Ok. Now I'm worried.
I really like the ideas in Spellborn. The combat looks different (no targeting), the graphics aren't terrible. In fact, they look pretty good! And, I've always wanted to try a game where gear is not the entire focus.
So why am I worried? Because helpless Spellborn will be releasing, sandwitched between a 400 pound gorilla and a 10,000 pound gorilla who are engaged in a gladiator battle to the death. Spellborn WILL be caught in the crossfire.
It just makes me sad. I just can't shake the feeling that despite their best, diligent efforts, Spellborn will not be able to sustain itself. It it just me?

Um .... what are you talking about? What are the gorillas? AoC and WAR? I do not think it will have much of a problem on the AoC side (see a variety of trolls and actual thoughtful posts regarding problems with this game). WAR is one of the gorillas? I would not worry. AoC was well-hyped, and look what happened there. And, you must be a fanboi of Spellborn because you are making the assumption that it will be a great MMO without a shred of evidence. I learned from AoC ... make no assumptions until you've played the game.

and now you have reached true enlightenment. You cannot accurately predict how a game will turn out until you've given the released version a good trial.
Spellborn may be good, it may suck, we'll have to wait till its released to really find out.

Skooma2 I think he is referring to WoW:WoftLK and Warhammer. I also think the point he was really trying to make was that even if its good it will fade into obscurity because of these two giants. Why do people always have to try and ruin the post and not just take part!?!?!?
Personally I think it will make a difference at first on the numbers without a doubt. People will be too busy or poor to buy into this game, HOWEVER, if the game is good then the numbers will definitely start to slowly increase. Word of mouth means alot especially in the MMO world dont worry. But it has to be good first
Regardless of the other game’s spellborn will be faced with, if it's a worthy game it will survive and if it 's an awesome game it will take its place as such, people have free will and free minds and can choose for themselves. So no matter the blitzkrieg of WoW, the impending WAR or even aion and for those who still hold hope Darkfall, Spellborn has no less chance, so hold your game close my friend and wait until it's release before thinking doom.
I think a truly good game will always be able to at least sustain itself, if not flourish, even if it lacks the hype or advertising power that the competition has.
Truth always comes out about whether a game is good or not, in time. And word of mouth between friends is far more effective (or damaging) than a thousand banner ads or viral advertisers. Sneaky tricks like NDA's and promising unimplemented features can help delay people realizing about a bad game, but they can't stop the flow of information forever.
The games that I think you are referring to as gorillas are no exception to this, and will be judged themselves based on how good they really are. One of them I think already is. Unless you are referring to the WoW expansion and not AoC. In which case, we really should just wait and see before worrying. Like anything else, it could turn out not as good as expected.
Or you could look at it another way. Spellborn won't be caught in the crossfire, it will be off on the sidelines, safe and sound while it watches the other two tear eachother apart. Spellborn isn't a 'target' of either, so it doesn't have as much to worry about. Hes the guy in the shadows that swoops in after the smoke clears, and picks through whats left from the two corpses.
Maybe.
Waiting for: A skill-based MMO with Freedom and Consequence.
Woe to thee, the pierce-ed.
So many people seem to want to commit themselves to a game based entirely on. . . what? They seem to be using the parts of their brains that govern things like faith and religion. I won't buy an MMO until after the first patch. I poke around here, see what people are saying, and then I buy. Now, after spending a week looking in at the AoC forums, I may start waiting three or four months after a game goes live to buy it.
As for Spellborn. . . I don't think it's trying to compete with the MMO gorillas. Which is a good thing. Look at the game list on this site. Sort the games by ranking. Observe how many games have been thriving for years on subscriptions numbering well under half a million. Personally, if I were to find myself playing the "next WoW," I would wonder where I had gone wrong.
If game appeal to surten audience and it lift up to exspectation most in this community wants and its bug free servers are stable, enough content and originallity it will survive onlsaught war and wotlk.
Games played:AC1-Darktide'99-2000-AC2-Darktide/dawnsong2003-2005,Lineage2-2005-2006 and now Darkfall-2009.....
In between WoW few months AoC few months and some f2p also all very short few weeks.
The Chronicles of Spellborn (TCoS) is an MMO under development by Spellborn NV using the renowned Unreal® Engine™.
Goodbye.
Just so you know, it is the Unreal 2 Engine but heavily modified. EPIC Games also suggested that they used that one instead of the new Unreal 3 Engine.
about Spellborn and the competition, as long as there are enough players to make it a decent investment for the developers, then i'm happy. if they could get 500.000 subscribers, then the game is already a decent success
I do wonder who the US Publisher is going to be,hopefully he'll be announced in G|C Leipzig

They wont have 500k subs at release or even for sometime after it and they dont need to.
If a game did have 500k it would be seen as a huge success dont be mislead by WoW's subs,I think TCoS will launch with around 150-200k which I am sure the devs would be very happy with, then depending how it releases it will of course rise or fall in the sub department.
If someone had came up to me in 1980 when I was on my Atari 2600 and said we will be playing games with thousands of people at the same time.I guess my response would have been,"but I only have 2 joysticks"

This is one of the very few up coming MMOs that I am watching. I am not really concerned one way or another when its release, as long as it is released and plays well. One can only hope.
MMOs Played: I can no longer list them all in the 500 character limit.
Skooma2 I think he is referring to WoW:WoftLK and Warhammer. I also think the point he was really trying to make was that even if its good it will fade into obscurity because of these two giants. Why do people always have to try and ruin the post and not just take part!?!?!?

yes he talks of wotlk and war...because aoc is not even competition against hello kitty online...
Many ppl will not even look into spellborn because theres war and wotlk...if these 2 would fail..then ppl would turn to spellborn
Unfortunately, I think HumbleHobo is right. Spellborn seems to be a well designed game, but it's releasing at a very bad time. Many of the current WoW subscribers will more than likely stick with it until the newness of WotLK wears off at least, and those looking to play something new are keeping a keen eye on WAR. What's worse is WAR is going to have an open beta prior to release, and if it's good, people will probably choose to stick with it than taking a chance on an unknown that could be all hype.
I'm sure Spellborn will attract a number of people who (like myself) are intrigued by the combat system and graphics, but the numbers won't be anything close to what they could be if it weren't for the release of the gorillas during the same timeframe.
Whoever said 150-200k subscribers initially is grossly overestimating I'm afraid. Time will tell though.
I doubt that Spellborn really has to compete with those two big games. I expect it will be something different then WoW and War, so as long as the game is stable, has good content and does more then just being a WoW clone, I think it will gain its own fans.
If I see how many people are bashing now on CoA's forum, because 'the game sux' (their opinion, not mine) I expect some will always try new games, will be disapointed and then cry loudly on the forums how bad the game is.
Personally I would like something a bit more challenging, a bit more complex and with a good story, then the same old stuff over and over again. Maybe Spellborn will be that...
I have been in the TCoS beta since april of last year and the WAR beta since September of last year. To be honest I do not think TCoS is going to do well compared to WAR or even WoW. I will respect their NDA and not give my reasons till it is lifted, but the OP is pretty much on the mark beyond just advertising dollars in my opinion.
Cheers!

Not every game has to try n beat WoW eh? I am watching this game, have been for about a year now. I imagine some ppl with leave WoW to try something new...n War is getting hyped up...after the AoC joke I imagine ppl will be staying away from hyped games till after release.
I think this game needs a bit more publicity, far to unknown. But it could be, as others have stated, a smaller niche playerbase. If the game plays good n it's fun, I will give it a run, as I am sure others will try it out as well. Not every game hasta sell huge right off the bat, then loose subs to another game shortly after. AoC had huge sales...tho I don't think it is doin so well now. Might start off small n become popular as ppl leave WoW or War for something a bit different or because they are bored with other games.
Been following TCoS for quite awhile now. And I just don't see it doing well anymore. I only recently started thinking about it like this. After a major lack or communication, and seeing how many MMO companies are going under from the "scene" getting pumped over games like warhammer, I see a decent amount of sales for the TCoS, but then canceled accounts shortly after. Will I buy it? Oh definitely.
I mean, just looking at the site, you can't help but get excited. Smart screenshots (from May), pages of Lore, and a somewhat busy forum.
Just remember.... Vanguard was the exact same way.
All of this is assumeing the game actually comes out right?
Aside from darkfall or duke nukem forever this is the largest crock of vaporware to date.
well i can tell you it aint vaporware, played it last year on a press event(Damn the girls that served drinks and food were hot ) in The Hague, Netherlands and killed a lot of German pressmembers Until a Community Manager arrived with his Level 50 character and kicked my ass
For the rest NDA is holding me back to reveal more about the game. But i guess it's best to wait 1 more week, since the game is going to be shown on G|C Leipzig, the biggest European games convention. They also said they wanted to show some new features
That's also the reason why it's been so quiet around the game, a lot more exclusive stuff for G|C Leipzig. Don't forget that they also need to announce their US publisher, since they said they had signed a letter of intent. So next to the special feature they were going to shown i hope for some nice screenshots/video material and more info about the release in Europe and the US.

Ive been beta testing this game for about over a year now ( I won the contest for a beta key on mmorpg.com's contest a long while back). And all I can say is this game is a horrible.
Yes, its my opinion and im sticking to it. Ive tried to give it time to develope but over the course of the year or 2 it still doesn't spark my interest. It wont appeal to much im assuming and can quite honestly say it wont keep to many people around.
you assume that 11 million is THE majority of the MMO population...how wrong you are. all up (cant be stuffed to look up the figures) i'd say your looking at around 50 million MMO players wordwide. now i know WAR has been hyped up a lot but thats no reason to assume its gonna get even close to the million mark at release. WoW was a one in a million (or 11 million for comedic effect) and managed to grab and hold onto more than 1million subs. to date NO other non asian, pay to play game has come close to that mark.
Spellborn will do just fine as long as it doesnt panic and start trying to be something it cant (as you said...a 400 pound gorrilla)
MMO wish list:
-Changeable worlds
-Solid non level based game
-Sharks with lasers attached to their heads
I've played in The Hague as well, just solely by its combat system, the game has going alot for it, combine that with the lore that I find personally impressive and is something they can build on and you could have an epic adventure, that keeps you busy for quite a while.
Of course, the devs will have to keep implementing advanced and new features that strengthen the game to keep one occupied, but thats not an odd thing for online games.
I can at least share with you that the screenshots are not altered in any way, the athmosphere you see, is actually in the game.
"died" in your "heart a little"??
Please get out more, you are disturbed.
