One would assume any Star Trek MMO would perhaps contain the most mature community around. Certainly there arent very many teen trek fans. The movies didnt have cute little kids with toy marketing gimicks like a certain other sci-fi movie did.
The last television (Enterprise) ended in 2005. Based on the terrible ratings nobody really watched that show so I cant see it bringing in masses of teen fans to the genre.
The core fan base for Trek lore comes from the original series (and its reruns) and TNG. Shows later on like DS9 and Voyager merely reinforced existing fans love for all things Trek. These fans established themselves 20-40 years ago.
Therefore its reasonable to assume that the average Trek fan is between 35 and 55 years old. Median age being 45.
Ive been to several Trek conventions and there werent any teens around, mostly middle aged guys like myself.
So my question then is this....
where are all these bratty immature kids coming from on startrekonline.com ?
I recall the same kind of fanboism and horribly immature posters at the previous website sto.net as well. Clearly these posters are kids. So where is this love and passion for Trek coming from with this crowd ? Most of them werent even born when TNG came out.
Whats worse to me is its clear many of them have zero MMO experience as well. I played another MMO once that was awash in a sea of teen no-mmo experienced players....World of Warcraft. And that community and its players are the worst of any community ever. Pugs arent ever doable because the players lack basic mmo skills to play the game.
Look at the posters below. One topic I posted was immediately attacked. These kids despite the evidence still somehow believe a 2009 launch is possible lol. And they could care less about non-combat options apparently.

what kind of shity topic is this... Thats to early to predict... Not everyone who post on forum will buy the game... Im 23 years old, and i dont mind the fact kids want to play, I prefer to play with mature players... But why should i be so short minded - every one can play any game...
Thats my opinion...
And a very good opinion it is indeed! Initial forum communities are usually not a good indication of what an in-game community will be like in a game that is quite possible years from release. Also Star Trek is for all ages. Even my 11 year old boy watches Star Trek in it's various forms and loves it. Just because you don't see a lot of Star Trek kids at conventions doesn't mean they don't exist. I know I live with one of them.

Some of us dont want to play with kids. Especially with kids with no MMO experience.
I dont want to see Chuck Norris jokes spamming the trade channel
I dont want to spend 4 hrs on a quest because the other players in the group need to take a shower or Mom wants them to take the trash out or they wipe us because they lack skills...etc etc etc.
I love my son and his friends are great. Its fun to play xbox360 with them. But when it comes to MMO's, I want a decent community. Star Wars Galaxies for example had such a great community that many of us played that broken game just for the friends we made.
Out of curiosity, what got you interested in Star Trek ? Reruns, Enterprise, or maybe you have no interest but like sci-fi games ?
tbh, the fact that you felt the need to post all of this(and in doing so give publicity to those people) speaks volumes about your own maturity level. the only way to combat that kind of behavior is to ignore it/report it to the mods. publicising it as you have only makes it worse. and as far as the "goat thread" that you dont get, watch the vegas webcast.

what is he watching exactly ? There used to be some Voyager reruns about a year ago on my cable stations but I havent seen anything recently.
I think TNG used to be on Spike but its been a while since I seen one run.
My son likes Star Trek but thats because his Dad makes him watch the old movies.
I must say that in some part - I agree with you... But not totaly... Any one can play what he want (and with anyone), ill be happy to play with you STO (Im also Vet in SWG - quited, but playing again - and its not so bad), but we cant forbiden kids to play...
In some cases 13 years old kid - can own you and me together... But we will see... Im happy for STO, and i hope that would be decent game... With some mature players... Thats enough for me..
Im merely pointing out my concern for the potential community we might get in Trek.
I dont want to get stuck with a WoW community. The gameplay is decent but the community is so awful I had to quit. I know Im not alone on this. Entire guilds play bad MMO's like Age of Conan and Star Wars Galaxies just because the community is excellent at least.
Im also hoping there will be role-playing, something impossible with the younger crowd.
Then you want to stay as far away as possible from Star Trek Online. This game is going to attract more MMO novices than anything since WoW maybe. There are tons of Star Trek fans that don't even know MMOs exist that will be playing this game. If you're worried that another player's lack of MMO experience is going to ruin your immersion then you definitely don't want to play this game, period.

what good does worrying about something that you have absolutely no control over accomplish?

Hmm thats probably true. This game will bring in more new players to MMO's than vets Im guessing. However I also believe they'll be vets of rpg's and video games in general and will have the skills to pick up the gameplay style.
Star Wars Galaxies brought in a ton of new players to the genre. They quickly caught on and became very experienced players in a very complex MMO.
What Im worried about are the younger immature players with no experience. Im also worried about the CoH crowd which also frankly lacks any real MMO experience. Lets face it, CoH is a marginal MMO and about as complex as a paper towel.
I want a SWG community...maturity, vets of pc games, roleplayers, etc.
I dont want a WoW community...Chuck Norris jokes, cursing, crude jokes, and bad players.
That website concerns me...
Personally, I'm disgusted by the amount of crap on the official forums.
There seems to be no moderator presence.
I'm hoping this community is similar to the lotro one. Very few "face pwning" kids in lotro...and personally I like it that way.
Hold on I'll find you all a forum for aging grandmothers

I wouldn't worry too much about it now. Younger kids seems to have an attention span of.......... about that long. I know, I raised 5 of them. Youngest is now 28.
With a release date aways off, they'll head for warhammer or something else "shiney". Most of the kids like fantasy games too. We'll just have to see at launch.
I agree. LOTR has a wonderful community

Some of us dont want to play with kids. Especially with kids with no MMO experience. -
Then how would they ever learn to play. Teaching other people how to play is part of the MMO experience, its called mentoring. You should consider moving to a senior citizens community if you fear young people so much.
I dont want to see Chuck Norris jokes spamming the trade channel - You know, many of the people making those in WOW were 20-30.....chronological age does not begat maturity.
I dont want to spend 4 hrs on a quest because the other players in the group need to take a shower or Mom wants them to take the trash out or they wipe us because they lack skills...etc etc etc. Yes, yes, I've run into this on occasion in WOW, not a whole lot different than a parent who has to go tuck the kids into bed or feed them, or someone like me who draws wife aggro at odd times. Stuff happens, deal with it. Besides, your greater issue is the fact you are willing to spend 4 hours on a quest, but that's a topic for a different day.

I play EVE, and from a chronological standpoint we probably have one of the oldest populations out there, but trust me, we have more than our share of total arses.... and its not because of their youth.
Out of curiosity, what got you interested in Star Trek ? Reruns, Enterprise, or maybe you have no interest but like sci-fi games ? - Truthfully, I've been watching Star Trek since it was a new show in 1965/66, and you know what, its sort of a worn out, dead franchise in my eyes. It would be nice if young folks would show a bit of interest in playing the game, because you really don't want it full of people like me. (who can do a fine job of being an arse when called upon, I assure you)

yeah Ive done the mentoring thing.
It was fine in SWG. The average person I helped out was mature and had a burning desire to understand the complexity of the game. We established a mutually benficial relationship for years.
It wasnt so fine in WoW. I once recall trying to teach a really awful tank in our group how to play his class. He would run up to a group of 5 mobs and start working on a single mob. One other mob might stay on him but typically 3 others would leave and start smacking the clothies around one-shotting them. I merely suggested that he might want to start out with a consecrate to do some damage to all the mobs and therefore gain some threat aggro on them.
He screamed words i cant repeat at me for giving him advice. He said something like "you arent my Mom and cant tell him what to do". The kid then actually reported me for harrassment lol
Another time I recall we kept wiping because the tank didnt understand how to do a Line of sight pull. He wouldnt listen so I asked the mage to do a counterspell on the caster that wouldnt come to us. That caster would stay put and end up aggroing the pat. The mage basically refused and didnt want me giving him advice.
And it not like Im coming off as egotistical or pushy. Im polite and offer a suggestion after we've wiped 3 times and they dont seem to learn the mistake their making.
As far as playing 4 hrs in a dungeon I can only imagine where you'd take that. Needless to say, if you invet 2 hrs in a place you dont wanna give up without finishing. 2 turns into 3 hrs and again I dont wanna toss out that time with no reward by completing. Eventually though enough is enough
And I would be perfectly fine with an Eve type of community. Sure some adults check their morals and polite behavior at the firewall door but for the most part the community is mature.
If the community is anything close to WoW (and based on startekonline.com its very similiar) I dont see me playing. WoW is a pretty good game but the community makes it unplayable.

I think you need to get off the computer, sit on your porch with a blanket on your legs and yell at the neighbor kids to get off of your lawn. I really had no problems reading your rant ans seeing your point of view until you decided to attack another game. CoH is a good game for people new to the MMO world to play. I've played CoH for a few years, WoW for about a year, and done trials for EVE, D&DOnline, LOtRO, and three or four other free MMOs and you know what? Every game has the same community. It just depends on the size of the community whether you really notice it or not.
I see your point about your concern for a mature community. Seeing that little girl stand up and ask what ages could play sto on the webcast was kind of ya know, disturbing but not because a "youngin" wants to play the same mmo as us, but because someone that young is subjected to impatience, rudeness and the vulgarity that comes with our online communities. As parents you know children have spongelike minds(boy do they!) and they soak it up and reciprocate, they learn from what others do and give this right back. (Dont ever mumble the F word) lol "evAr!!z
Your speaking about a community problem, not a youth problem, while I do agree that we all strive for a better maturity lvl in our mmos, I'd say it starts within ourselves as elders both in our games and in life before we look at any age group because all age groups can act equally "shitty" and be "complete arses" coming from the first years of Ultima Online, You get to see it all. Guess what? Alot of it stemmed from that game and has grown to 9 sumodd million wow players. Its in every community, eve online, coh/cov, dare i even mention any korean mmo?
Im 31 years old, and grew up watching star trek with dad, some of my earliest memories were of that old enterprise, and while im not the "trekkie" some of you guys may be, I do enjoy even now watching any episode I can catch from the old days till today and seeing the kid ask kinda lit me up honestly, the guy who said its kind of a dead ip is correct, it kinda is. Let the kids play man, if you can put up with them at home a couple little goofy kids havin fun isnt gonna kill us,(hell ive come to the point where its just comedy) we were there once and they'll grow out of it with a little help. Hell I was surprised someone or ANYONE that age would even care to be curious about Star Trek, I was happy to see it.
Now if we could just convince a dev company to give us a Dune Mmo we would be in damn good shape
Yes, but only because you can't pwn face in Lotro. You have to choose to go to a dedicated area, and fight using a different character than in the real game. I don't want a gank fest either, but it should always be possible to attack someone who needs it. There just have to be risks and penalties.
You're preaching to the choir here. Oh my, this topic made me laugh out loud. This section has consistently been one of the most pissy, immature and trollish parts of the site since STO was announced.
