I paid for gold in WOW when the economy was in the crapper and had little choice. This was before Blizz went after the WoW glider folks and others. Now I would have to say no, I would not buy in game money. Games are now being made to have thriving economys using real world market limitations to break up any unforseen factors that would drive up cost of items. Well if the devolopers give a shit that is.
I guess I've never been one who plays games to be 'rich'. Especially WoW. I mean, what do you really have to show for your wealth in WoW? There's no in-game housing or anything really cool to show off your wealth, so what does it matter? Are you going to take screen shots of you standing at your bank in order to show off your bling and your bankroll?
Where purchasing in-game currency would come into play for me... I hate crafting. I think it's crap, complete and total crap. A big friggin' waste of time, because I believe that these MMORPG's should be more about 'keep what you kill' than they are. So, I have to pay for the stuff that some of the crafting type folks have made.
I don't want those prices to climb out of my reach, but then again... I don't want to spend a lot of time worrying about farming money and all of that. Remember, I'd rather be killing, not care-bearing/crafting.
So, if I can plop down $10 and come away with enough in game $$$$$ to buy what I need now and have some left over for next time, I'd probably do it.
...
I'd be more likely to buy in-game services than currency, however. After you grind your way to cap level a few times in a game, why do it again? I'd rather just fork over some currency and have a cap level toon, imho.

Dont you think its unfair to the others who are actually "working" their way towards a maxed or rich character? Whats the point of playing when everyone just buys their "accomplishments" with real life cash?
It all becomes meaningless. Who cares about achieving something when another impatient player just instantly bought the same thing with real cash?
Just because ppl dont wanna work dosent mean its ok for them to cheat their way to the top.
If Bob works 60 hours a week and you work part time, should the two of you get the same paycheck?
Ppl want all the rewards with none of the work, and it kills the game.
Its multiplayer. Aka theres competition. Those who dont care to put forth much effort are supposed to have less than the ones who work hard.

Oh, and thanks London
No, it's not fair. But I play a game to have fun, not work, and sometimes I'd rather pay others to do things I don't want to do or don't have time to do myself. (Money, is of course, a proxy for time and/or ability.)
As I posted earlier in this thread, I have bought in-game money with RL money in the past. But for a variety of reasons, I doubt I would do so again.

...but you can bet Bob...who loves mmo's..and having worked 60 hrs that week...will be quite tempted to take some of his big paycheck and buy game items/gold to allow him bridge the gap. The gap created because..someone who can afford to work part-time..or not at all...can spend as many hours a week on a game as Bob does working for a living. Even though i would not buy virtual game items again...I can understand why some would. Especially if they want to remain competive with friends who started playing simultaneously with the imaginary Bob...and have the luxury of abundant free time.
No... If it's necessary to purchase in-game money with REAL money then the game isn't worth playing.
And, on the flip... even if it's POSSIBLE to buy in-game money with real money that is such a HUGE waste of money that it's not even amusing. MMO's are already overpriced (at $15/mo) There is no way in hell I'd pay real $$$ for in game money, no matter how good the game was.
Hell in EVE I actually use in-game money so that I don't have to pay my monthly subscription. I just buy game time codes with isk from the idiots who seem to have a burning need to get in game money with real money. Funny thing is those folks die just fine to my guns even with their added 'income' from buying isk from me, and other players, via selling game time codes for isk.
But back to the OP: No, I would never even consider buying items or money, in a game, for real money. I don't even like paying subscription fees if I can avoid it.

I've bought stuff for games with real money before (ONLY though if the game supports such purchases, like F2P). If I enjoy playing a game, I like to put a little money back into it. For the MMO to continue running and paying its employees, they need money. And if I enjoy a game, I feel that spending a little bit is a way of saying "yes, I'm enjoying my experience here, good job."
I personally have rules though. Such as, never buying any single item that costs more than $5, or never buying gold or any item with the intent of selling it for gold. So it's never gotten out of hand.
If I pay $15 a month for one game, I don't mind spending $15 a year to support a free game. Plus, I like a lot of the cosmetic things you can buy for your character
i would only buy it in 1 game, and thats lineage 2.

I'd feel like I wasted my money if I bought gold. Though i'm very frugal and pretty much every penny i earn goes to savngs for school.
I have no problem with anyone who does decide to buy gold, and I certainly don't look down on them.

If the game requires one to purchase money to play, then it isn't worth playing in the first place.
The exception would be an item mall game, but that is a very different case.
