BANGKOK (Reuters) - A Thai video game distributor halted sales of "Grand Theft Auto" on Monday after a teenager confessed to robbing and murdering a taxi driver while trying to recreate a scene from the controversial game.

"He said he wanted to find out if it was as easy in real life to rob a taxi as it was in the game," chief police investigator Veeravit Pipattanasak told Reuters.

I knew it was only a matter of time before this was going to happen. This is the second time GTA is directly linked to killings. One in the US, now one in Asia.

BTW, I'm not one of those who dispise violence in games and am on a crusade, no I just think some games that glorify violence (GTA4) have stepped over the line.

The gun made me do it. The game made me do it. The Devil made me do it.

Blah blah blah. No, buddy, you did it yourself.

Ever stopped to think that perhaps the teenager is just using GTA4 as scapegoat for what he did, to somehow get himself off the hook a bit.

The game did not make him murder that taxi driver, the thought of murder was already there, dwelling on his deluded mind. He simply modelled his murder on GTA4, he could have just as easily modelled his murder on anything else, such as a movie, book, whatever. It was simply a matter of time.

Just another nutjob, and judging by the country he's from he'll pretty soon be a dead one.

You know, I saw a cab the other day and hailed it, paid for my fair and said thank you.

    I learned that from GTA4.

You can either kill and murder that cabby or pay the fair. Right vs. wrong. The kid chose unwisely.

    How do you know this?

It's been established that in houses where there are weapons present the number of suicides is much much higher.

Give a person the means to kill and chances they do are much higher than when they need to go through the trouble of finding a means.

I just read an article about this that said that people who don't have guns have time to come to their senses and calm down.

The means are a problem too. You can not convince me if a person reinacts a killing from a game that that game is not to blame. I agree with you that this child has problems. But to outright tell me that if it wasn't for this game that you're certain he would have done it anyway, that I don't believe.

This game might very well have been the drop that made the bucket overflow before he came to his senses or got help. And that makes the game partly responsible for what happened.

Well hmm its called being a freaking parent. If GTA was causing so many people to kill it would be alot more then 2 people saying it. it'd be more in the hundreds. If someone goes out and kills someone today and blame it on subliminal suggestions in sesame street then people will be saying OH GOD SESAME STREET proclaims violence in kids. Its stupid. Nothing is to blame but the person. Either u know right from wrong or you dont PERIOD.

I seem to remember The Sun (the English version) blaming Final Fantasy VII for the murder of a kid a few years ago. They called it something like: 'a relentlessly violent and bloody game'.

It's just scaremongering. Anybody who has played FFVII will know there's only one instance of blood in the entire game (at the end where Cloud finishes Sephiroth off).

Games, Music and movies will always get the blame because parents refuse to believe that their children could be so hateful and murderous. Similarly, adults who kill their friends because they wanted t recreate an event in the media have to be nuts in the first place. Ordinary people don't rob and kill a taxi driver just because they've seen it in a video game.

That's ridiculous. That's like saying Anthrax should be readily available for everyone from a grocery store because only 2 or 3 people have used it to kill civilians with it so far.

And if people killed with Anthrax, Anthrax is not to blame but the people using it....

I hope you see why you can't use that as an argument and why it's an utter irresponsible one.

Doesn't that indicate that there are problems for psychological unstable people?

There is usually no way to tell if the child has problems. The article said it was a perfectly normal acting person.

Why shouldn't we prevent this from happening in the first place by banning this game?

what is the chance that if the game was banned, that the person would have done something as equally violent? maybe after fantasizing about gods wrath in the bible? ban that too?

    That's something you can't know.

But banning this game on the basis of promoting violent behavior, would at least be worth the added benefit of possibly preventing further killings.

We're talking about something that will not hurt the economy, will not hurt religion, but would promote decent behavior for teenagers and would send out a signal to developers to think about the possible consequences their games might have on people.

you seem to think that this game is absolutely responsible for these killings? how can you know?

what about the opportunity of discussion that parents have with their teenage children? what if there are a number of teenagers who were able to see that their parents cared about what they viewed, and respected them enough to discuss it, but not ban it? so those teens gained in self respect and as a response didn't feel a need strike out violently?

by banning the game are you not hurting those that may benefit from it?

that is by far the most dumbest response i have ever gotten. Comparing GTA to Biological warfare. Did the anthrax killer blame GTA or somthing? And when did antranx become a entertainment medium? Oh hey guys lets go play with that anthrax its HOT!!!

Grand theft auto should come with a helmet anda  short bus coupon for special kids like this. It should be a massave package for the retard who does stupid shit like this, and the retards who agree to penalize the game company.

Lets punish Rockstar because our kid is generally too stupid to realize robbing and killing a taxi driver is fucking wrong. for fuck's sake.

I think games like GTA4 havent even come close to the line yet, leave my video games alone, i find violence entertaining. I watch violent movies and play violent games and i know enough to differentiate between entertainment and real life.

OP may say he isnt against violence in video games but if you believe their is a line, then clearly you arent that far from it.

People need to stop holding the game creators accountable for for their retarded children and their mental instabilities.

Better start walking around in life with a blind fold on, because if banning games will prevent further crimes, then closing your eyes will change the fact that the world is a violent place.

If people are seriously thinking of banning games like Grand theft auto, then they should start with the games that are just about brutally killing people for no purpose, such as Manunt or Manhunt 2.  Mind you, I find these games quite enjoyable, but banning GTA because some kid wasnt sane enough to tell the difference between a game and reality is not the developers fault.

You dont see people saying that they were trying to recreate a scene from manhunt 2, I think that the parents should stop being stupid and not buy your kid an M rated game if you do not think he can handle the violence that comes with one.

I'm left thinking that Waterlily believes that guns kill people, and that people are not to be trusted with anything that might potentially lead to homocidal violence.

Oh, and for the record, if Anthrax could be safely kept, then I wouldn't have a problem with it being accessable. The problem with Anthrax is that it *cannot* be safely kept but must be stored in a highly controlled environment.

And yes, this means I think anyone should be able to purchase anything they want, so long as they are not criminals and the items(s) can be handled safely.

Oooo.... freedom. Scary! Can't have that! We need more laws!

A society that lets their kids and young play a game like GTA is a very sick society.

What about draino? Knives? Do you see my point? ...attempted suicides?

Or die if they are a woman being attacked by a man, just as one particular situation.

Assuming that he is telling the truth, which I don't, than he would have done so anyway. There is violence and depictions of violence in our everyday lives, not all of it is necessarily bad either.

It could have been anything. Could have seen the latest Harry Potter movie trailer and stabbed someone in the eye with a 'wand'.

You should have left your opinion as it was in the first post, as I agree that games like GTA and Bully, especially Bully which is supposed to be a violent rip off of Harry Potter, go way to far.
