I have to quit..

I dont know what it is..but I think I have a addiction with MMORPGs. I know I have to try to quit, but I just keep coming back. I have to quit, im putting MMOs in front of some things that deffinitly should be more important. Im only 14 so its one of my few forms of entertainment until I get older. But me playing them has really gotten out of control. I usually play them half the day with it being summer and I just think it makes me a better person if I quit them.  The problem is like I said, I keep coming back. I know I need to quit, but I love MMOs and feel like I cant just give them up. So..can somone give me suggestions on what to do? Or please give me some support. Im tired of having MMOs control my life. But I cant walk away =(. Im trying to get into my Console games because their great fun, but dont have the same addictive nature. Somone give me support please..

Trade down your graphics card and drop your RAM so your computer is unable to run most MMORPGs.  Uninstall Windows and load up Ubuntu.  Take up a new hobby such as learning a musical instrument or drawing.  Start an exercise program and take walks or bike rides for two hours a day.

Basically what I'm saying is put obstacles in between you and your addiction and find new things to fill in your free time that are not self-destructive.

Firstly, you've only played Maplestory for 8hrs, so it's not that bad.

But, it sounds that your Xfire is wrong, so anyway.  Try balance.  I have been rather out of control with them lately as well, but I find other things to do.  Do things with friends, excersise, etc.  Just find other things to do.  Then, once you've done other things for awhile, playy your game for a couple hours.

Just balance it out and do other things.  Also, mabye school will bring a change.  Try joining after school clubs and get your mind of gaming, that should help.

Hope this helps man and best of luck.

Also, do what makes you happy.  Don't do things you don't like, just do what you think is best.

I've been the same way all my life starting with FF1 on NES and pulling all nighters at age 9 hiding under my bed.

Honestly the best things for me have always been expressing creativity instead of turning my brain off and experiencing someone elses.

The best things that have pulled me away have been programming, modding existing games, writing(fiction, novels, short stories) and Astronomy.  If you can score a decent Telescope for a birthday or xmas or something or can check out a friends it can be amazing.  There is nothing more humbling than realizing how tiny you are in the big scope of things.

Lastly start exercising/working out/playing sports.  You only have one body so take care of it.  Shutting off your brain to play games non stop doesn't help anything.  Once you get it under control you can enjoy them without getting obsessed.

    Good luck man.

So you posted this at an MMORPG site? It's like going to a crack house asking the local drug addicts how to quit

You really don't have to quit just stop raiding and just PK. That's much less time consuming

My guess is you are hooked on WoW?

here is an idea. Set some real world goals... 2 hours in the gym, finishi homework, do 1 hour of chores, etc.

For every project you finish you get an hour of game time. so this way you can earn your game time and still get things done. If you don't do a goal then you don't play.

meh who am I kidding anyway all MMORPGs are time consuming one way or another... Well you could play Guild Wars and try to use that to ease you out. There is also FPS games like BF2142. The last time I "quit" I joined a clan and played that hardcore til they all left bf2142 for WoW. Now they back playing CoD4

You also wean yourself off by playing mini-MMOs like Neverwinter Nights.

single player rpgs does the trick for me along with FPS. I found myself not playing MMOs for many weeks

Sorvath wrote a good post tho

Good decision to quit, MMO's are designed to hook you so don't feel bad that they succeeded. You're far better off getting your life back than becoming uber in some game that will not even exist in 10 years.

For those who are able to keep MMO's in their place, and carry on a RL, bravo, you have a gift. :-P

8 hours of maplestory in a week and 50 hours overall and you think that your addicted?  In order to fix your obsession,  find other games that are very good and that you enjoy playing.  Like Mass effect or Devil may cry 4.

<--- 90 hours in a week and 4k hours of wow, 6.1k hours of games in general.  Ide be much more worried about me then about you.

Do you really wanna hear all that bitching while you are trying to play MMOs though?

"you never spend any time with me, all you do is play that GD game all day!" blah blah blah

"you said we could watch Gilmore Girls when your raid is done 'in about a half hour' 5 hours ago!" blah blah blah

"you said you would cook me dinner and all I see on the table is a pack of unopened hotdogs and ketchup packets" blah blah blah

If your X-fire sig is all you have played you sir have nothing to worry about. You are not addicted at all so play more then worry.

Don't worry about it, kid.  After a while you will become jaded and bored like the rest of us.

Pick up real world hobbies. Mine would be collecting, treasure hunting (always fun, but in Aus the only treasure you find would be pretty boring) and clay target shooting, shooting in general.

Since you're in USA I presume, you can go get a shotgun - double barrel over and under pretty easily, as it's in your constitution, go there and go find a clay target club and try that out.

Treasure hunting involves a metal detecter and a shovel and trowel. Go somewhere historical, such as your bedroom (only kidding) and start searching for stuff.

Collecting, well go buy stamps, get rolls of coins, foreign money etc, and start collecting.

If you can't do that you can always collect dust, my computer does that for me.

Join the Boy Scouts. They let you shoot things, and you can even level up in ranks
