the way they policed the forums removing tons of the negative posts i don't think you could blame it on the forums. i knew that once people got past the pretty graphics they'd see just how shallow and incomplete this game really is.
Gamers with access to the internet need to realize that if you don't like a game you just don't play it and that's all about it. Noone really cares if you like AoC or not, no need to bash it then, because that is what's killing it.
Randoms here and there, sign up on any gaming forum they can find and bash the game they dont like. Just dont play it. Its that simple.
Funcom didnt deliver what they promised i agree. But the game is fairly playable and by far more enjoyable than most of the other games out there. I dont think anyone is forcing you to play their game. In fact i believe that the haters are actually the ones who like the game and want to play it but some aspects of it drive them into hating it.
Then the opposite should be true too? If you are enjoying the game, you should not be posting on any forums. You should be playing the game.
Funcom didn't deliver on what it promised is about the only statement we agree on.
Unless it's a really good drug, generally you can stop doing something you really like and do some other things. At least I hope YOU can. Funcom didn't deliver on their promises, but the game is certainly not unplayable. I didn't really follow it until it was about to come out, I decided to try it out, and I liked it. Sure, bugs annoy the hell out of me, but I'm not sufficiently dramatic to end up cursing the world and going to the forums to spread my discontent. I'm leaving as soon as Warhammer comes out, but this game kept me entertained for a couple months in a way that many other MMOs out there couldn't do for me.
I think Baggs' statement is pretty much true in a lot of cases. The kind of hate AoC generates could only come from those who have suffered some sort of traumatic break-up. Either they expected too much, or they bought into everything Funcom was telling them up until it was too late.
90% of the so called "hype" was passed along through forums. 99% of the "don't play this game" shit is passed along through forums. How many people would have actually believed and expected a giant sparkling diamond the day it was released had it not been for forums?
It's word of mouth.
Before the internet and forums existed, people would have told friends, co-workers, school-mates, complete strangers they saw holding the box, etc. No doubt they still do.
The forums are just another means of people passing along that information. Were there no forums, the word would still have found its way around.... maybe not as quickly, but would have nevertheless.
What destroyed this game was its developers rolling trainwreck of blunders, bugs and PR spin that I guess it assumed its playerbase would be either too dense or too blindly loyal to notice.
If the game was a raving success, the forums would have, similarly, helped promote that success.
"If you just step away for a sec you will clearly see all the pot holes in the road, and the cash shop selling asphalt..." - Mimzel on F2P/Cash Shops
If players are complaining on the forums instead of playing the game, they are obviously unhappy about something. In my opintion, the developers have too much faith in the community. AoC could have been a great game if the community was worth a shit. You can't expect to lay a groundwork and hope the mouthbreathers who are used to content being shoveled down their throats, to come up with any creative way to generate a conflict that will engage the entiere server. You can't force players who should be playing Oblivion to group or join guilds.
You can create engaging content that pulls the community together for a common cause. Who's job is it, the developers or the players? I say both. And to me, both failed with this game so far.
Vault-Tec analysts have concluded that the odds of worldwide nuclear armaggeddon this decade are 17,143,762... to 1.
but will ruin this game is the xfire population I treat like a saint
And therein lies the downfall of game population. The bandwagon. It's like a domino effect. 5 people say the game is shit and post about it. 200 people read that post and are persuaded by it. I have seen numerous players dissuaded to play a game because of one persons "review" of it. If someone doesn't like that game, fine. You are more then welcome to your opinion. But do not start imposing that opinion on other people.
For example the other day, in the forums, someone stated the have played the game for 2 minutes. Hated the controls and posted a thread warning others to stay away from the game because it sucked. Now where is the sense in that?
Get this through to your head.
If your game isn't a pile of shit and truly deserves praise, the positive posts will always outnumber the negative posts by a large margin, on ANY credible, moderated forum.
I doubt thats true, problem is we'll never know. WoW made the mmo market 1000x larger and now if you take a sampling of 500 mmo fans and ask what they want in an mmo you'll get 500 different answers. So every mmo that comes out will get bashed just like this one, no matter how good it is.
All the mmos listed to the left on this site must be crap, because all these forums are full of negative posts. Its happened to every mmo launch ive seen since wow: vanguard, TR, AoC, and it will happen to WAR. Alot of people will try it then leave in great numbers, posting whatever it is they dont like on the forums. Feel free to quote me after you've given WAR the same amount of time youve given AoC.
And no matter how good a game is, you arent going to get alot of people to stick thier necks out and say so, the people enjoying it dont bother posting. Its all the people who hate it and want to stop people from playing it that make the most noise.

One of the two will happen... and if the S happen... any of the two will bring anything down.... Good luck if you try to develop a stunning mmo... with ut stomping anyone of the craps!

If a game is good and has a decent fan base you will still see negative threads this is true. But the original poster is trying to say the forums is what destroyed this game. I have been a member on these forums for a few years now and look at them everyday for the games I play. I have never seen such an out cry by consumers of the industry to boycott a game like they have with AOC.
We have Failcom avatars being passed around like a banner for a rebel uprising and people altering youtube videos trashing the company for Christ sakes. This does not happen to every game as the OP alluded to.
The game is a complete POS and for anyone to try and defend it or the company by blaming the forums is nothing more than a short bus seat warmer.
if by forums, you meant something like, "irl friends and multi-game-guild-mates who played aoc said it blows post 50 because there's nothing to do"; then yeah, sounds like "forums" destroyed this game.
could we please get correspondent writers and moderators, on the eve forum at mmorpg.com, who are well-versed on eve-online and aren't just passersby pushing buttons? pretty please?
Funcom destroyed AoC on their own. They've succeeded in making the game worse than it was at launch.
One phenomon that's worth looking at is Vanguard. They earned their bad press at launch. However, unlike Funcom, SOE has earned a lot of people's respect to the point where word of mouth is bring people back to Vanguard and new people looking to escape AoC and WoW. That speaks volumes for the work they've done to make the game better than it was at launch.
no one destroyed this game but funcom, aoc was an epic fail before it was released, funcom knew it, and we didnt, lets see what was the game before, and after the release, from a point of view of a fan who followed the game for years.
-->before the release :
1- 100% pvp oriented MMORPG
2- new combat system dynamic, 100% skill based, which means free combat choose when to dodge attack where to place attack, when you are skilled you win
3- amazing graphics, first mmorpg using directx 10
4- mature content, violent content
5- epic mass pvp with keeps and other stuff
this was what i was waiting for from the game infos i had.
-->after release :
1- no pvp system, just FFA, i dont know if you actualy understand the gravity of this, but few weeks before the release, they decided that their pvp system sucked ass, so they had to remove and work on a complete new system, knowing the game is sold to be a pvp game will be released without it.
2- combat system, isnt dynamic at all, you slide while you are fighting, ppl instead of jumping like on a fps they run around you, your combo hit target 20feet from you as long as you land the first part of the combo(they maybe changed this after a patch i heard), skill based become macro keyboard based, if you have G15 or nostromo you will win most of the time,+ one shot ppl isnt what i call skill based, the shield system just suck ass you just put 1 on top and 2on the left, is the best set you can make making this feature useless.
3- graphic are good, if we forget the 3-5 secondes of the ugly texture forming every port or respawn, no directx10 yet, graphic engine is so fucked up it's impossible to make it run correctly on massive fights, youcant custumize the graphic for better fps, you just put max and play, who give a shit about fps when you are pvping, and using combo that you miss becuz of lags, instead of enjoying the ffa it became frustrating between lags, freezes, and yea instance crash like 10 a day + memory leak crash another 10
4- mature content, censorship? no nipple no real nudity, no bitches no sex we are way far from "the witcher" , violent ok , fatality arnt new, i already played an aborted mmo a year before aoc and it had fatality called Gods and Heroes
5- epic keeps, are fully buged, then they are way too far from epic, 24v24, or 48v48 not that many ppl, plus it's so damn boring, you spend 50% of the time hiting buildings, 30% of the time running back from rez or camps, and 20% pvp, and i found it really really boring, minigames....battle ground i did 5 and i was done even more boring than keeps, even if you wanna do it for your guild.
this was my anticipation and my finding, then the game was just way too much buged, i did mny mmo releases, i know the games arnt always ready, but there is a limit, some bugs hit the gameplay way too hard, that ruins the fun, and those bugs shouldnt be at the release and most importantly not after 2 months of the release, patch fix crap bugs and creat bigest bugs, not once not twice, i think every single patch made the crap more crapier.
i dont hate the game, i was just disapointed, i was looking for something and i had something else i didnt want, age of conan have a great univers, need alot of fixe to be fun, probleme is funcom, they new what the game was like before the release, they new it wasnt ready, they decided to release it anyway without open beta, to limit the impact on sells, it worked the game was well sold, now it's dead not becuz of the forum but becuz the game is crap and need one more year of work from funcom if they can keep it up for a year, or sell it to another company, more talented or with more resources to finish the job.
anyway in my opinion, funcom wil not be able to pull it off with aoc, it needs investment in long term doubt they have the money for it, for a long term, and doubt they can find someone who will put money on it, cuz it's too risky.
It's like going to the movies. If you read reviews that say a particular movie is not worth seeing, you don't feel compelled to go. I never did buy AoC because I figgured I'd wait and see what people think of it or until there's a free trial. Guess what? I saved 50 smackers.
Yes you did. Are you also acknowledging that you let other people decide for you, for what what you think and enjoys?
You only go to movies that other people says are good.
You would not know if you like it until you seen it.
You only buy games that other people says are good.
You would not know if you liked it until you played it.
And with not trying anything out that people say to you that you don't like, you considered yourself to have saved money. Does that mean or incline that those times you spent money on things people telling you that are good never been a waste of money because you have always liked what other people told you to like.
Or do you understand that even if someone tells you something is bad you may end up likeing it and regardless of the review you always take a chance of loosing money on soemthing you don't like.
I would rather want to know why you are saying that AoC is destroyed.
There are a shitload of people putting it down. You can see rants about it everywhere.
People are still playing it, people are still buying it and people are still enjoying it.
Come back in one year and see if the things people whines about, the whinage that have grounds to it, still are there. And see what the state of the game is by then. Have Funcom fixed the game to what they intendet it to be by then. It is up to Funcom to make what they feel their game is to be and it is up to the players to decide if they like it or not.
If Funcom would have closed the servers now, you could say that the game was destroyed.
You are from what I can see trying to say that the massive negative posts about AoC destroyed the game is not good. And as you now confirms the game to be destroyed is really not any good then either.
All I can say is that I still find it amusing to think about all those people saying that AoC would be the best game, no flaws, no bugs. It would just simple be the best par none.
The same thing happened to AO i know because i played it.
It was released way to early and they worked on it.A year later AO was game of the year.A year after that AO's 1st expansion got expansion of the year.
What gets me is all the people that want to see FC and AoC go down in flames. This doesnt help anyone. The gamers who are actually playing AoC suffer for it FC suffers for it and the genre suffers for it.

Think about it?
I'm so broke. I can't even pay attention.

Thibk about THAT in your pipe and smoke it!!

If there were no forums, people would cancel subscriptions anyway. And don't forget, this is not the first game Failcom releases.
