What's your favorite thing to do in a game?

BleurenBleuren Member UncommonPosts: 29

I'm just seeing what people like most in an MMORPG, to see what the common ground is in most people nowadays. I think the answer might be a little interesting.

I made the poll this way so you'd actually have to read it, gives a little bit of an example rather than "Quester' 'pvper' 'hacker..' Whatever.

Explore The World - You play the game just to look at the beuty of the code, you explorer and explore, you're all into the graphics, you can care less of anything else rather than awwing over the beutiful scenery.

Be the Best! - You play the game to well, be the best! You play to get the top high-scores, and out beat everyone, and sometimes brag about your accomplishments, you get a rush out of being in the top!

Slay like there is no tomorrow - You like the type of games that are pure GRINDING! You're a Grinder, you fight and fight, just to get that level and the levels rewards, you're a true Hardcore gamer.

Be heard in the world - You're a quester, or a task taker! You love the storylines, and love taking on the tasks, sometimes with a challenge! It keeps you from being bored in a game, it's your thing to do!

Become a pal - You're honestly looking for a friend (even a boyfriend girlfriend.) and not trying to take them for what they've accomplished in a game, you're just there to pass time and enjoy the company!

Jack-of-all Trades - You're that kind of person that likes to do a bit of everything, you'll go here and farm, and then take a break and go knock down a tree for its wood and fletch the wood, you're a jack of all trades.

Deathbringer - You stalk the land with a message, the message is death. You are a PVPer, you fight players, and enjoy the challenge and then awwing on your victory. Nothing pleases you more than to knock down your player-opponent.

Sampler- You like to try all sorts of MMORPG's, you are just looking for that right taste in game, until that happens, you're over here, and over there, playing all sorts of mmorpg's. Everything fasinates you, you're a sampler.

Not Specified? - Just post what it is you like to do!

Thank you for taking the time to participate in this, again, this was to narrow it down to give a more specific example of what you like to do in an MMORPG. Also, it gives a little bit of a reading exersise, for those who like the little story that goes with it!

Regards,

Bleuren

Grouping up for anything is what I enjoy

I don't care if its for a quest, to grind, heck to craft, I love grouping.

I also love tanking if that counts, in all mmo's my main and usually only character is a tank.

Best part of one RPG for me is the freedom - to do whatever you want. That why I answered Jack-of-all trades.

Where themepark games try to hide that they are copying WOW, games like Mortal Online and Darkfall make no attempt to hide their inspiration

Considering I dislike 75% of the mmo's i try, I have to say im a sampler.....

I always seem to like features of a mmo, but just cant bring myself to actually like the game.

I guess until the combat gets better im stuck sampling.....(the games i do like dont seem to have enough features)

    Own, Mine, Defend, Attack, 24/7

    1. Roleplaying. I like to speak and act as my character 90% of the time (70% in reality, since I and others are not always up to RP, and I enjoy Out-Of-Character chat if it's clearly delineated from In-Character chat). Even while soloing I think about who my character is - their personality, background, beliefs - and develop that. This, for me, is a creative outlet and an imagination exercise. It also helps me to overcome the effects of my Asperger's autism, improving my understanding of social interaction without putting my self on the line. That said, I do also benefit from OOC socialising, and have met some very good and interesting people due to that other 10-30% of the time.

    2. Exploration, but not quite as the "Explore The World" option describes. I appreciate beautiful graphics but I still value gameplay mechanics, community quality, and the availability of RP far above it. Also, a game can have astounding graphics and yet be a bore to explore; it's important to have a profusion of unique nooks and crannies, not just expanses of empty auto-generated land.

I explore quite lazily, experiencing the world slowly as if savouring a fine wine. I prefer the feeling of knowing there are still places I haven't seen after 2+ years of playing a given game, rather than that of having "been there done that."

Ryzom is a wonderland for me. Its terrain is all hand-sculpted (though some pieces of terrain are reused, that doesn't make much difference to the impression that love was poured into the creation of interesting locales for Ryzom's players to discover). There are many details large and small, from magnificent waterfalls and hidden ponds with serenading frogs to ornate carvings on desert roads partially buried in the sand and meaningful pictograms on the buildings of one of the civilisations. Throughout, there is the sense of a living planet: insects flitting through the air, spores rising from the ground in the evening at a particular hill where giant fungi grow, leaves/sand kicked up by a breeze in the forest/desert, an underground ecosystem resembling the deep ocean with glowing flora and pale fauna, the first snowfall of a winter... NPC patrols wear colours unique to their tribe... Carnivores hunt herbivores with different reactions depending on their species... The type and quality of crafting materials found in a place depends on the season, weather, and time of day...

I'm an info whore.  I like to learn EVERYTHING about my MMO, all the stats on all the items, how each class works, damage calculations, drops, everything.  sadly I can only do it with my current MMO, I knew everything about L2 till I quit, but the game keeps growing while I play other MMOs and I can't learn everything when I'm not playing it.

I want to be a fountain of knowledge, and I do a decent job.  I listen to everyone else and try out everything I can.

Everything creates huge amounts of negativity on the internet, that's what the internet is for: Negativity, porn and lolcats.

I'll look at the Ryzom, so far the games with the best graphics in my opinion (That I've played) would be Perfect World, Lord of the rings online, and runescape(just kidding) It would be Hero Online in my opinion.

exploration has always been a big hook for me in MMO's

Im very critical of a Dev team that leaves there game world static never revisiting zones to advance storylines or add little easter eggs/goodies.

    PLaying: EvE, Ryzom

    Waiting For: Earthrise, Perpetuum

Reviving the topic. So... nobody really likes those 1000 Korean games with a different look? :D

I'd say I'm a Jack-of-all-trades. Even though I tend to lean more towards the social side. Frankly, if I don't have people to socialize with and play a MMO with regularly, I usually lose interest in the game fast.

    I'm a deathbringer I would say...

I really enjoy world pvp. Large battles, small battles, it doesn't matter. The thrill of the hunt, having absolutely no idea what you are going to find around the corner, if you will be out numbered, or out skilled. The best part about world pvp is grouping with your friends to do it.

Tried: LotR, CoH, AoC, WAR, Jumpgate Classic
    Played: SWG, Guild Wars, WoW
    Playing: Eve Online, Counter-strike
    Loved: Star Wars Galaxies
Waiting for: Earthrise, Guild Wars 2, anything sandbox.

Well I do care about allot more then just exploring but it is a big plus to have this in a MMORPG
Be the Best! - You play the game to well, be the best! You play to get the top high-scores, and out beat everyone, and sometimes brag about your accomplishments, you get a rush out of being in the top!
Not playing MMORPG for that, for that I play regular online games, don't want to bring my online shooter playstyle into MMORPG, unfortunaly many do which in turns turns this genre around ...
Slay like there is no tomorrow - You like the type of games that are pure GRINDING! You're a Grinder, you fight and fight, just to get that level and the levels rewards, you're a true Hardcore gamer.
Sorry not seeing anything hardcore here other then a playstyle that is ruining this genre of games in my opinion.
Be heard in the world - You're a quester, or a task taker! You love the storylines, and love taking on the tasks, sometimes with a challenge! It keeps you from being bored in a game, it's your thing to do!
Together with exploring these are must haves in a MMORPG
Become a pal - You're honestly looking for a friend (even a boyfriend girlfriend.) and not trying to take them for what they've accomplished in a game, you're just there to pass time and enjoy the company!
Never look for a fried but just meet people who might end up becoming a friend.
Jack-of-all Trades - You're that kind of person that likes to do a bit of everything, you'll go here and farm, and then take a break and go knock down a tree for its wood and fletch the wood, you're a jack of all trades.
Also a must for me with MMORPG, I simply dislike one type of playstyle, like i said we have tons of online shooters that catter to that.
Deathbringer - You stalk the land with a message, the message is death. You are a PVPer, you fight players, and enjoy the challenge and then awwing on your victory. Nothing pleases you more than to knock down your player-opponent.
PVP died for me when internet became mainstream sorry.
Sampler- You like to try all sorts of MMORPG's, you are just looking for that right taste in game, until that happens, you're over here, and over there, playing all sorts of mmorpg's. Everything fasinates you, you're a sampler.
Common sence, every gamer will look for that game he or she will enjoy, can make someone a gamehopper but just understand it's a person who seeks a nice game to play.
Not Specified? - Just post what it is you like to do!

Figuring out ways to piss off and scam other players by uncovering faulty design and loopholes in the mechanics of the game, but not cheating by using 3rd party programs mind you, simply being smart and utilizing what the game designers may have missed.

  • PiekokasPiekokas Member UncommonPosts: 6

    Mostly Crafter.

But in a game with a complex crafting system and where items are player made, not "phat lewt"

    Ryzom and SWG had that...

  • matthewf978matthewf978 Member Posts: 287

I had to think about the decision between explorer and pal. I like playing a game and grouping up to overcome tasks which aren't completable by a single person. However, in most of my gaming experiences the group help is one sided(caters to one person but not the other). When I find people who are willing to help me and I am capable of helping them then I have found an adventuring partner. I won't accept handouts that I can't pay back or assist with some quest. If I didn't want to interact with other people I would play a standalone game.

It seems like all of these are more fantasy than SciFi :D ... Nobody is into the Real Life games hehe. Fantasy pretty much is what can be done with all of these topics, other games can limit it or expand into one single area, but there's always a game out there for someone :)

Wow lots more explorers then I thought.  I am also one who likes to explore but have found most rescent games don't allow this aspect or have nothing worth exploring for.  The only one that comes to mind is Guild Wars that had some nice areas to explore, and out of the mission instances you can go into your own personal instance of the world and discover those little waterfalls in the middle of no where.  Or get a party and stomp the level 30 dragon boss on these explorable maps with a party even though you can only get to level 20.
