get it anyway. The music they used in LOTRO fit the game perfectly and is pretty nice easy listning (if you like that kinda music).
Even more oftopic I remember my first olthoi encounter in AC, that chirping haunted my dreams but as others have said, it was always with our first love and we will never feel that again. Even if developers try to do it agian it wont work, at least for old school MMO vets. We have learned to adapt to well.

I've told this story before, but I'll tell it again. I was playing EQ about 7 years ago, maybe 8 years ago, and this other player and I were camping the slope of a hill in Karanas. It was nighttime in the game, so I decided to tell him about the Karanas werewolf (an undercon that spawned at night and ran around the zone creating havoc).
I was telling him about the werewolf, when he said, "Shut up, Dude, you're freaking me out." Just then, at an incredible chance likelihood, the werewolf happened upon both of us. I know I jumped.
The days of nailbiting combat and getting pissed from death are over. WAR is no different in this respect. Though like EQ level is king in WAR.
my first MMO whas a MUD totally out of whack.. I remenber killing rabids rabits, and snuffles and girl toys, and tryiing to eat dead bodies, and using /rekall too much, and getting lost in a 3x5 tiles main city.
I always fel the scarriest in Cursed Forest in Camelot, that place was jstu spooky.
Yes it was. And let's hope WAR has plenty of similar PVE experiences, lest it becomes a PVP zerg-fest as ADD types spam the keyboards while their bottle of Ritalin pills lay ignored and scattered on the carpet.

No offense to evil13, but most gamers are like him today because of WoW and it's popularity. And as long as they are the majority and we the minority we probably won't see these games again.
In other words, you can blame all shitty MMO's today on WoW. Thanks WoW. Thankyou.
Edit: And take my word for it, WAR is nothing like those old day MMO's and will not give you those "special" moments.
