For me EverQuest will always be the best game ever made no matter what happens. I still play EQ and still is the only game that has so much content to keep u hooked for life. I will be playing EQ2 when its out, but u bet that i wont cancel my EQ account. EQ2 will set the bar for the next generation of MMORPGS, but EQ1 will still be the king of all time just like Michael Jordan in the NBA, Pele in soccer and EQ in the mmorpg world.

You can disagree with me but anyone who has played EQ knows what i mean.

I was just perusing through the topics and found this one and had to vote and then reply.. mostly because I love to talk and type and say a lot of things, but to me Everquest is the best MMORPG out there and it's up on its own level. I have played a bunch of MMORPGs and I can never get too far into any of them because Everquest (in my eyes) surpasses them all and I do not mean because of the graphics of the characters or the beauty of the world, but because it is so vast and extreme and there is just so much to do and experience and that is what I look for in a game. Everquest .. there is just so much to see, do, experience, explore, sit around and do nothing with... It is so fun!

Ask yourself....how many people who vote on this actually played (or play) Eq1?  If it was only people who play Eq1 then I would say the #'s of people saying yes would be around 95%.

I wish you had a third choice of "kinda".

I played EQ for 2-2.5 years the game itself was nice, but service was not what it should have been.

If service is lacking in a MMORPG that can make your experience playing...well unpleasant to say the least. That is what hapen't to me. image

I was an EQ junkie for 2+ years.  I quit back in 2001 to jump to Dark Age, as I was getting tired of EQ.  I didn't play DAoC for long (I have since gone back), but never went back to EQ.  Still, I have very fond memories of my days there.

Two weeks ago I DLed the EQ free trial just to wander around and revist some of my old stomping grounds.  I have to say I was very disappointed in the game in general.  While it was nostalgic to run through Ro and Innothule and S. Karana, I thought the graphics were poor and the interface was less than spectacular.  Granted, I'm used to DAoC, but my trip back to Norrath poured a bit of cold water on my warm & fuzzy memories.

EverQuest is a great game, but the MMORPG world has advanced greatly since SOE launched EQ and I think a new player (or at least a new to EQ player) would see that starkly.

I myself played EQ for about 3-6 months in total and I have fond memories of the game.  I too, downloaded the trial and became somber at what EQ has turned out to be.  I quit back in Sept of 2002 because the game seemed to be High End only, and I remember one of the developers saying something about pushing HIGH END only for it as well, mentioning that it killed the game for new players.

Either way, I enjoyed the time I spent in the EQ world, but to be honest, games have become much better than the original EverQuest, though, if you've never played it, it should be something of interest for you.

I played EQ when it first was released. I played for 2 years but it became apparent SO were lying about what they said EQ would have (I never liked deception, & never forgive anyone whom deceives me) that became my problem with them (SO).image

I played EQ when it first came out for over 3 years.  It was a great game.  The thing that drove me away was that they turned it into a raiding game where only powerlevelers and people with 10+ hours a day made meaningful progress.  Most of my ingame and real life friends quit for the same reason.  I really wished things had gone better.  I'm hoping EQ2 will keep thier word on raiding(they say 6 hour max long raids) which is still very long, but much shorter than those 10 hour raids where you can't break to take a piss.

I LOVE / HATE EQ I am still playing started in beta2 and soon to be getting expansion 8 I love the friends I have made there and a few of us old school players are still around. What I hate is the time sinks and zones you have to have a raid force to unlock the path to get into. My toon is a 65 cleric top guild on server and yeah I am one of the 10+hour aday players everyone whines about keeping up with but, I like spending time chatting and wondering around doing random acts of kindness all this flag and keys stuff makes me have to grind away not just be a part of my world.

IF something better comes along I will be gone but having tried to escape EQ by playing everything else MMORPG that I can get my hands on I am still waiting for a game to step up with the goods.

PS SWG sux 4 accounts 2 Jedis still sux ashamed to have been in the beta for it begged them to not release it as it was far from ready and sadly still is. Beautiful vast and varied lands calling to you to explore them and find NOTHING IS OUT HERE! lol

That's kind of how my EQ story goes, only I went back to EQ not DAoC. I then started playing SWG when it was released, and only occasionally played EQ. I eventually stopped playing EQ all together around April. I voted for like, but I don't see my self going back to it anytime soon.

EQ is a game that forces you to play a decent amount IF and i say IF, you want to be a top notch player in a top notch guild. Just as any game would do, EQ places you in a position to choose the char you want to play. Based off of that choice, you can get a group easily, or it can be hard to get into a group, thus making your leveling exp harder to get.

If you really wanted to be a Ranger, than expect alot of your time to be spent LFG. Don't whine or complain about it, YOU made the choice. So all the people who complain about it taking loads of time to level appear to not have the right frame of mind when it comes to the game. You want to level quickly, always be wanted in groups? Then first and formost, keep a good reputation with other people you interact with, then choose a char that is a needed class in most groups ie Clerics, Shamans, Enchanters, Wars, Rogues, and lastly, some form of spell damage which could be a Mage or Wiz.

I love those people who also say they went to play some other game like Dark Ages and find the interface to be sub par in EQ. Well, lets look at that shall we? I was one of those people laughing at the people leaving EQ for Dark Ages when it first came out, most of us were right to do so since most of the people who left EQ for Dark Ages came crying back saying how crappy DA was. Lets keep in mind also that Dark Ages was made LONG after EQ first came out, you would expect it to have a more high tech interface. That's not to say you can go out and get a badass interface for EQ because you can, i used one that i thought rocked for several years now, here's a link to a pic of it in action http://www.roi-guild.com/roi/zun5.jpg  -  In any event, i find myself laughing at most people who complain about EQ in some way because once you start asking more direct questions in regards to their experience, you generally find out that it was to hard for them so they must talk smack about it, or that it took to much time for them to become badass in the game because they have a wife/kids/job/school/crazy mother/abusive father/alcoholic cat whatever the case may be.

I wish people would just be more honest about their own experiences and call things for what they are. I mean, i remember several times now when SOE would come on and do a server wide notice letting us know we just beat the 400,000 mark of people logging in....400,000 people logged in at once and it was a weeknight and nothing special was going on in game. This was just a few months ago too, in the evening. A few weeks later, that number went up further, so you tell me...do we take the word of the whiners out there who can't hack it in game or 400,000+ other souls out there doing the best they can in a game they either love, or love to hate. In either case, they're still playing it.

I voted no, but I guess in all fairness, I really have to say I never gave it a chance. A friend of mine was really excited about it, but I swore I'd never pay to play (he I didn't know any better) finally EQ had a free trail (a few years ago). So I tried it. I knew the server and my friend was a dark elf enchanter, so I went Dark Elf too. I started in the Dark Elf town with no idea where to go who to talk to or what to do. I wandered around aimlessly for a bit. Then I called my friend who finally showed me where to find the guild trainer. I could never find the way outside without my friend showing me and said to heck with this.

Recently I DL'd the new trial figuring this time I'd give it a fair shot. I picked Elona (humans good at magic) sorceror. The tutorial helped a lot and started me out right in front of the guild, so I thought cool this is a lot better. One of my first quests from the guild trainer was kill frost goblins. I had no idea where to find frost goblins or how tough they would be when I did find them. I eventually found a book in the middle of the forest and that brought me to the teleport stones. Spent two days trying to find the stone to get me to frost goblins (no one would help me when I asked). I finally found the right stone, teleport out and then proptly get eaten by a wolf. That's when I decided this was the worst game I ever played ::::35::

I later learned the lack of help stemmed from the old timers getting fed up with all the noob jerks that flooded the server with the free trial.

heh - I started playing the day Kunark came out in EQ and have been playing ever since. I remember not knowing sh*t about where to go, or what to do in game. I remember some druid porting me to the druid rings in WC and saying good luck to me at level 3. I died so many times trying to get to freeport from West Commons. That didn't stop me though, it only made me want to know what all these other people obviously knew. If they could do, why couldn't I type of a mind set.

So it took sometime and i found that on my old server the main trading place was at the tunnel in EC. I would sit there alot and listen to people talk, and i would learn from the things they would say. I would also learn how to sell and buy. One of the greatest things i learned was that there were web sites out on the web that told you what you needed to know and that there were MAPS of the zones.

So needless to say, i made it past those first few weeks as a complete and utter n00b and did very well in EQ, hell...still am doing very well i might add.

So to Jodokai i must say that you obviously didn't try hard enough or didnt think enough of the game to give it a fair shot like hundreds of thousands of other people have and still are. Couldn't even get out of the starting city? Are you kidding me? Dude...go online and see the HUGE amounts of info there is on this game and invest some time in it. You ONLY get what you invest. heh

I started back a few months after its release. Played for 2-3months, ditched it, went back to UO, then droped out of MMORPG's for a long time. Anarchy Online brought me back....then I think planetside and now WoW is where I am planted. Though I am on temp leave for school as such.

As for why I didn't like eq? Not sure. Probably cause I wasn't in a guild, and after spending a whole day trying to get one quest item off a rare spawn, I said "WTF am I doing?" and deleted all my chars+account. Thus ended the eq era. Probably for the best too. Sadly, probably wouldn't be in university had I become an addict (Like one of the people I knew in high school. Last I heard he was working some crappy job... still playing eq)

Mainly, I don't want to spend my life in-game in order to have a good time, and every mmo so far requires that.(WoW took a diff approch, so it might work.)

Thus I voted under hate it, because there was no vote for dislike/indifferent.

"You ONLY get what you invest." And thats what scares me away from alot of MMO's ::::31::

  • lstruiksmalstruiksma Member Posts: 16

I understand where you're comin` from because EQ does take a large investment of time if you're wanting to be in the top end of the game. However, if you read about EQ2, you'll see they are doing the same things WoW is to make the game more enjoyable for the "casual" gamer like yourself.

Weather i agree with the approach Sony is taking towards the casual gamer or not doesn't matter, what does matter though is that people like yourself who only will be putting in a limited amount of time will still find it rather enjoyable.

My suggestion is to read more about EQ2 before making the kind of choice you apparently already have.

  • ZunaroZunaro Member Posts: 32

I have invested 50 days of play time into my lvl 65 Beastlord with 29aa ( Z-E-R-O flags ) EQ really sucks at times, and sometimes it owns, I guess I would vote yes, I like it though.

I started off saying that I probably didn't give it enough time, but I'm the type of guy who doesn't like to read directions. I like to jump in and figure it out. I've played a lot of other MMO's and never had much of a problem with the basics. But when you start a game and it gives you a quest with no direction on how to complete the quest, that game is seriously lacking. I'm not talking spoon feed me, but at least tell me what the name of the town is or how to travel there or something. Not just: Find this type of creature in the HUGE world we've spent 5 years building...good luck.

/Agree with Jodokai the quest system is seriously lacking... It is stupid that you even have to go to allak or similar sites to get the info you need to finish a quest...

    Love it.  Plain and simple.

The only problem I have with it is the god-damned drama.  A perfectly healthy guild dies because of 2 damn members, people not letting old issues die, and stubborn people.

But then again, the reason why I play EQ is because I hate people in real life(in general).  The more time I'm holed up in my room playing a game, the better the mood I'm in.

EQ became king thanks to Variant. I fell for EQ thanks to Variant. Sony has changed it to the point I have very little reason to play it. It simply grew to something that I didn't want to play anymore. It's the best MMORPG out there currently no matter how fancy anyone else gets.

Those who been with it forever has Variant to thank. I give very LITTLE credit to EQ since the guy currently running EQ is the ex head of variant and was probably asorbed to make sure people CONTINUE to play.

EQ IS King of the hill no question tho and I SERIOUSLY doubt EQ2 will do as good for as long as EQ1.

I would say the one thing EQ has is its HUGE size...

The felling when you come online and you are not really sure what you would like to go:

-solo and kill some giants for pure fun
-do some animal hunting to get the skins to train up your production skills
-go to some highlvl zone and try to solo take down something you read some other guy did on the forum
-go to a high lvl zone and join a skilled group and grind to get some new AA that would get you some extra bonus
-just sit in POK or Bazaar and listen to folks talk to your guildes and have a good time and help newb around with porting, buffing
-go and check some old (almost never used) zone where you had problems when you were low lvl and fell like a god coz there is nothing stoping you (that felling rocks) repeat after me PAYBACK TIME
-maybe go to some redesigned old zones that have some new contents
-surf the forums and boards (I bet EQ has the biggest internet base anywhere) and find out a piece of equipment you would like to have and just go for it yourself solo or get frinds to join along

There is so much i cant describe it all and all this freedom makes the real beuty of EQ, i for one often dont really have a goal when i log to EQ and i know anything i will pick will be fun.

Some folks are saying EQ is all about grinding and some more grinding... if you are grinding the whole time you are doing something wrong i think or you are just a EGO guy that has to be a Uber at anything he/she does. I love the felling that i still havent seen half of EQ and im 65 for a looooong time now. I try to do some stupid things all the time, try to take on stuff only full groups can my myself and often dieing to some stupid mistake (not knowing i tabed and selftargeted and casting root on myelf when there is a red con following me ::::01:: ).
