well the solution is simple ..infinite lvleling...let players if they wish to advance in lvlsd as long as they can...
Watch though after for example 100 lvl in order to go 101 huge number xp will be needed and so on...+ that for example the game mechanics are such as that a player lvl 92 could beat aplayer lvl 107 ...meaning with this that each lvl would provide just some atributes and skills...that way none would be so loonatic to farm lvls..if u need 32 million xp for example to go from lvl 111-->112 lvl plus that they could imply a death penalty after lvl 100 for example so that technicallly u could have the chance if not dying oiften to lvl above the usual lvl cap of a game...
Mind that most mmos usually have a target goal for the player so when he reach the lvl cap he has some goals and he wont loose their intrests for the game... In wow for example the target is to reach the highest ranks in arena for pviers adn step through the most dificults raid dungeons in pve...
I f u could also have the chance to lvl above the cap if u are a skileld player then good for you.
Besides if u hypothetically think after 6 months on this game u would see : 2 players 112 lvl, 1 player 110 lvl 3 players 107 lvl .4 players 103 lvl e.t.c. and by seeing a player above the lvl cap u would know that he is a skilled and fearsome warrior that made it through perlis and death penaltis to that lvl..What a way to earn opponents respect in a game, no titles ,no baron, no king, just 112 lvl ;P

If it's infinite leveling, why have levels? You need a different way of increasing skills and attributes... oh wait!! That would be a skill based system...
well MDB1958 since many ppl complain that after lvl cap in many mmo's not much there to do u could also keep lvling by doing the usual daily quests daily raids and dungeons e.t.c. thats 1more thing in addition to some others ...continual impovement on your characters instead of expansions expansions that increase the lvl cap by 10 lvl..after few months u reach the capa nd get the gear game becomes kinda boring..
It worked in Asheron's Call level 210 after Throne of Destiny expansion and there was major fun factor in advancing to 210. I think they can go to level 300+ on AC and still would never get boring but I don't play anymore so I couldn't say for sure.
It all depends on the type of game really.

Such a game would make PvP impossible even if the extra levels are not as good as the normal ones. Every point counts. At some point level 105 will be needed to compete in PvP, half a year later it will be 110. You are effectively nerfing the earlier levels of a char.
Another thing would be that people would use bots to level up. Gathering a huge amount of XP via grinding the same monster in a certain area is a bad thing and will be done via automation.

Technically all MMO's have an infinite amount of levels for a character to do. Thats what expansions are for you know. Only mmo I can think off the top of my head that didnt raise the level cap is DAoC.
Infinite Leveling? No way!
A player usually needs a "goal" a certain achievement to strive for.
Having infinite levels would
1. Kill the fun really quick (especially when a lvl 92 beats up a lvl 107)
2. Make leveling absolutely pointless, since someone who plays more will always have an advantage over you.
3. There's no way to catch up. It would be one huge imbalance.
Ranks would be a better idea, we're going back to the player having a certain 'goal' instead of the mindless levelling and grinding.

Infinite levels would be nice. It extends the original gameplay instead of changing how the game plays once the level cap is reached. The level cap is often silly because people are either rushing through the levelling to get to the "other" part of the game, or get bored because the gameplay changes. Then there's all of the people that want to experience max-level content but don't have the patience to get there.
A key factor behind this kind of scheme though is that levels should not mean as much, so ultimately skill would matter more than levels, but levels would still give a nice sense of progression instead of playing a medieval style FPS.

Since I feel the idea of levels is a bad one, then of course I think the idea of infinite levels is even worse.
I'm tired of games that reward players simply because they have more free time than I do to mindlessly grind away these levels.
Tell you what, lets make a deal, you can have your infinite levels as long as I can pay a reasonable fee to just buy mine, perhaps in 10 level blocks. Why not reward me for having the cash to buy my way to the top? Makes perfect sense to me from my perspective.
I only play these games because in theory (reality is always different) even if someone can grind to the top much sooner than me, I will one day catch up to them and won't feel left behind. (they usually are still much richer/better geared then me, but I understand the need to provide the hardcore with some incentives to play so much)

Infinite levelling would be better than raiding any day or night.
Infinite leveling is, in my opinion, even worse than the gear grind solution used by most MMOs today. I don't get why people think it would be great to be able to watch their blue / purple / orange bar slowly tick up then have your number increase by one to just start the same process over again.
Infinite leveling will only work with a power plateau where leveling higher gives you no more advantages in combat.

Evasia and the Op, do you not see that this leveling system favours those with a maximum of free time or with bots? Do you really have 24 hours a day of free time to be able to keep up with those no lifes to be competitive ?
If you still want it, then please do not start to whine when a char that ist 20+ levels above you PKs you. Even if you know that that char was most likely bought via ebay from a power leveling service. I can assure you that in such a system even players that play 8 hours a day will be on the losing end.

Infinate leveling would be a bad idea. Anyone that spends hours a day on the game would be getting insanely high levels fast while you still aren't what was the max level cap. It would be completely unfair in pvp and that would get people fustrated and possibly quit the game.
It would almost be like a repeat of the South Park World of Warcraft episode in my opinion.
Whilst infinite levels would be technically, and even practically, ny impossible I think it's an interesting idea.
Personally I think it would better in a skill leveling based system right than an overall leveling system like WoW or EQ2.
For example: One could level her/his one handed sword skill indefinitely but with penalties on death or other failures once a cetain level has been reached (insert artificial number of 100 here). Making each level following that artificial number (100) exponentially difficult and lengthy.
This would almost create a "hero" class for characters willing to invest time, energy into those skills they wish to surpace all others in.
From a "balancing" point of view this sort of system would be hell'ish but still, it's an idea with legs IMO.
Important Information regarding Posting and You
I think you guys who say this are missing the point. A infinite level structure does not need to include more skills or stats after a certain level. So you cap the level where stats and skills improve to lets say 100 then after 100 to 200 level is all for prestige.
Adding infinite levels can be fun to those seeking to progress the levels without adding more skill or stats to each level after a certain level.

That makes kind of sense to me, but would you not be better off with an achievement system with titles and so forth, that contain really hard to get achievements? One could even add titles for having gained so and so much xp after hitting hte lvl cap. To me achievements and fluff sounds a lot more interesting than a number, I do see your point however.

skill based games aren't really any different than level based games. Your primary skill just basically becomes your level as long as you don't let secondary skills trail way behind. They generally put some sort of cap on the primary skill which is the same as a level cap more or less.
EQ sort of does this with AA, you keep gaining power the more you play even if you reach max level. I don't personally like it much because it makes it too hard to get into a game as a newer player.
Unlimited levels is an amazingly good system.
I am in favor of a level cap/gear cap based on each zone however. So a level 5 can be the king of the hill in the noob zone and no level 945045459 or a level 50 can come and just make fun of him there.
CoX already has the level cap system working in PvP zones, you just remove the leveling up for lowbies and applies 1 different cap for most zone. There is nothing fun to be level 50 in a level 3 zone, but there is definitely something fun in always gaining extra levels in the last zone!
You new expansions could be based on AAs, or ranks/side levels or whatever else, so you don't ruin the existing infinite level system.

The first mmorpg i ever played had infinite lvling in it.(Nexus, Kingdom of the Winds) It was an awesome game, mostly because it was community driven, but there was a few people on the server that could just completely decimate anyone else which was not cool, and the amount of time it would take to get to there lvl would take years.

No advantages over lower levels (should be obvious why) just maybe for aesthetic purposes.
This topic simply highlights the pointless futility of level based games. A good mmo will give players something meaningful to do in the gameworld that actually has an impact on everyone else and changes everyones gaming experience. As it stands now mmos dont let you do anything except go up levels which is why everyone is so obsessed with them.
EVE is the only game I have seen so far which breaks this mould. Sure I'm building up wealth and learning skills so I can get bigger and better ships so in a sense you could call that levelling but the difference is that "higher level" characters are not neccessarily going to beat "lower level" characters. Also I can do something meaningful in the game world no matter what ship I have.
skill-based games already do this so I'm kind of lost. In eVE, it would take what someone help me, 20 years to unlock all the skills? Go play EVE to see how well or bad it works
Also in Saga of Ryzom I highly doubt someone unlocked all the skills? I'm just guessing but 250 in every skill is hardcore kinda aint it?

Do you mean vertical leveling? Whereas levels grant ultimate power? NO!!!! Just my humble opinion. Is it like BF2142 where Levels merely unlock a new skill? Maybe I will play. Is it like a skill-based game designed so that all paths are viable?
I still think its a good idea. Well, its genius good and horrible bad at sametime. I would have to play it.
Off hand only bad I forsee (come on Force powers) is that it will make it tough to make alts. I kinda like the idea of skill caps. Allow me to dynamically make unique, player created Class. Heck, I am not adverse to just letting people unlock everything either.
But hard defined Traditional Levels I dont care for.
