Raising the bar on endgame bosses/raids

WolfenprideWolfenpride Member, Newbie CommonPosts: 3,988

Found this on the FFXI boards,

www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/85639-18-Hour-Final-Fantasy-XI-Boss-Induces-Puking

Honestly im all for making endgame bosses tougher than recent mmo's have made them, do you think maybe this was taking it a little to far?

I kind of wish other mmo's would provide more of a challenge like this, well not requiring 18 hours or heck even over an hour or two, but definently raising the bar a little than what its been lately.

Any thoughts?

edit: Im not sure whether the raid itself takes 18 hours long, or if this particular attempt took 18 hours because they couldn't kill this mob. From what ive heard this mob is like a super duber mob so Ill agree it shouldn't be easy. I personally think theirs a trick to it they havent figured out

Sorry i just read the title and shouted "18 fucking hours?!?" outloud, im all for challenge, but i cant stand the forced 6 hour raids, where the hell would i find time to sit down for 18. I love FFXI and i would play it more if i had the time to personalyl invest in it, but square-enix went overboard making a raid last that long.

This is more than just gaming what these players are doing, they're really addicted to status and loot. Anyway, 18 hours non-stop is quite insane.

What nationality did that guild have anyway?

    WoW thats freaking hardcore.

Ive heard of Raid or Die but FFXI is leaning toward RAID AND DIE!!! lol

FF11 has the most idiotic raid bosses in the history of MMOs.

They just keep topping themselves with new levels of stupidity.

Now that is funny.   18 hours and the guild calls it quits for health reasons.

I find it amazing that by 2020 first world countries will be competing to get immigrants.

I'd prefer raids if they were much shorter no more then a hour and more massive.  Use a model like War's public quests.

  • gathgath Member Posts: 424

Not even if people tag it as e-sport, no way 18 hours is not insane.

And it makes me think, would they be happy if they had actually finish it and in 17 hours...?

Those people are "less smart". That's why i hated hardcore raiding guilds in any game.

It may look impressive, but in reality it's quite sad. In Lineage2 (retail) I got in 3-4 hour raids, along with other 400 ally players.

But it's basically a kite and spank fest. There is no strategy. Just kite the boss whoever got aggro until the beast one shots you down and It goes after somebody else. Then the ressers will rise you up, buff you, and so on.

Ol' WoW raids (the scripted ones, not the tank-n-spank ones, of course) are far more interesting and entertaining with just 40ppl, or 25 ppl now.

Same could be said about the sieges with 1000+ people (yes, more than a thousand people fighting on a map). It may look magestic and impressive at first, but this zerging style gets boring fast. Even ganking with your party looking for lonely targets is more interesting.

It should never take 18 hours. Either you kill the boss or the boss kills you in 30mins, obviously not including the run through the dungeon to get to the boss. They should make the boss gradually do more and more damage the longer it takes so after a certain amount of time it kills the group if they can't kill it.

That is nuts! Couple of raids like that in a row and you'd be dead at your keyboard!

I would say anything that requires more then 6 hours to do in one sitting is a little extreme but 18 hours?

    That should almost be illegal

I mean even if you only slept for 6 hours thats your whole day!

What a ridiculous statement, this was obviously a dev teams attempt to push the difficulty bar, it just went too far,

nothing to do with hardcore, as people have mentioned above, there's no challenge in attacking a boss with no actions, just a lot of normal attacks, damage and hp. I would call that a snorefest more than anything.

While I was addicted to FFXI at one time this is why I quit at 69, my brother was already doing bosses that took over an hour to kill and it wasn't that they were hard its just that very few people can even damage the bosses. He was a Dark knight which is supposedly one of the top dps classes yet he was hitting the thing for 0 most of the time, most melee's purpose on these long fights is just to skillchain so the black mages can magic burst and damage the boss, pretty damn boring if you're not a black mage.

Ive only raided in Wow at 60 and 70 but what I don't get is how people can say an 18 hour boss fight is "difficult", I mean if your tank can last 18 hours without healers going out of mana then how hard is it really. I mean at least in WoW its balanced around a certain number of players for one, healers will run out of mana in 10 minutes or less with spam healing and most bosses have an enrage timer so that your dps can't suck yet because the fights are 3-10 minutes they must be easy.

I like this. The idea of a boss which is plausibly defeatable, yet would take over 18 hours to do so? That's how characters with [immortal] tags SHOULD be treated. Because everything can, in theory, be killed...
The players who are mad enough to go for the entire thing, well... 'grats to you, but ya still didn't take it down. This is just the MMO version of Penance or Emerald Weapon, a fine FF traditional of sheer stupidity, the pinnacle of Sisyphean tasks. I would even go so far as to say that FFXI would not deserve its mainline numbering without such an insane quest.

I see it from angle of that point of view. Not everyone has to do it, it's only for those who dare. I like the idea, it separates from those who want it from those who really want it. It's sorta beautiful, to risk your life for something you love so much. Who cares what others say, kudos to them and I'm happy that none of them suffered permanent injury.

Dude, its a game, its not beautiful if you are risking your life for a game. People who think its beautiful and think its great along with those who do sit in front of their pc for 18+ hrs trying to kill 1 boss, needs to go outside and breath a little and maybe take a walk, or talk to someone who can maybe help you come back down to earth. B/c If they dont, reality is going to come knocking, and i bet they wont even see it coming.

That's not right. People will try it and fail and be dissapointed. And the people who do succeed should think about their personal health. 18 hours? That's insane.

People GOT what they paid for, listen to the hypocrits that cry that content has gone down hil getting easier and easier, and youf inally find a story talking about an actuall encounter that is so difficult it is downright impossible, and people make it seem as if the company is shady and trying to rip off its customers.

Everyone pays, they know the sub is in place, and when they hit max level they seek a challenge, maybe not that a challenge of that magnitude but a challenge none the less. I can see why devolopers just straddle the fences when it comes to doing anything innovative.

is it possible to switch people out.   IE a truely massive guild that has people taking two hour shifts.

Just wondering, wouldn't know since I already know FFXI would hold little interest for me.

I find it amazing that by 2020 first world countries will be competing to get immigrants.

pfft wimps. 18 hours is nothing. I once spent 26 hours straight in an AV battle that lasted 32+ hours total.

That being said yes an 18 hour raid is a bit extreme. Prefer my raiding in small 2 to six hour chunks. personally.

  • MylonMylon Member Posts: 975

Yeah, this does sound pretty retarded. Perhaps in a more complex game system than FFXI's skill-chain-magic-burst method (and yes, I have played it), this might be fun and epic, but otherwise it just sounds drawn out and boring.

Im positive that some how exploits or other cheats hacks come in, to manage to kill a boss that takes 18hours, bound to happen sooner or later, they prolly used bots so they keep attacking boss while there sleeping.

    Games played:AC1-Darktide'99-2000-AC2-Darktide/dawnsong2003-2005,Lineage2-2005-2006 and now Darkfall-2009.....
In between WoW few months AoC few months and some f2p also all very short few weeks.
