I suggest trying .hack//sign. Not a true MMO, but as close as you'll get for free.

Here is a list of free mmorpg's, I recommend this one though, it seems to fit your criteria, oh, and prepare to be flamed by members here, because there are a lot of "Where can I find a free mmorpg"

if soe is so bad? then why do they have one of the biggest mmorpgs around......why do they have one of the biggest mmorpgs thats been around for like 5+ years?
why does ever server in that game have like 10,000+ games?
because their games arew awesome....
like everquest is one of the best mmorpgs I have played..and I am still playing as a matter of fact.....so yeah....
before oyu go off saying a companie sux you should give some good reasons why

He was talking about SOE's customer service, which even if you have great games, service matters. Look at the whole SWG duped credits scandal and how many fans they alienated there thanks to poor execution in the costumer service department. So they have on of the largest and most popular mmorpg's out there, the fact is, they have a holier than thou attitude that tends to not rub well with many people. He doesn't really have to give reasons why SOE's costumer service sucks ass, it's a well known fact that they are notoriously bad with it. Sure you may say "EVERQUEST IS COOLESTMMORPG EVAR!!!111" but your not really giving points to back up what your saying either.

Oh god!!!!! No , No No nO lo.. That game is the biggest peice of crap....no offense , the graphics arnt even anime stlye lol the game looks and plays like its 10 years old.

Yeah, gekkeiju, looks pretty far from anything animeish. Except maybe the website. But that's about as far as it stretches.
It's called a signature, moron. Instead of flashy pictures and stuff, I use a quote I made myself, thanks. Anymore questions? I don't flame, but I tend to pick on the ignorant people who ignore the top post that says FREE MMORPGs/MMOGs. Anyone who asks without reading that needs to be pimpslapped.

In all fairness, it's a bit hard to tell it was a Signature quote, especially when your used to forums that have some sort of divider like myself, hence why I continued the rant about it (In your favor however)
A. Be careful to whom you flame towards. Trolls aren't appreciated much here.
B. Make your signature more of a *signature*

Perhaps, but I'm far, far too lazy to make it stand out. Maybe tommorrow I'll BOLD it or put it in a color or something. Depends on how I feel. In any case, I already flamed a moron about posting free servers for p2p games. I have half a mind to send all the posts for them directly to the proper companies to file lawsuits and take all your worldly possessions. If you want a free game, play a free game. DON'T STEAL P2P GAMES! IT RAISES THE COST FOR THE REST OF US! If you want to play a quality game get a job, or get a better job, sell some crap on ebay, or beg your mommy and daddy to pay for the game. I'm sick and tired of people pulling this crap.

Chances are, if there are free servers and the like to p2p games, the companies generally know all about it. It's not like they try and hide what they do or anything. Anyone with Half a brain and google could find them.
Although I do see your point in the frustration.
I 100% agree with you that people should not post free servers. In my opinion, they should all be banned when they post that.
If we all agreed to the law of the land with pay 2 play games, you are right, the game would probably be cheaper.
But Im hoping the original poster meant a free anime mmorpg and not a hacked server one

All I have to say is one word. "Naboo". If you don't know what that means, then you know nothing about SOE. As for EQ, lets see, something VERY similar happened as well, but i forget the location. In anycase, if you've dealt with SOE's CS, then you agree with me 100%. And as stated by a previous poster, and myself, IT'S MY SIGNATURE, nothing to do with the original post.

There is this free anime-style cell shading chars MMORPG I know. But it's still in korean. Yeah, it is in open beta.
