I had to go and refresh my memory, it's been about 6 years since I read it and I didn't think too much of the book.
I'm sure someone could make a very good movie about it though.
No required quests! And if I decide I want to be an assassin-cartographer-dancer-pastry chef who lives only to stalk and kill interior decorators, then that's who I want to be, even if it takes me four years to max all the skills and everyone else thinks I'm freaking nuts. -Madimorga-
My mum always taught me to never read fiction because it's a complete waste of time so if you read a book to make it something factual so you actually learn something. Besides why read a Fictional book when you can watch the movie?

No offense to your mother but that is some of the shittest advice I've ever heard, I don't see how entertainment can be a 'complete waste of time' (although that is subjective), you may as well give up on watching most movies and pretty much every videogame there is. Besides you will find that the book is generally better than the movie.
Sitting there reading a book sounds alot more boring to me than watching a movie with mates having a laugh, books are prety antisocial and for loners where everyone can share the movie experience on the screen and have a piss up. I've been watching them Universe things from the History Channel and tbh I'd rather watch them because I'm learning about how we think the universe works, instead of wondering if Frodo is gay.
Also I tend to just play multiplayer games so I can be the best at the game, how many pc's me and my mate smashed up in our CS days

R U HIGH?! "books are antisocial and for loners" ? The most stupid thing I've read today.
It's a shame but they would probably ruin Catcher in the Rye anyways.
It'll never happen anytime soon. Three reasons.
1. Salinger will never approve a movie adaptation while he's alive.
2. He's getting old, so lets say he dies soon. It's still very controversial. But yeah, some really big names have expressed interest despite the controversy. One starts with an 'S' and ends with 'berg'.
3. Even then, studios would have to OK it. But there's simply no market because recognition is too low. It's so damn banned in schools that most people below the age of thirty haven't read it, and most below the age of twenty haven't even heard of it. Funny how our schools have become so much less violent, with so much less sex, without the book around to talk about these issues.
Then again, it's not a movie which requires a big budget. Here's what I think will happen. Within the next ten years, Salinger will die. If he doesn't expressly forbid it in his will, we'll probably see an adaptation from a big name director. It would be low-budget with small name actors. Basically, it would be a big director challenging himself to make something artful, rather than a blockbuster.

Here's the thing with books vs movies/TV shows. Books give you much more information and flesh out the story or character much, much more than a movie or TV show could ever do. Books also stimulate the imagination where movies and TV shows are only one vision of the story and/or subject, books let you create out own vision and ideas. Books are also a good way to stimulate the thought processes. I don't think sitting in frontof a TV or in a movie theater is known for being that intellectually stimulating.
As for books being antisocial, I guess you've never heard of book clubs where people sit around and discuss about the book of the that everyone in the group has read. Sounds pretty social to me!.

As soon as he started talking about CS - - the reason as to why he's saying what he is fell into place.
(No offense to all you CS players that aren't complete morons, yes, all two of you <_< . . . >_>)
But all in all, books > movie. However, there is an exception to this rule. When a book is based off a movie, it sucks, hard.
Read the Clone Wars book that was based on the "second" Star Wars film. It felt as though I was reading the manuscript directly, imo.

i know where you're coming from. trust me though, you miss so much from just watching the movie. good movies are really rare. good movies invoke emotion. most books can invoke emotion because you can read what the characters are feeling.
you can almost smell the leather couch when reading the description. you cannot do that when looking at a scene. staring at the pretty actor who can't invoke shit because he or she is a weirdo in real life.
for instance, tom cruise will never get any emotion out of me. ill always wonder how someone can believe what he believes.
or i might just stare at (insert pretty actress here) her body and be distracted...

you forget to mention that the movie-experience based on a book is mostly not half as good as the book...
Anyway, back to the original question...The book from the 20th century that I still regret there is no movie, is Neuromancer by W.Gibson.
But, luckily, that's about to change in 2010

Ichben... is that you?
Do I look like Ichben my son? Do I look like the child of the Tower?
No, I am not Ichben. I am not the boy. Our friend Ichben is not here. Ichben is in another place and another time desperately trying to find his way through the darkness. He is desperately trying to find his way to the light. Hopefully he will find his way back home. In the meantime I will do what I can to keep his spirit alive. I love him. I am not Ichben. I am not the boy.
This is the last time I will answer this question. If anybody else ask me if I am Ichben I will get very upset. I will punish you. I will take you to room 101 and punish you carebear style. And believe me you will wish you never had crossed me. Now for your father's sake stop pestering me with silly questions and get back to the topic AT HAND!!!!
what is in room 101 kingcarebear? this is not an attempt to get you mad although i would enjoy seeing that. a genuine question. You don't want to get me mad boy. Trust me Mr. Berry, and trust me well. You won't like me when I'm angry. You won't like me when I'm mad. With that being said, I must say I am surprised you are not familiar with room 101. What have you been doing all these years you've been on earth? Living under a rock? Living in a hole? Regardless of what you have been doing does not matter to me to a large extent. What matters is you know what room 101 is and what is it about. Let me tell you the story my son, let me tell you the tale.
A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away there was a supernatural being called "Big Brother." The year was 1984 and in this galaxy of galaxies Big Brother was the King of Kings. No one could touch him. No one could even say his name without being beaten and taken to the infamous room 101. Room 101 was created by Big Brother himself. He along with the inner party pigs created the room to manipulated the masses. They wanted to control the people. They wanted to control the prolls.
A lone warrior named Winston tried to fight against the forces of evil. He tried to defeat Big Brother and the party of pigs. Sadly he failed in his quest to save the prolls and in turn, he lost his humanity and his precious loved one, Julia. Not much is known about this distant place in this distant galaxy. Whether it still exist or not is still unknowned. But the room Mr. Berry, the room still stands, it still remains a danger to society and it must be avoided at all cost. Or else, you too will loose your humanity, ALL OF YOU will loose your humanity to the infamous room 101.
There you have it my friend. This is the infamous room 101. I hope you are satisfied with the information. I hope you are pleased. Now I must return to my slumber so I may rest and dream of candy canes and gum drops.

You children are fools!!! Don't you kids know the greatest book of the 20th century that has yet to be a movie is the "Dark Tower" series by the great Stephen King? How could you children have forgotten such a great piece of work. Granted it is not a single book, it is still an amazing piece of literature.
How could you boys be so blind!!!! It is painfully clear you all have forgotten the faces of your fathers and should be gven a spanking by the Gunslinger himself. Pull down your pants children, it's time for Roland to administer the punishment.
