My Custom XP computer's going out already. Nothing works on it, and this is what I fricken can use:

Dofus

Internet

Warcraft 2

WMP

A few other things that really don't matter

This is what my comp has:

A really good graphics card

DirectX

Direct3D

DirectDraw

All that jazz.

Yet I can't play any good MMORPGs on the dang thing. It has everything a good game needs and more. Yet NOTHING WORKS.

Explanation?

(BTW, is it because my comp keeps screaming at me about not having Genuine Windows? We got the comp used and the windows seemed genuine for a long time!!!)

uhh...we need system specs dude.  cant really tell you anything without telling us whats inside your machine.

also if its an XP computer and you got it 2nd hand then i would assume either

    1. the old owners did not know how to take care of a computer (happens a lot)

    2. one or more of the parts inside are past their use by date

so either find that part and upgrade or scrap the whole thing and get a new rig.  until you tell us whats inside we cant really say whats the better option.

p.s the reason why i said upgrade is fixing/replacing the part (if its from the original computer) would not be worth it.

    MMO wish list:

    -Changeable worlds
    -Solid non level based game
-Sharks with lasers attached to their heads

Posting your actual computer specs would probably help a lot better. Since your on XP, easiest way will prob be to go to: Start > Run ... type in dxdiag

You'll see a screen that says "DirectX Diagnostic Tool". Post these specs...

    Processor:

    Memory:

    DirectX Version:

Then click on the "Display" tab and post the information that you see there.

Soz I didn't exactaly know to put that.

    Processor: AMD Athlon(tm) 64 Processor 3000+, MMX, 3DNow, ~1.2GHz

    Memory: 512MB RAM

    DirectX Version: DirectX 9.0c (4.09.0000.0904)

    Display: NVIDIA GeForce2 MX/MX 400

BTW, I know the graphics card is good because Spore doesn't work on the other comp. Well, it doesn't exactaly work on this one either but all this one is asking for is the lastest version of DirectX, which, as you can see, I do have.

Oh, and Death, I can't replace anything inside my comp. My family is running short on money.

Thanks for posting your specs up.

Well, that's actually not what I would call a good video card. The Geforce2 is actually really old, the MX400 was introduced back in 2001. You could probably play some low end MMO's like the original EverQuest or some others like that possibly, but none of the new stuff. And a single core AMD running at 1.2GHz isn't helping. As i said, you can probably play some older MMO's like Ultima Online or EverQuest and maybe some of the 2D MMO's on the market.

Is there a specific game you're having trouble with, have you tried some of the older stuff that you might be able to actually run or just newer 3D games?

I'm having trouble with all games...

But if it has requirements lower or a tiny bit higher than the requirements of the MMORPG Dofus or the MMOSG Furcadia it'll work.

As my computer currently is, I don't even think it can play Ragnarok or any 3D game.

I mean, it could've played PotC Online, but that kept freezing up. As did this game The World.

And screen recorders don't work on my computer, so I have no proof. :(

Ok, i just checked the requirements for Dofus, and you definitely meet those. That game should actually run smooth for you. If there's higher graphical games that you really want to play, you're unfortunately going to have to at least upgrade your video card a little bit. You could probably pawn some older AGP video card off of someone for extremely cheap. You might be able to check ebay or craigslist in your area or something.

If Dofus is even giving you problems, or you're having slow downs elsewhere on your computer...well i'd recommend this anyway if you haven't really upkept your computer. Download ccleaner, run it to clean up the registry and all of the unnecessary files on your computer (believe the default scan is sufficient). Then defrag your hard drive(s) through windows.

You can download ccleaner here. Just click on "Download latest version" in the top right corner.

btw...you also seem to meet the requirements for PotC (im assuming that's pirates of the caribbean online). The Geforce2 MX400 is a 64MB card, think it had a 32MB variant, but either way PotC only requires a basic 32MB video card. Or so it says.

As he said, that computer is really really out dated. The processor is slower then the processor I had 3 computers ago. The ram is ok, but there is definitely a lot of room for improvement there. The video card is ridiculously old and out dated. You won't be able to run much, and even what you can run probably won't run very well unless it is an old game.

On a side note for you meeting system requirements and not being able to play, I would expect that. I have seen many many many games have the same issues. I've tried installing games on friends or my girlfriends computer where they meet or barely exceed the minimum system requirements an the game was still unplayable. In fact, I can't really remember any experience with a game where I met the minimum requirements and it worked good. I can remember specifically with Star Wars Galaxies I had the minimum required 512mb of ram, and the game ran ok out in the open world, but was so ridiculously jumpy in cities where there were a lot of objects and people that it was barely playable. I quickly ordered an extra Gigabyte of ram and the problem was completely gone.

Games are very demanding these days, and to run things at the best graphics, you unfortunately have to keep updating your comp. Hell, I'm running a Q6600 2.4 ghz quad core processor, 8800GTS video card, and 3.6gb of ram on XP and I'm planning on building a new rig next summer, just so I can conquerer anything any game can throw at me. Plus I like building and tweaking stuff.

Tried: LotR, CoH, AoC, WAR, Jumpgate Classic
    Played: SWG, Guild Wars, WoW
    Playing: Eve Online, Counter-strike
    Loved: Star Wars Galaxies
Waiting for: Earthrise, Guild Wars 2, anything sandbox.

Every single game used to work on my computer then it all just stopped working for no apparent reason.

And my other computer has a lower graphics card yet all MMOs work on that one.

If that's the case, do what i said earlier. Download ccleaner and run it, then defrag your hard drive. You have any virus protection on your computer btw? If not, I'd recommend AVG (it's free, just do a google search for "free AVG") Then do a scan of your computer and see what it comes up with.

  • InunahInunah Member Posts: 51

I'd defrag and virus scan my comp if it didn't take ten hours! (exaggeration)

Seriously, there's nothing else to do other than play on computer, even though there are 2 computers, a Wii, a Gamecube, a SNES, a NES, a DS, a GBA, a GBC, a pool, 4 TVs, Magazines, and DVDs!!!

Virus scans and defrags slow my computer down. And since all there is to do is go on the internet (currently) then why have a slowed down internet?

BTW, i'm not downloading Ccleaner. I'm only allowed to download 1 more thing, and if it's Ccleaner then why did I make this thread so I can sort out my comp issues for an MMO?

Heh, well defrags and virus scans will probably slow your comp down, especially defrags. Just run it while you're not doing anything on the computer and let it run while you sleep or something.

If the computer is as old as I believe it to be, you really need to run ccleaner or at least the "disk cleanup" utility inside windows to get rid of any files clogging your computer up or possibly slowing it down. You really need to defrag the drive as well to get rid of fragmented files and gain smoother performance. And if you've never done a virus scan, you really should. It can't do anything but help. And this goes beyond just not being able to play a game, it's the overall health of your computer. If you can't do these things, then there's not really much else anyone here can do for you.

Hope something works for you though.
