Casual UK Player seeks Grown-up Free MMORPG

SupercollideSupercollide Member Posts: 34

Hi,I'm a newbie here and I'm looking for recommendations for a reasonably grown up free MMORPG.  I can only play casually so I can't be doing with forking out cash or having to grind, grind ,grind all the time.  I love to find one where the quests are more than just kill X of this, collect Y of that , I want one where you can dig into the story too.  I also can't stand identikit characters where everyone looks the same so a decent level of character customisation's a must.  I'm in the UK and tend to play last evenings so it'd be good if I could find one with likeminded folks too.

So you know what I like - well Sci-fi / Fantasy's my preference but it's not exclusive and I've got/recently had accounts with the following games:

FlyFF - I like it a lot but it's hard to find casual players my age & timezone to grind with, not good when your best character's a lvl 55 healer.

Last Chaos - way too identikit characters

RF Online - decent but it's just not 'grabbed' me

Air Rivals (formerly called Space Cowboys) - the flying's great, other wise.......the flying's great.

Ogame - browser space empire game, good for lunchbreaks

Ikariam - browser roman empire game, ok for lunchtimes

Seibertron: Heavy Metal War - browser Transformers battle game. not bad but the community's the best about it.

I'm trying to get into Perfect World Internationals Beta (waiting for an email) and I've kinda been recommended Sword f the New World but having read a few reviews I'm not so sure about that one.  If the Firefly MMO arrives I'd probably go nuts for it as long as it was good.

Any suggestions for games gratefully recieved.

Cheers

EDIT: oh yeah forgot to mention I don't really PvP much but like the idea of that being an option.

    mmh that's a hard one

I'm also searching for a long long time for such a game, and I still didn't find it.

I'm a wow vet, I played that game for years. I also played GW for a long time.

I bought lotro but I didn't created my account yet due to some financial problems.

I also hope to find a free mmo that's fun and isn't a total grind and I can tell you: It's hard to find!

I don't even knows if that really exists!

You should try out archlord, bid of a grind but quite fun for a free game (at least for a while). I also tried it but i removed it from my computer because I had these strange errors all the time.

A fun game with pvp, nice world, quests ect is regnum online: www.regnumonline.com.ar But I can tell you those graphics sucks... But if you don't care you should try that one. The game has promissing features.

Another game I heared great things about is ROHAN online. It isn't added in the game list here yet. I don't know why but annyway.. www.playrohan.com take a look here.

If you haven't tried Guild Wars I would say buy the box! you won't regret It's a nice casual game and it has no monthly fee!

2 Free games I'm looking forward to is Perfect World and Runes of Magic. They both look nice and have promising features so keep an eye on those

I hope I helped you a bid with this ^^

I can't think of a free MMO for grown-ups. I mean, Exteel and Guild Wars are cool. But you have to buy the original game of GW in order to play. Good news those. You can get it off Amazon, or eBay for ridiculously cheap.

There is no game for grown ups.

Like most of the population for games is filled with children and teenagers.

Does it have to be an MMO?

If not, try AdevntureQuest, MechQuest and Dragon Fable.

    theuniversal.net

it's like a sandbox scifi and it mainly full of adults...

Anarchy online is probably the most mature game out there other then lord of the rings online and everquest 2 but but ao the classic version is free if you want expansions its like 5 dollars a month but really you can enjoy the classic version fine.

The game has a great community it has alot of complexity and depth and actually makes you think unlike most mmorpgs it doesnt feel like grinding its alot more challenging yea its not as casual as some games but any mmorpg can be played casually.

The other is eve but you got to pay for it you can train your skills and go offline while they still train but you need a subscribtion for a long time before you can really compete with vet players. And it is hardcore pvp just fyi.

    Saga of Ryzom

Sadly, I have never played this game but I always hear good things about it. I believe it's just getting back into the scene from a long hiatus.

Saga is a great game but personally I didnt like the abilities and didnt like the fact there was no classes its a really good idea sure but I prefer classes with sandbox type of gameplay like in ao.

But saga of ryzom I believe has probably more sandbox type of gameplay then anarchy online. But you have more options in anarchy online like quests and etc.

Thanks for all the ideas folks, I appreciate that I'm a fussy begger and I'm asking a lot for a F2P game but you've definately given me some great games to try.

I'm now signed up for Perfect World's Closed Beta so I'll see how that goes.
If that's not up to scratch then Rohan looked the next best but sadly my main Gaming PC isn't up to the spec so I'll either try and see if my wife's laptop will run it or try and buy Guild Wars on the cheap. I remember Saga of Ryzom's ads when it first came out so I might just check that out as well.

I really loved the idea of theuniveral.net but that'd be dangerous for me to play as just end up obsessively working and re-working my own little world

I did have a load of mates get into Eve & Lord of the Rings after they left Star Wars Galaxies but they've pretty much deserted it now. It was a shame as I would have followed them into SWG but none of us liked the changes. Hopefully Bioware will give us SW fans what we want with KotOR Online.

    Cheers!

From my experience, there are very few F2P communities that are mature.  If you're looking for a mature community try EVE Online, but it is P2P.

Otherwise I would recommend Combat Arms just because it's a casual FPS', has nice graphics, and is F2P or Navy Field just because of it's community.  If you're into the WW II stuff also and like ships that's a big +
