Star Wars Galaxies to get vehicle combat

Christopher Field, producer of Sony Online Entertainment's Star Wars Galaxies MMO, has confirmed that vehicle combat is coming to the five-year-old game.
In a forum post Field - going by his online alias Dotanuki - said that vehicle combat will form part of the forthcoming Battle for Echo Base update.
Star Wars fans will know that Echo Base was the site of the famous Battle of Hoth sequence from the start of the Empire Strikes Back film, in which the Rebels' Snowspeeders take down Imperial AT-AT walkers. The scene's been recreated in videogames many times, but it's the kind of large-scale conflict that's been largely missing from Galaxies so far.
"The team has been working feverishly, reviewing the film every step of the way, to ensure as authentic experience as we can provide," said Field. "The environment is absolutely massive. The North Field alone is huge and will provide some exciting battle moments.The base itself is labyrinth of tunnels and rooms."
More information will be revealed at SOE's Fan Faire convention in Las Vegas in a week's time. "I was going to announce vehicle combat at Fan Faire, but it seems that that secret was too good to keep under wraps," said Field, perhaps referring to his boss John Smedley's slip of the tongue when talking to Massively at E3.
"Yes, we are including vehicle combat in The Battle of Echo Base. To find out what vehicles on Hoth are available for battle you'll need to attend the Galactic Assembly presentation at Fan Faire."
Field also mentioned some of the loot types being introduced with the Star Wars Galaxies Trading Card Game, Champions of the Force, and new interactive seasonal events, including one inspired by the infamous Star Wars Holiday Special.
Eurogamer MMO will be attending Fan Faire, so watch out for more information on Galaxies and the rest of SOE's bulging catalogue of MMOs around the 14th to the 17th August. ENDQUOTE.
the 14th to the 17th? That is when I predicted the server shutdown. It really seems like alot of work for a few players . If they can do this then why will SOE not merger the Servers - on the Kauri server My vehicle better be equip with a hyperspace loop so I could at least attack myself -ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ.

Too bad they couldn't do that when there were actually alot of players.

I don't know if it was divine intervention or the kinship of all living things, but I tell you, Jerry, at that moment ... I was a marine biologist.

SOE has not offered classics or rolled back in its moment just cause of PROUD.

People then try EQ2 and find that it IS a much better game, so they start playing that one.
It might be worth keeping afloat for that reason alone. Plus they actualy soend so little on it, it might just clear a small profit.

you know, I have the same feeling with SWG than I had with Friday 13th films; at the end of each film Jason always died but suddenly body was gone and we got another film LOL
This really isn't that bad a strategy from SOE's perspective.

The entire station pass system plays to this strategy.

No, it's not normal. In fact, it surprises me that people continue to do it, since you'd think that constantly saying "THIS IS IT! THREE MONTHS TO SHUTDOWN!" for three years would pretty much nuke anyone's credibility straight to hell.
Not here, though. Here, such klaxon-like alarm is embraced, even celebrated, since the blind hatred of the game and the lack of respect for those that still play it trump any sense of self-restraint. And, eventually, when the gates do close, Jestor and his "Love that Jestor" sycophants will say "See! Just as Jestor predicted!" -- completely ignoring the fact that he's been dead wrong for three years and will continue to be dead wrong until the day that, by complete coincidence, he happens to be right.

I'd just like to know why you wish it would shutdown? I hate a lot of games on the market , But It doesn't bother me they exist . I just feel that sort of outlook is exactly how SOE approached our player base , They loathed the fact we were enjoying what they had at the time , it wasn't making them the blizzard killer they wanted to be .I am not trying to knock on your opinion , i just wonder what the motivation behind it is. SWG was somewhat successful. It was cancelled and shut down. Players were migrated to SW:NGE. If SWG, which had some measure of success, was cancelled and killed dead, why wouldn't SOE kill off SW:NGE, which is much less successful?
EQ was launched 3/16/99. EQ2 was launched 11/08/04. That's about a 5 year and 8 month gap. EQ was doing way better than SW:NGE is now, when EQ2 was launched. SWG is over 5 years old. Where is SWG2? It should already be in beta. Yet we hear nothing not even rumors not a peep. With SWG2 SOE could make a huge marketing blitz that they've "listened to the players" and try to woo the fans. They could turn the page if they played it right. The fact that SWG2 doesn't exist lets us know SW:NGE's days are numbered, especially now that we know SW:TOR is coming out instead of SWG2. SW:NGE has no expansions for a reason.

However, SWG has been on its last 100 days for the past THREE YEARS, if you listen to the people in this forum. And every time it gets past the "predicted" date, all that comes are excuses and justifications, 99% of which are utter horseshit. Add that to the ridiculously lowballed subscription estimates that people like our esteemed Mr. Rodo and others chuck out there, and the credibility of the anti-SWG brigade should be zero -- except that nobody else on this board cares. Nah I think it's purely because enough people are now ready for a new Star Wars mmo that doesn't stink. It's a common theory that there can only ever be one Star Wars mmo at any given time due to exclusivity clauses. The rumours are born purely out of peoples desire to see a new Star Wars mmo that appeals to them. While I find the "my source" bullshit unbelievably funny to read I can still see that there's the best of intentions behind them which ultimately lie in the desire to see a new Star Wars mmo that isn't tarnished in anyway by the hand of SOE.

The problem with that theory is that SWG is no longer in box/CD production. It has been almost two years since a boxed version of the game was produced for retail (the 'Complete' collection). There is a trial version of the game in the Best of Star Wars box ('Five of the best Star Wars games! Oh, and a trial of SWG too...' It really does say basically that on the back of the box), but LEC wasn't even able to sell the 50K run of the Complete box, so they obviously feel the game has no retail value.
