What is disappointing about WAR

EA/Mythic FAIL! Its baffling why a company like EA (who has their paw in everything now) method of DL'ing the files needed. total and utter fail. I literally LOL'd when I saw what it was.

Uhh you know beta's have almost always been torrents since torrents have been around?  Including WoW.  Before that it was... cd's being mailed out.  You can't release a beta to the amount of people they are releasing it to and just provide servers for downloading the game for free.

Oh wait maybe you wanted Fileplanet to host it for members only?

  • TallrockTallrock Member Posts: 32

who cares about that, as long as people like the content.

  • dethgardethgar Member Posts: 293

Blizzard still uses their own version of BitTorrent to distribute patches for WoW. Yes, BT is total LOL if you're an impatient 14 year old.

If it is a torrent that is great lol i actually prefer to use torrents and many people do as well.  if it was hosted by a server it would either be wait in line for a spot or get horrid DL speeds because of all the people connected to it.  also my router likes to reset itself every few hours so with torrents i dont even have to worry about using a DL manager to reconnect to the server. the torrents just reconnect automatically. torrents are far superior IMO

I dislike the torrent method of downloading,  but I can completely understand why this method is used.  It's the most economical way for them to distribute the file.  A personal dislike doesn't equate to a bad method and shouldn't be a disappointment.  I think the problem most people have with everything these days is that they always think it's all about them.

I literally can't believe a 28 year old will type, "I literally LOL'd at this"

Set up your torrent manager and router correctly, stop crying or don't download it.  I don't think anyone would miss another person complaining about having a bit torrent instead of a download server.

    Literally.

The WoW BT client is horriffically bad, a bare minimum of configuration options means it often goes along far slower than it should or even causes your router to lock up.

It's better to find the torrent files the patches download and open them up in Utorrent

I had to triple check to make sure I wasn't in the WoW forums.

Uhhh... wow beta was also a 300-500 kb/s download on fileplanet and their torrent actually worked.  I can't believe a beta of this magnitude is at the mercy of leachy gamers.  As far as your FP beef do you even care to notice the facts?  Yeah FP required a small annual fee but at least it didn't require preorder from the developer to play OB.

Well the difference here is that blizzard actually seeds on their torrent. You always get above 1mb/s download rates and there is even a option to download directly from blizzard and have no peers... On the average patch i see like 5-10 official blizzard seeders. The mythic torrent has absolutely no official seeders trying to get the client out, it's just the gamers.

I have no problem with torrents. The disappointing thing is the scale of the companies involved. EA is a huge name in the gaming industry,  however, they see fit to leave the distribution of the necessary information at the mercy of gamers. Lets face facts. 99.9% of you people couldn't care less who gets what when. This fact is further supported by most of the people responding to this thread.

Personally I had lil problem downloading the files. But there is a majority that have spent 3 or even 4 days of 24 hour downloading to get it done.  Yes torrents have been widely used for DL'ing clients etc, but like some of you said. Those torrents have dedicated seeders to get the information out.

This kind of distrabution is acceptable when I want to DL pirated Hentai from Joe Schmoe, not from a Multi-million dollar corporation.

And I'm suprised that I am not in a WoW form as I type this. I say one negative thing about WAR in general and it is not even related to the gameplay or anything technical about the coding or mechanics, and the "OMG he doesn't like WAR" Fanbois all jump out and want to put their non constructive $.02 in.

I am very excited about WAR and think it will do great. I just don't agree with how they are distributing. When people get thier invites to open beta and if EA/Mythic continue to use the same type of distribution, I am afraid that people will not be able to enjoy thier full OB privlages because of slow DL rates, and thus judge the entire game with that bias. And a LOT of people will do as such.

People complain about everything, want everything to be free and simple, and simply don't want to have to worry about anything. Well, kiddies, it's time to grow up. Life is not free and simple and you have to worry about everything now, once you move out of your parent's house, anyway.

Bittorrents are becoming the de facto method of distributing files to a large number of people. Simple fact of the matter is that it's far more economical for everyone else to use up their own bandwidth that they would have to pay for. If you don't like it, don't do it. It's just a beta for a game and more companies will start doing this.

As far as Fileplanet goes, it nickel and dimes you to death. First, you simply needed to have an account to get access to betas and such. Then you had to pay a nominal yearly fee, like $35/year. Now, you have to pay for premium access to get beta invites and such, or access to files before regular subscribers. But think about this, how often do you actually use the service? I'm not saying it's a bad service by any means, as the downloads are quick and they have an efficient download manager, but the fact of the matter is, it simply doesn't make sense for me to pay money for something I might use only a couple of times a year and they don't have all of the mods that I play.

Added- And for the record, what slow download rates? The more people on a torrent, the faster the overall speed. It took me 3 days to download the torrent, with it being over 800k/sec in the last day. But what would have happened if I had downloaded it the first day? I still would have waited to play because they don't have the servers ready yet. So what are you missing? Oh, yeah...nothing.

twhint, Your post is valid, however you are missing my point.

My point is not "when do i get to play?". There are MANY people who are frustrated with DL rates. And as you pointed out the servers were not up for a few days. Wich ADDED to the frustration. The "OMG after 4 days I have it downloaded! w00t! Now lets play!...... WTF?!" Its this frustration that I am worried about. Not the I wanna play, QQ BS. I don't want people to judge the game on this trivial matter, that could easily have been avoided by a company as large as EA. Because people WILL make judgements, and I don't see it getting any better when OB downloads start. And you are right. The more people on a torrent "SEEDING" the faster DL rates are. If you paid attention to the peers, you have TONS of people who have DL'd like 90% of the client, and only uploaded a few Kilobytes.

Alot of the people with bittorrent problems are using services that have shitty upload/download rates or purposely crush bit torrent connections.   I have comcast the evil empire and I got mine down in 12 hours the patched for about an hour.   There have been numerous examples of hwo to work around the download issue the problem is like always there's always X amount of bitchers that can't comprehend.

Dev's are damned if they do damned if they don't.   Honestly img lad they're not doing a file planet beta..most of the people who come in through file planet are the biggest bitchers and whiners with little interest in the game other than is 5 days of free play.   I pre ordered and im getting into OB..if I had not of been in CB then I'd be waiting for OB and if OB sucked I'd cancel, but most people want to bitch boo hoo i have to pre order.   You know what? Pre order get the codes then cancel the order its not like your paying up front only morons pay in full.

No doubt. I enjoy the WAR community as is now, and I am not looking forward to the community it may turn into. At risk of being redundant. I don't want future players to think that Mythic is just in it for the money like funcom. And that is an opinion you can generate by DLing through torrents via players only.

  • zmortiszmortis Member Posts: 152

I just wanted people to know that I seeded the file for 2 whole days after I downloaded it, my total upload was nearly twice as great as my total download for the files before I decided to give my somewhat warm computer a rest.  Yes, I did find it disapointing that a flie of that size was required to be sipped at a 70kB/sec rate (the average I acheived), but it certainly has not diminished my enthusiasm for the game or Mythic Entertainment.  I also understand why they chose to spend more capital investment in game polish instead of bandwidth fees for beta player client downloads.  Fiscally for Mythic and EA it is a better decision for the final product.  Now when the retail sales start rolling in, and the people are paying monthly fees to support the bandwidth and server upkeep costs, then I can see making a complaint about any kind of slow patch download method.

I hope this adds some perspective.

I'm not sure what point you're after. Of course EA/Mythic are in it for the money. That's the whole point of releasing a game.

It's like anything else. If you judge something from one aspect only, then can you really say you're fit to judge? If the game is good, then it won't matter. If it's not, then it will simply be added to the list of what EA/Mythic did wrong when all the MMO experts speak up.

  • banthisbanthis Member Posts: 1,891

I really don't see the point in players bitching over using bit torrent for beta.  It'd be completely retarded for any company to pay a ton of money for servers & bandwith for closed beta downloads.  Once you get the client down all you do is patch you never have to use the torrent again.  Hell you can even just download only the exe and patch the rest of the game in and ignore everything else to limit your download time.  Anyone taking more than 12 hours should check how they have their ports set up, their service providers rules on torrents, etc.

funny how everyone bitched for a torrent then when a game does have a torrent everyoen bitches anyway.  Make up your minds for gods sake.  Damned if they do Damned if they don't.

I agree that the game is fail, but not for that reason. I can easily download crysis (6.03Gbs?) in under 4 hours, downloading that straight from a server would probably take longer and cost more.

The reason I think WAR fails is because it feels like LOTRO. I like PQs and ToK, that's about it.
