-Gaining levels is impossible passed level 7.

And finally I just bought the game and I love it. It is the best mmorpg I have ever played. Some people are going to like FFXI and some people arn't and they really dont need another one of these hate posts to decide. Theres plenty others on this site and on the internet so give it a rest.

The problems you described is not FFXI. FFXI is known for being a very tight game. Before bashing a game on a forum, you may wanna check your computer specs and get your video driver updated. Your description of the game is the first for me outta hundreds of people playing it.

I played the game as long as any north american ,and even consider myself a FFX1 expert.
My friend who knows nothing about computers and is actually a console raver,has played the game for 4 mnths on his pc with never crashing once,as nor did i with over 100's of game hours logged.
I quit the game for a few small reasons,that i saw warranted my quitting.I have since over the last 2 months tried any mmorpg i can get a free trial on.In saying this i can truly tell you that FFX1 is by far the best overall mmorpg out there.The fact you didnt like it is probably the same reason others i know didnt like it>>>>>>they didnt totally understand the whole fight concept/macros/crafting ideas of the game.Heck i was amazed at even reaching level 40 i still learned new fighting ideas from other players.The skill of team combat is only limited in your approach,heck i could write a 20 page book on the combat system alone.
In my involvment in online games over the past 8yrs or so,i have actually witnessed one thing for a fact..........75% of players flock to games through hype or follow there friends.If you try a game for neither of these reasons ,then you will probably not go into the game with an open mind.
Like most other games i have played,you need a skilled and knowledgeable player to show you the ropes of a game so that you understand and learn everything you need to enjoy the game.
Now i do have to say one thing i never once needed a gm in the game,so i cant comment on them. Square Enix or whoever is actually in charge ,should show some respect to the very large north american player base by coffing up some north american servers.All the servers are in asia.It plays a large factor when camping money items is conscerned.
Why you couldnt level past 7 is from lack of game knowledge im sure,because the game is actually designed to be able to level to about 15-20 as a single player.After thet you really MUST have a party.
If you love playing in a party,dont mind lag,stringent level caps then you will deffinately find something in this game you will like.You might spend up to an hour finding a party,however this is rare and not because the people are unfriendly nor of a different language.
Never forget 3 mile Island and never trust a government official or company spokesman.
Good points besides the ending were its rare to wait for a party for one hour. Actually you can wait up to 5 hours before you get a party and thats true because I hear this from many people in the game when I played.
A few things though this game lacks lots of gameplay and crafting? Sure if you wanna waste 6 hours farming for gil and then spend it in like 2 hours while crafting. And there is a huge lack of monster variation they all look the same lol. Its a joke that they do look like the same.
Guild Wars looks alot better and gameplay is sweet. This game or so ive heard from the channel G4TechTV from the show pulse they went and did a interview of certain people and showed a nice wall of arts and thats only boss's too! They said there is atleast 900+ boss's already in the game. WOW thats huge to be honest this game beats FFXI down like nothin and makes the company look like a joke and no monthly fee. As well the patching is downloaded while you play the game and no need to wait for a huge patch to download and this game can run on low end machines very well and has a nice amont of graphics and the lighting effects are sweet in this game.
Well I could say more but I will stop there and let you guys figure the rest out on your own.

I never had the game crash on me once. But FFXI is the wost MMORPG i have played out of 15 of them. Wish I could get my money back.

My list
- very easy to level, most likely after level 7 you were still fighting low level creatures, so no xp, only fight even matches and up
- game never crashed for me
- don't know about costomer service, never had any problems
- I hate SWG, I wouldn't care if the whole game is free, I despise that game
I know you just posted your specs but somthing has to be wrong with your computer, cause crashing has never happened to me or others it seems, so does it just crash or lose connection to the server, it might be your internet connection

I used the Detonator 62.11 drivers at first with 800x600 w/ 8xAA and 2xAF. The 8xAA is because at no matter what resolution you play, FFXI has jaggies because it was written for the PS2. It would crash after an hour and then every 30 minutes there after. I dropped to the 61.77 drivers since they are official drivers. No change so I went back. I took 8xAA down to 2x and upped the resolution to 1024x768 and played successfully for almost an hour and I have yet to go back and test it for longer. I will be this afternoon, though.
The drawback is that if this fixes it then FFXI does not support high amounts of AA which will turn off any hardware enthusiast to this game. Not to suggest that a hardware enthusiast should be the focus of their programming efforts, but it would be nice if they would at least keep us in mind.

Oh, it'll crash to BIOS. Sometimes (rarely) it will crash to desktop.
As far as leveling, I fought even matches and decent challenges and would be wiped out by both. Somewhat understandable given that I'm a Black Mage, but you'd think it would take that into account when doling out experience.

I disagree with everything you said Locust, but I agree that this game is a total waiste of money.
No live events, no monster raids, no pvp or dueling system and $1.00 per additional character... characters hardly customizeable, either they were really cool looking avatars (90% of the population had the same avatar) or they were incredibly ugly. You couldnt customize your stats... my god this was like playing a single player game with an online chatroom included. The forced grouping would've been nice if the battle system wasnt as slow as a high retarded kid with a hangover... My computer NEVER crashed with this game, or lagged, and I had the minimal requirements for it when I bought this game.
Damn this game sucked.
FFXI- Quit after 10 months

Ragnarok Online- Quit after a week
Good News! It runs... with jaggies from Hell!
The only way I could get it to run indefinitely was to turn off AA entirely.
Anything else would crash in an hour or less, like clock work. I must say that I am really 
disappointed 
that Square can't program support for AA in a PC game that has enjoyed nearly 2 years of bug fixing, especially considering the fact that the game is bypassing the DirectX video renderer (i.e.: jaggies are just as bad at 1600x1200 as they are at 800x600).
The game is a lot more fun without the crashing and whatnot, but it just isn't fun when you fight an enemy that the game says is easy prey, only to be killed after using your strongest spells multiple times.

I've played ffxi for like a week and half before my summer break was over. I managed to get whm to lvl 30,
but now is when I've started getting a bit frustrated. Lvling was pretty easy once I started grouping,
especially as a whm, but unforunately after a while of playing whm, I didn't think it was so great. I kept
going with whm till 30, so that I could have the option of an adv job. Now, I was thinking of taking up
warrior or paladin, but none are supposedly any good unless you have the right "sub job". I really don't feel
like lvling something I don't like over and over, just so that my job is considered the best combo, I don't
have enough time for that. Also, lvling a bunch of jobs over and over again, to me is working, and I play
games to have fun, I get payed at my job to work.
yuh you cant say that about the game its just your opionion and what connection you got etc.. and how long you play it and how much you play it.

It certainly is kind of tedious between 7 and 10, but it's not "impossible." Granted, the tedium in those levels combined with the rest of the game's tedium is what makes it so terrible, but come on, now.

So that means the GAME ITSELF sucks? FF11 blows, but I'll admit it was one of the more stable games I've ever played (only randomly crashing once in a while for me.)

Well, they certainly are doing plenty to ADD to the game. To me, it doesn't make the game more enjoyable, since it's still the same game.

SWG, in all its flaws, is definately a better game in general. That isn't saying much, but at least SWG offers quite a bit of originality.
heh i know someone who runs it on his Rad at full AA with no probs, i run mine on 4x and have no probs.

Crashes must be your end, i speak to 4 people who play none have crashed, my dad is logged on nearly every second of his free time (which is like 10hrs a dayish) and hasn't crashed.
Leveling can be a pain in the ass at times, but why sit in ONE spot waiting for a party, get of your arse and find people, check areas etc.
level 7 - 10 is a bit akward, i just used to team and go hit toughies in Tahrongi (storrlin saps and rarabs)

Like someone already said, you don't majorly need extra slots since you can do all jobs on one char and if they gave you 4 you'd prolly get most people using them purely for mog space

There are a few registry hacks known for the game to improve the graphics. Start up regedit and go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SOFTWARE/PlayOnlineUS/SquareEnix/FinalFantasyXI. Now there are 3 values that you want to change:
0000 : This value manages the mipmapping in the game. Even if you turn mipmapping on in the config menu, it doesn't seem to work. Change the value of this to 3 (decimal) for a big graphics improvement, without any effect on the framerate.
0003 and 0004 for anti-aliasing: The game does support anti-aliasing, super-sampling to be more exact. This is what you change your background resolution for. Normally, you can't set this higher then 1024x1024, which gives the jaggies and some blurring in the game. Change the settings of these to 640 for both for a background resolution of 1600x1600 or 800 for both for a background resolution of 2048x2048. My pc (about the same as yours, only with an athlon 64 and radeon 9800 pro) manages 1600x1600 easily but starts lagging a bit at 2048x2048.
Admittedly, I didn't exactly start this thread in a rational state of mind (given it was just after my 4th FF11 crash that night), but thanks go to all those who replied with help and/or their honest opinion. Special thanks go to Aphex for solving my problems.

Been playing since close to the U.S. launch and I've enjoyed myself quite thoroughly. I have a semi-decent computer and have NEVER EVER seen the game crash. The few times I've dealt with support went over incredibly well so I personnally have nothing bad to say about that. Leveling isn't hard, it's just different. What angers me is when you have people who have been playing Everquest for 2 years telling you leveling takes long, or that the game is boring, yet they'll sit down for 4 hours and wait for a single monster to spawn so they can kill it and do it all over again.
Can we say, "Spell Check?"
And for the record, one voice means nothing in our society, so even if I was trying to "ruin Square's name [by] lying" I wouldn't stand a chance.

Folks, this idiot just sumed it up, hes just one voice, just because this 2 year old dont like the game cause he bought is computer from the junk yard and FFXI crashes all the time does not mean this game is bad. I have a nice system set up to play any good game and NEVER NOT ONCE did ffxi crash on me. Meet the min requirments and your fine.
No, the game is still bad, its just crash free. So you get to be in a crappy game rather than your desktop, yippee!
