WOTLK (beta) - My first day in a new land

coffeecoffee Member Posts: 2,007

I was lucky enough to get an invite into the WOTLK beta today and after several hours of downloading and patching I got to play.

I copied my lvl 70 T4 gear hunter to "coldra" the beta PvE server (there is no PvP server). After about an hour spec'ing and respec'ing I decided to stick with my mostly MM build, untill I have time to go to ungoro and get me a devilsaur.

Day : 1

I decided to take a boat from the new Stormwind harbor and start my adventure on the West side of northrend, I arrived in an besiged settlement called "Valiance Keep" on the coast of the Borean tundra.

Impressive? and back to old skool WoW. love it.

One of my first quests after running around Valiance keep looking for the various vender and so forth was to help kill some of nebreun (those flying bat things) who were attacking the Keep. I was given a net that I had to throw over one these beasties and bring them to the ground for a good old fasioned beating.
I decided to go for quick look around, Just over the cliffs in the distance I could see the horde stronghold. I did a few more quests in the area, scouting a mine, buring some buildings.

I decided to take a closer look at the horde stronghold.. this is as close as I dared get.  That floating thing in the background spawned about 50 mobs so I run like a little girl.  the shadows it caste was darn good though.

I am loving the gfx improvments in wotlk.

So What loot did I get in my few hours in the Wotlk beta? As a Tier 4 geared hunter with Season 2 PvP epix to fill in the blanks none of this loot was more powerful than I already had. So all you T5/6 guys dont worry your effort is not gone to waste.

I only got to play around 4 hours and explored all of about 10% of one zone in northrend, but It feels great, visualy its better than TBC and ofc it feel more like WoW as its not on a strange alien planet.

Haste rating on Green Gear! Awesome, :)

Weird how they have no Euro pvp server.  Theres a pve and pvp server in NA.

Is a man not entitled to the herp of his derp?

Remember, I live in a world where juggalos and yugioh players are real things.

Theres haste rating on a lot of gear in the stating area.  Since it applies to both melee and spell haste its doubly nice for hybrid classes like paladins and shamans.

I really hate this game for all the reasons anyone who's been playing since day one would. It's tired grind heavy class unbalances blah blah. The only problem with the WotLK is that they are doing everything I thought they should have done in TBC in that this is a high fantasy genre and not Star Gate Worlds.

Let me say that the last year and change have been frustrating with this game as I play a druid who is not resto and therefore get a large tri colored rubber cock award in pve and pvp for the most part. I hate the lies they spit at me about my spec being 'competitive with the rest of the spec' which is a sure fire way to ensue the wrath of God on their lying forms. The nerfs made a few months after release are being undone now which goes to show that they were in fact over doing it despite them telling the whole of the druid community to stfu and go spec resto damn it. Leave the dps and likewise cool raiding spots of shamans. However with all the changes that represent many years of "I told you so" this xpac looks more appealing despite seige looking like a sweaty heap of manmuck. It's graphic update is years overdue and the class mechanics even longer but since it's being changed now I suppose it will make up for it despite them taxing my already pissy  wallet.

    Clever things.

I also have a feral druid main, and i disagree with you almost completely in any regard but arena.

Since you didn't state that you ment balance in arena specifically, i assume you didn't mean it in that way.

Thus why I said' for the most part'. Druid tanks are find but the scaling on cat is shat and anyone who disagrees needs to go back to high school statistics class or maybe just pull the McDonalds grease out of their face and watch the numbers not change ever. Balance is just plain undesirable for pve and most guilds dismiss them leading to your pvp sessions of frustration as you cannot kill anything respectably geared that can heal which includes warlocks.

However this isn't about Druids who are pretty much replaced at current with the Godly antics of Death Knights on the horrizen but about the overall package. I kid kinda about the Death Knight bit. The graphics and shadows as of right now look like a panty dropping sensation compared to its current state which while isnt saying much is still better than doing nothing at all. The style is back to the gritty Azeroth of timber and death as opposed to the spacey laser age with floating shiny God things that no matter how hard to wack them candy never come out. In terse its a desireable upgrade and the changes are going to be well recieved for the most part since now I don't have to wait 20 minutes when someone dies to tell them they are out of luck. I probably wont rez them anway.

    Clever things.

The level 71-74 solo quest rewards won't be better than your T5-T6, but bet your ass the level 75+ solo quest rewards will be.  Everyone starts over, which IMO sucks and effectively shrinks the game instead of expanding it.

i must say i disagree.  The fact that everything starts over is great, because it puts everyone back on equal terms.  I didnt get to endgame level 70 to well after most people, so catching up was tough, however now i have kind of hit a glass ceiling in that i am permanently stuck about 1 "level" of gear behind many people.  With the xpac, ill have the opportunity to be right back in the thick of things.  My friends in "uber-guilds" love it just as much as i do, because it gives them a chance to get back to a large scale race to the top

This is a very old argument (against TBC) these days ...and no longer applies to WotLK.

Everyone who plays WOW these days knows that every 6 months gear gets updated (through new dungeons, BG's, Arena seasons, and craftin professions).

So the Wow players now are used to get new gear and they mostly love it (looking at the amount of players that come back every time a new season opens). It keeps the game fresh and every new player can "catch up" rather easely.

The argument you use .... was the moaning of the old raiders in Old Wow of 2 years ago.

In fact comparing to now I found the old Wow game back then extrememly boring and one sided: only the hardcore raiders could get any decent epic gear (and of course those doing 12 hour/day BG's).

Present day players know Wow no longer needs to bash mindlessly monsters to advance their gear and so their character.

As a matter of fact: the players not bored by playing it for years are looking forward to new upward gear every 6 months now. So the expansion is far more welcomed in this respect than TBC was.

Better (re)play the game actively ....before you comment ;.... :)))) on old mechanics.

The ironic thing about this is there are a bunch of raiders (t6) on the official beta forums complaining that 70-74 dungeons, and quests are too easy and offer no gear upgrades.

So for every person saying "omg, my gear is getting outdated when I hit 75", there is another player saying " omg..everything is so easy in my leet gear".

Blizzard is making a good choice.... 5 levels of fast leveling, but no upgrades is balanced

Nice write up, thanks for sharing! Looking forward to the expansion myself, thanks for the pics.

Out of every 100 men, 10 should not be there,
80 are nothing but targets, 9 are the real fighters.
Ah, but one, ONE of them is a warrior,
and he will bring the others home.

Nah I just keep them short anymore, get tired of all the bashers always looking for something to whine about. I used to enjoy the boards but lately I find myself not even wanting to look at them.

This is one aspect of this game that disgusts me.  Personally, I'm glad that gear gets reset.  The majority of people will get rewarded for doing quests/instances in wotlk.  I can't help the people who raid for obsolete gear.  But this truly is World of Gearcraft...so I guess I should get used to my disgust (thought I haven't played for a month).

You will still need to mindlessly bash monsters or other players to advance your gear whether it be through badges, reputation, arena or dungeons/raids.

Any upgrade is going to involve a massive grindfest.

Afraid that you have to live with it, all MMOs I ever played 'cept Guildwars (Which is a kind of hybrid between MMO and a a Diablo type of game) are all mainly gearbased. To bad, a nice game based on skills  as main would feel fresh, instead of raiding for gear you could raid for skills.

But we will see the usual whinning when players notice that their uber armour sucks at level 72...

THEY DO BG's, Arena's hi end Raids and buy/sell on the Auction House to craft.

Those that still talk of a grindfest in present day Wow don't even know the game anymore.

Stop that silly broken grindfest record,  because people these days have fun in different playing styles now. You play for fun AND get rewarded.

The hate boys just don't seem to realize that a game can't have 10.9 million active paid subscriptions while the competition dies at 200K.

It's simple : it is called FUN.

Cool! Vicksburg made a new account.

A human and an Elf get captured by Skaven. The rat-men are getting ready to shoot the first hostage with Dwarf-made guns when he yells, "Earthquake!" The naturally nervous Skaven run and hide from the imaginary threat. He escapes. The Skaven regroup and bring out the Elf. Being very smart, the Elf has figured out what to do. When the Skaven get ready to shoot, the Elf, in order to scare them, yells, "Fire!"

I'm really impressed with what they've done with the graphics.  I love the new real time shadows.  This game looks on par with WAR anymore.

I'm excited to try the new class out.  Keep us updated.
