I got into playing the closed beta. If God & Heroes was already at that stage, things were already advanced. But Perpetual couldn't hold up to its name and came to a halt.
Now my question (my puzzlement, should I say) is: How can a company create a MMORPG that reached the point of going into closed beta, and then simply put it on indefinite hold and shove it in the back of a drawer? I mean, it's been a while now (more than 6 months?) and I read nothing on Perpetual negotiating the code to pass it over to another publisher/developer that could get the game going again, and thus returning some of the money invested in the development of Gods & Heroes.
Now, whatever was coded for Star Trek Online seems to have been passed to Cryptic. What about Gods & Heroes? I ask again, does anybody know?

There are quite a few things that would make a game company do that.
1. Not having the money to finish the game.
2. Core game mechanics not working correctly and not having the technology or "know how" to fix them.
3. Another company buying you out and not wanting to spend the money on the game.
There are probably a few more things that could happen to cause something like that, but I can't think of any more off the top of my head.

If i remember correctly Perpetual canned G&H to work exclusively on Star Trek Online at least that the message I got when Beta was closed, then they lost Star Trek Online cause they apparently were a bunch of asshats..

If you were in the core tester beta then you should know the game was less than impressive. It had very little hype. They saw what kind of competition they would have to go up against, found their bags of gold missing from their vault and decided to scrap a game that was going to be average at best. If you followed the development before the close, even months before there was a clear sign things were going bad for them, a huge round of layoffs lol.
STO is gonna be crap too, Perpetual needs to stay the hell away from making games.
Now that PE/P2 is defunct, and their crew spread to the four winds, we don't have to worry about their incompetence or their idiocy ( both of these comments aimed mostly as Darron Stinett ) screwing up the Star Trek mmorpg. And since there is no more ST:O ( as I'm sure the new devs will change the moniker and the game both to separate their game from PEs' foul stench ), we can't say Star Trek will be crap now, as until the new devs formally announce it, there is no game to even discuss, for good or bad.
It was pretty awful anyway, to be honest.
For a programmer... theres problems, legacy code, code written for other people can feel like a "mess". Google for "No invented here".
For a suit guy.. theres problems, because developping the game is just a part of it. If you have to buy servers, buy adwords, banners and stuff, you need that your game could return the inversion. If the game don't feel that good, maybe is cheaper to have it on closed box.
So yes, made sense.
Thanks, Teiman, for providing some answer to the opener post.
It's too bad. From the previews on the site, the game had potential and was on my watch list. Maybe someone will steal their ideas and make something similar, only make it well this time.
xx even something as simple as staying logged in for more than 5 minutes became an impossible task due to their coding problems. And their coding really was suspect at times, such as having to place big blue giants to click on in order to zone into cities because they couldn't fix the game to zone seamlessly after one of their patches.

I take it by quoting my words, you agree with me?
seeing this topic made me laugh i was clearing out my email the other day and found my acceptance email into the G&H beta i almost felt bad i had some good hopes for this game..loved their ideas and remember seeing it working and running and Comic Con (San Diego) last year and talking with the guys about it.
I was a tester, the game was fun, IMHO, if you could play it that is.
I was quite dissapointed when it got canned.
I am almost 100% its not coming back, Perpetual isn't that great of a commpany in my honest opinion.
Shit hit the fan and they backed out.
Was looking forward to this game, seriously. It looked a little choppy but come on, who doesn't love Rome? They ruled the world. They were ruthless against their enemies but also merciful to their conquered. Maybe if a better company can make a Rome mythical MMO...I'd play it.

A human and an Elf get captured by Skaven. The rat-men are getting ready to shoot the first hostage with Dwarf-made guns when he yells, "Earthquake!" The naturally nervous Skaven run and hide from the imaginary threat. He escapes. The Skaven regroup and bring out the Elf. Being very smart, the Elf has figured out what to do. When the Skaven get ready to shoot, the Elf, in order to scare them, yells, "Fire!"

We've seen MMORPGs go through closed beta, open beta and go GOLD when they *should* have been canned, put on indefinite hold and thrown out an airlock into deep space into the fiery heart of a nova.
This was an instance where a developer realized what was happening (for any of the hundreds of reasons that cause other MMORPGs to fail) and actually called a stop to it.
I suppose I can understand your puzzlement. If Gods and Heroes had been a traditional MMORPG fthey would have kept going and put out a buggy piece of trash and let their subscibers pay to beta test it. It's a different market for MMORPGs now, that kind of tactic won't work anymore.
Perpetual isn't any kind of company anymore. Dead, done, finito, finished, closed, deceased, out-of-business.
Any company could come up with a Rome-based game.
I was hoping AoC would be the kind of thing Rome-based, and it is, around that era anyway, the armor looks Roman-esque. But the gameplay for me just bored the hell out of me.
I'm giving AoC some time.
If that fails, I wonder if another company will come along and make a Rome-type game, I'd be happy if even Blizzard made it and all the reptetiveness, so long as it's fun and I get a hit out of it.
Until then, just waiting...
AoC around Rome era eh ?
AoC around Rome era eh ?
Can be played that way. Tarantia is like a roman city, and people look roman. Cimmerria can be the barbarian tribes on the north. Zelata can be france. etc.. Even If that is suppose a 10k ago era, can be played in a differente way. Anyway, you will still kill giant spiders an trollish monsters.

I wouldn't force a death row inmate to play that game, much less recommend it to anyone.
After playing Age of Conan, i miss Gods and Heroes. Gods and Heroes was a mess server wise, but had some good things about it. I think if tweaked more the combat would be mroe engaging then what is present in Age of Conan. They had all stats working, heh. And they also had a decent armor setup. But the thing I liked most about Gods and Heroes is the hidden things. From the very get go, they had hidden quests and area's you could explore. Something that I think Age of Conan is missing in spades, is exactly that. EXPLORATION!! I also liked the fact that mobs could own you right back. Yeah released as is, it wouldnt of been anything fantastic. But after playing Age of Conan, that would of been the game I would of fell back on. And yes Zorvan, I know you love me! No need to reply, sweety! :P
Hidden quests sound great but once a few people do them they aren't hidden anymore.
