SoR ... opinions?

I was in the last week and a half of the open beta for Saga of Ryzom.

It was just released in the US on the  Sept. 21st for retail.

Although I found it a little simplistic, I also found it refreshing and fun.  For how long?  I really don't know.  Maybe one of those games you toy with for a few months and tire of,  maybe not.

The races atm ... easy, only 4 choices, a number of ways to customize your character from hair style/color, facial features and body features, big or small bicepts, legs, bust, fat or thin body.  Classes? again you start out with 4 that you can choose to excel at 1 or 2 and tinker in the others, or try to excel at all (which takes a longer time to progress of course)

Class break down -

lvl 1-20                              lvl 21 and up?

Fighter            -                Melee,  Ranged

Magic              -               Defensive , Offensive

Crafter            -              Armor, melee weapons, ranged, jewelry (cant remember possibly ammo)

Harvester        -              Forester (may have at one time also included the prospecting aspect as seperate but was combined in the experience when I tested and each time exp gained said so and put as new)

Crafting, recipes where part of the Pattern you bought with crafting points and the components either harvested or hunted down on mobs, some of the average stuff could be purchased from venders, but higher quality found by players. (I found the crafting system enjoyable, experience with each success and can purchase upgrades to abilities when acrued enough lvl'n points, nothing mor pleasing than to be able to provide good crafted armor to your group image, I generally hate crafting,  wouldnt touch it in EQlive, think my highest ability there was my wiz with a 139 in research, then my Beastlord with a 98 in baking and ranger with a 95 in fletching)

Guild structure  ...

Easy to start, find the appropriate NPC and start one.  Once started recruit, make officers, set banker (who can make deposits and withdraws, can set as many to se the guild treasury and deposit what not)

Guild missions and quests to gain fame (faction) to earn a guild house, venders, specialty trainers and at some point take over a outpost (village/town)

2 ways to gain this outpost,  by gaining enough fame (quests) and go into negotiations with one of the towns NPC's (which can be done with more than 1 guild after the town, the one with the most fame will win) or by force, declaring war with a particular NPC and killing the guards and captian, which will drive the locals out but leave you with attempts by the NPC's to take it back.

PvP?  Not sure of to what extent, I did see player duels going on but never tried myself, so do not know if any exp loss or gain from it  other than seeing if you can defeat an oponant.

The game (although I haven't vitness'd it myself) can have wars of hundreds of npc's attacking (yet to be proved)

Mobs for a number of different lvl's.  The last night of the beta, myself a lvl 43 melee fighter (22 ranged) 29 offensive magic and 27 defensive magic caster, a 40 melee 29 ranged fighter, a 35 melee 32ish magic (def and Off) decided to go all out and try a new section,  last night, why not? In we go, down we go with in seconds. It became just a challange to see how far (deep) we could run into the area before being slaughtered.

Death  ... stay and hope a person can heal you back to life within 3 mins of die'n or choice a respawn point (if you have been to more than one town)  respawn with all your good but a exp penalty that needs to be paid back before you can gain exp again ( can be paid back by any of the ways to gain exp, crafting, harvesting, magic or fighting,  penalty becomes bigger taking alot more to pay back as your lvl's increase)

All in all say out of a 5 star rating from my very short beta test experiance I would give it a 3.  Would need to see/experience more of the guild and war funtionalty to give it a true rating to me. Right now,  looking to see what EQ2 has to offer and this game is my backup from EQLive burnout

Any one else try it?  Have opinions on it?

I too played Saga of Ryzom... But back in first Open Beta stage....
I found it quite enjoyable and I liked the Guild system although I had never been able to test it fully with the Guild wars and fame and all... But it was funn...

Crafting... to me was a pain.... Maybe I was an isolated incident but To me crafting just wasn't worth it...
<<<<AND I REPEAT: MY RYZOM EXPERIENCE IS FROM THE FIRST OPEN BETA>>>>
I would buy like the raw materials which would cost me.... maybe 100 for one cheap low level raw material and i would need some thing like 5 to make lets say shoes... And then after i make my shoes.. The shoes are worth less than those five pieces of raw material i used to make it with... And this was with like lvl 5 raw materials... But higher lvl materials were wayy more expensive... So In my playing time Crafting was a sink hole for money... BUt i repeat... I pleyed it during first beta.... do not judge the game from what i say...

PvP is consensual dualing.... and later on it changed so you could fight multiple people at once... But it got boring really quickly... So much to the point where the fad that started spreading across Atis was dualing Bareknuckled.... Put up your dukes and see who's the first one to fall... OFcourse when someone started loosing they would resort to their magic... cuz magic was uber at the time....

But definately for me the funnest thing to do in SoR was explore.. Just like you said
"The last night of the beta, myself a lvl 43 melee fighter (22 ranged) 29 offensive magic and 27 defensive magic caster, a 40 melee 29 ranged fighter, a 35 melee 32ish magic (def and Off) decided to go all out and try a new section, last night, why not? In we go, down we go with in seconds. It became just a challange to see how far (deep) we could run into the area before being slaughtered."

This was what it was all about... Me and my party would start in Pyr... and see if we can make it all the way to Prime Roots above Dyron... It was Funn as heck.. Trying to sneak past frazhars?? and hmm i forgot the names.. But neverthe less it was great... Just exploring the map trying to collect as many spawn points as possible... :P I really wanna play the game.. now that it's out.. But I'm gonna hope for a free trail before i actually start... cuz... hmmm is it really worth the money??

    It sounds great IMO

In this game some mobs gather and make raids to towns and outposts..............thats what ive been waiting for 3 years.

BTW.....the RP factor seems strong in SoR, maybe this game will put the "RP" in the "MMORPG"

From the small amount that I was able to play due to my work schedule, it was the most realistic game that I've played in a while. It was definetly refreshing like you mentioned from all the other games. In this game, I don't feel like I HAVE to level up to still have fun. Since you can try and do everything in the game, you don't grind and grind unless you just have the urge to be high level. It was great to be invited into a group, but being a warrior character, I didn't have much healing ability. Neither did anyone in the group, so instead of kicking one and waiting for a healer, we just decided that several of us would heal instead of fighting, and it was totally awesome! image

Just waiting on my copy. <twiddles thumbs>

No PvP except for duels...And since most types can one-shot others that wasn't even much fun.

No traveling to other lands until you were level 200+, then it becomes a 20 hour trip the first time.

Small population numbers. Free open beta and there were mabey 200 people playing.

Only one race..Even horizons had 2. Oh there are diffrent 'races' but the only thing that's diffrent about them is their skin color.

Not much grouping incentive...Since you can solo for max exp after level 50 or so adding people to your group just brings your exp down.

No place for healers...Cheap self-heals heal for 10-20X as much as the heal-other spells that cost much more...So everyone just uses the self-heals.

Crafting was one huge grind. Grind out 2-3 hours on crafting(after you spend 2-3 hours killing for materials) to gain a level and nobody wanted what you produced unless you were a max crafter with all the best skills and crafting additions + you had several harvesters supplying you with the best materials.

No adventurer loot drops...Crafting componets only. Even then only useful for leveling or trash temporary items.

Everyone does everything. Since you can max out all 4 schools you had better do it or you'd be a gimp compared to someone who say...bought hit points with their crafting skill points.

Very poor documentation on the skills and no way to respec. You make a mistake in your skill choices and you pretty much lost them until you max out and have everything anyway, did I mention that it's a guessing game as to what skills do unless you look out-of-game for an explanation?

Many useless skills...Skills that are either worse to use than not to use or that you can't even tell you have them.

No diffrent skills..You'll get a 'new' ability every 100 levels but between those levels you just get Slow +0.5 then Slow +0.6 then slow +0.7......

all in all a very poor game...Sure is pretty though:)

Heh, I can't speak for Zira there, but I see those things as different, but not bad. Personally, I think that proves that this game may actually be what all the hype is about. I just noticed that it was released, so I'm sure we'll start getting reviews in here, and from what XZira says, I think they will be very interesting.

In conclusion, I wasn't paying any attention to it before, but it seems that it might be worth looking into now image

Anyone in NA able to get in yet? I wanted to know how things are going, but I don't see any posts from people that are already playing.

Think they are all still playing, or are people still having problems with the distributor?

    I'm really confused image

Personally I am putting alot of faith into the hype that the devs say CAN be this game. I preordered a month ago or so and have become one of many to see some major distribution issues. Apparently the North American server has been up and waiting for us capitalist pigs to join in yet so many people cannot get their hands on a game CD. My pre-order has been in a state of "processing" for 2 days now and no word on when and if I will EVER get it ::::37::

When I do get in game and start to experience the "non-beta". I will be sure to throw you guys a bone though. So many people have cried about lack of adventure and so forth in this title, but the devs stated from the get go of beta that NONE of it will be in place during the beta to save the meat for release. So needless to say, I liked the overall play of the beta, now I wanna experience what is RYZOM!

I played in the open beta for this game as well, and what I can say is that the game certainly wasn't bad.  It seemed to have a slightly more fresh, open-ended approach toward leveling, and the AI was nice (creatures moving in heards, monster raids on towns).

Unfortunately there were a lot of issues with the open beta as well.  There was no pathfinding for your character, there were graphical bugs, and problems with the game physics.   The lag in towns was unbearable.

Supposedly a lot has changed since the beta release, according to the reviews in the "Top Rated MMORPG's" in the main section of this site.  I think the company would have done well to offer testers of the open beta a week or two free play when the final game was released, because many of the beta testers like myself are a little unsure of what this game is like now it is released, and don't really want to spend the money to find out that it hasn't changed at all.  For people like us, we sit and wait for reviews to come in, and then maybe we buy the game, or maybe we're scared off; or just not willing to try it.

I am looking forward to seeing opinions from people who have played the pricey version of this game!

As I saw it, the original release date for N. America was for Sept 20th. The server I believe went live yesterday , the 21st. Then after my pre order,  maybe 2-3 days I received an email that it was not being shipped until the 23rd.

I checked my order last night with EBGames and it was shipped to me 2 day fed ex so will have it tomorrow.

I think it will be interesting to explore the changes and such  .. and gives me something to do until I can get either a beta peek at EQ2 or try the game out myself live.  EQLive,  as much as I have enjoyed it the last 4  plus years is getting stale, and the endless time LFG as a 66 wizard or 65 berserker when there isn't a guild raid going on  .... boring as all hell.
