can anyone tell me about this game? i currently play lineage2 and im lookin at getting another game. i am also getting world of warcraft when it comes out.
I can reccomend FFXI. The game was just released in europe so there are a bunch of new players added to the already huge player base, the game has its flaws. Compared to other mmorpgs FFXI rocks and you would like more then lineage 2.
im far from a mmorpg know it all... cuz i barelly played any...im also getting WoW when it comes out!!!
final fantasy XI is really cool....its one of the only mmorpgs i played...i really liked it....plus now u can buy it with the expansion and one month free for only 39.99 canadian...so even cheaper u.s...i recomend it!!! plus if you are a final fantasy fanatic...like me or really like square enix...(im buying the new star ocean veryyyy soon ) you will wanna get this one!!! pick it up its worth it!
You have weapon skills, job abilities, magic and a set of craft skills (that you can only raise by obtaining items and attempting to merge them by crystal (this doesn't always work and might result in you losing the items you used and the crystal)).
Everytime you hit an enemy you get TP, which is a sort of limit break (once you hit 100 (you can expect this in 10 hits of a 2-handed (slow) weapon) that allows you to perform a weapon skill that can chain with others (meaning if you do one CERTAIN weapon skill before another it will add additional damage, and if a spell is used right after the two skills link this will add additional damage to the spell).
Job abilities are essentially skills that you need to activate to obtain their effects. Most Job abilities are almost like passive skills in the sense that they are active over long intervals, but there are some (such as the thief's abilities: trick attack and sneak attack) that add instant damage to your next attack.
Ok.... that's essentially everything you can do in a fight.
Now don't get me wrong, this might seem like a lot to do, but most jobs only get <= 5 job abilities (f.i; a dark knight receives soul eater (only can activate once every 6 minutes), weapon bash (instant stun), arcane circle (temporary buff against a type of enemy), last resort (lasts only 30 seconds, and is, as it's name implies a last resort) and the 2-hour ability (every class has a 2hr ability (can only be used once every 2hrs) that is exceptionally powerful, but only lasts for a short amount of time) in drk's case, it's a absorb the damage you deal kind of thing)
Of course there is a subjob you have along with your main job that is restricted to half the level of your main job (so you basically have two jobs at once, only one is half the level of the other, and you can only wear the items that your main class can wear. You also get the stat bonuses of your subjob)
If you want to lvl in this game, you WILL NEED TO PARTY, unless you pick a BEAST MASTER or SUMMONER.
Party Setup has the following units(6 max):
A healer (always has a white mage as it's main job)
A Black mage/Redmage (these deal the most damage out of any job, and are needed to use their magic during "limit breaks" for maximum damage over time)
{
3 Damage dealing melee classes (Ranger, Monk, Dark Knight, Dragoon)
1 Tank (Always Paladin, Warrior or Monk)
}
or
{
Bard (has abilities that enhance the entire group
Tank
2 Damage Dealers of the n listed above
}
The problem is... that lvling with the solo classes will only allow you to charm creatures(in the Beastmaster's case) and use physical attacks: Neither "Limit breaks" nor "Magic bursts (spell after limit breaks)" will be at your disposal, so that you can only attack, use the <= 10 abilities you get from your subjob, rinse, repeat.
If you are a summoner you face the same problem, only you will probably be casting instead of meleeing (since summoners get the greatest mana pool in the game as a job (main) most people have black mage or red mage subs
You can both cast and melee, but one requires the recharge time of the other.
This game has very crappy graphics ( believe it or not ) compared to other mmorpgs, especially the landscapes, which are so rough and without detail, that you would almost think it was the same pixel-ridden FF7 battle sequence background.
I played this game on a GEFORCE4 (which isn't that shabby).
Exploration is a drag, because of the graphics and also because of the REDUNDANT enemies; you will literally only see maybe... 30-40 monster models in the entire game (pathetic compared to other games).
You can't jump, and the interaction with your environment is minimal: You can't shoot an arrow in a tree or throw items around; you only interact with your environment through battle or through clicking on labels that lead TO CUT SCENES (to give you the illusion that you are actually moving objects around).
However, this also makes this game playable (and very well I might add) by 56k (which I also happen to be using).
So what is there to do?
Fight, take a quest/mission (run to a place, fight, return.....), craft (you select something out of your inventory...click click... fail.. damn..... click click, this takes literally months to do effectively), fish (although this is considered a craft it may or may not involve fighting (since you can catch monsters))....
Uhh.... you can explore..., but because of the aforementioned properties, I cannot force myself to.
Alright, so you like to fight:
Either you solo (boring as hell, at least it is to me)
Or you party (human interaction.... now we're talkin mmorpg)
But... the problem is the exp curve is so high, that people DEMAND the most efficient/effective jobs at higher lvls.
Even the job combinations (of main job and sub job) are usually only limited to two possibilities, and even if you choose the right combination, you will wait LITERALLY, HOURS - DAYS trying to find a party(unless you are a paladin,black mage, and white mage (since they are always required for optimal exp gain)) .
Early game (which should last 1week-2 months depending on if you farm (ugh) for gil) might allow you to get away with radical combinations (like dragoon/redmage or dragoon/whitemage), but once you hit > mid level (30ish), you will be in for a rude awakening: While the whitemages and blackmages will be inundated with invites, the others could possibly wait for days at a time to find a party because of the party-required difficulty of the game and the number of classes that can replace them in a party.
For the latter reason (there being many jobs that do not have a specific function in the party and can be replaced by others (like dragoon, monk, warrior), I am finding it very difficult to continue playing the game (I am a dragoon/darkknight, which being entirely unorthodox, since dragoon/(warrior/thf) has more damage, gets me little to no invites).
There are, however, some people that enjoy the fighting system and socialization with Japanese players so much that the boring craft system and dull landscapes are not much of an impediment.
I suggest you find a friend with an account to try this game before you decide to subscribe to it.
Oh yes, another thing about this game that I do not find positive is the rarity of REQUIRED items (since it is so impossibly hard to raise your crafting skill) that make the time you need to farm exceptionally high compared to other games (which might sway you to invest your time in crafting before anything else, because the best gear gets the invites when you are competing with 10 others like yourself).
I spent around a good 1-2 days (net time, which is for me around 1 month because of the little time I have to spend on this game) for my lvl 30 gear and you should expect to spend at least that much, if not exponentially more time for lvl 40-60 equipment.
Im sorry to give you this negative image of the game, but if I had been given the same information, I could have made a better decision than I had and not even considered buying this game (since Im the type of person that likes to explore and interact in the environment of the game)
(PS: Expansion is not necessary for the real experience, since most augmentations affect late-gameplay_

This is a sequence of characters intended to produce some profound mental effect, but it has failed.
I would recommend FFXI. It's a good game overall, though lacking in some reas(like PvP and soloing ability).
And there are more than 5 skills for a class, with my thief(which granted is one of the classes with the most skills), I had about 8 active skills, about 8 passive skills, and 15+ weapon skills between my various weapons.
And the best part is you can change your job. So if you have a level 20 warrior, and want to play your level 5 red mage, you can just go to town and switch, and then switch back to your level 20 warrior whenever you want to.
So, you could get every class to level 75 on one character, though it would take a long, long time..
And the level curve isn't too bad, at level 55 I could still get a level in one day, with about 7 hours a gaming.
