It really depends on how old your machine is, I suppose. If it's a 'new'-ish unit, and you plan to have it around for gaming for a few years, I would upgrade.
if your getting Vista then get more Ram, you don't have a choice even if your not getting vista, you can't have a good pc like this and only 1 gig of ram... its illogical
*sigh* Again this kind of conversation... ANYTHING works on Vista. Why shouldn't it work? Pretty much the same renderer, same core, just a few visual adjustments, and a few memory leaks. But why should you use Vista? It's pretty much the same as XP, performs slightly worse, and DX 10(.1) is a commercial trick. Developers don't even use PS 2.0 correctly, then why would you buy an whole new OS, for PS 4.0/4.1?
DX 10's lighting is just making it easier for developers, it could have been done a long time ago. The 'improved' water isn't that new neither, it's just brought to the attention...
The only advise I can give you is; don't expect any big changes.
You know it, the best way to realize your dreams is waking up and start moving, never lose hope and always keep up.
Thanks for the feedback. Sort of figured the hardware would be OK. I already have copy of 32 bit Vista that I got with computer last year. I put XP back on since I was having problems then as Vista was just released. I had heard that there were still a lot of driver problems with 64bit OS and no real advantages? Are there any plus/minus for Vista vs XP as far as software configuration/compatability. I would like to be able to install and play without troubleshooting, reconfiguring, etc.
If you have the RAM (which obviously you do) then I'd say definitely go for Vista. Vista more or less is just a memory eater, and you have memory coming out of your computer's earpiece sockets (see whut I did thar?). Make sure to get 64-bit as well unless you plan on buying 32-bit and then upgrading to 64-bit in 3 months. You're going to need it to be able to use all your RAM.
EDIT: Basically, the main difference between 32-bit and 64-bit is how it uses system memory. 64-bit uses your computer at twice the rate of 32-bit. The thing is, most computers don't really need it. It only really applies when a computer is, at the time, using a lot of your system. 32-bit is for computers that are, generally, not used for gaming. The reason people are suggesting 64-bit to you is because you intend to be playing games on it. Since video games tend to use a huge amount of your computer, 64-bit would work much better then 32-bit. In other words, 32-bit is built to not have to run at max all the time. 64-bit is built for computers that intend to do so, but is a waste if it isn't. The only real problems 64-bit has currently that 32-bit doesn't is it's lack of drivers. Even with the problems with 64-bit, in my opinion, it outweighs getting a 32-bit OS (in the long run).

I'm not in Beta but if you do upgrade make sure you get the Vista 64 bit Ultimate
I can confirm that WAR runs fine on 32bit Vista Home Premium, if that helps.......
Looking at your specs I would say WAR will run fine.
It runs VERY WELL on my Macbook Pro (Bootcamp Vista, 2.33ghz C2Duo, 2GB RAM & ATi X1600 Mobility).
With those specs, you will get the same experience with both xp or vista. You should be able to run the game with everything maxed out.

I play WAR on both XP Pro and Vista Home Premium 32bit.
There is no difference in terms of performance or stability between the OS'es.
Also, to the guys suggesting he needs more RAM, I would sugggest you go check his specs again. I missed it first time round. He has 4GB of RAM.
Good luck in WAR. It's not too bad a game
I personally like vista I am running 64 bit HP

If only SW:TOR could be this epic...
i run vista ultimate XFX 8800GTX , 4 gigs of ram, Q6600 ( ususally OCed but not at the moment )
0 problems playing WAR . large scale battles i may have to turn enemy names off if there is 100 + people fighting it out but other then that 0 lag .
hope that helps
You're fine, enjoy Vista.
PS you can turn off most of those resource hogs.
