So, I'm making a 3d fantasy mmorpg called Blue Moon Online and i was wondering if anyone had some ideas or pointers they would like to share.
Website: http://www.blue-moononline.webs.com <-- still in very early developement stage.
*In Beta*
Here is what will be in the beta, all additional stuff will be added in later versions
-3 Factions, 2 Races per (6 total)
-a cross between skill and class based fighting setup

make the optional things like marriage and actions and dances that will finish a game all time^^ also make something whats totally different of the rest of the fantasy games something no one has before added in a fantasy game. Flying is hard to make but its something different also the lvling must be fast ppl wont play if there is no fast lvling, make sure it will go slowly if there reach a certain lvl so u can sell boost packages
make a fast running or mount system, and u use the mounts at lvl 1 already, also make a big landscape and cool quests with a certain humor in it. People will like it, and what makes it all good... Take a good name what ppl making curious.^^ I hope u have some ideas now, its all optional but its certainly what ppl like.
greets and C.U.
Santana
btw. make sure the bugs will be solved as soon as possible cause it can be such great game but with round each 2 sec a new bug is really anoying
I have no money, I have no style, all I can give u is my smile:). DONT WORRY, BE HAPPY!!!!!!
Thanks Santana, I have already been thinking about mounts and wide landscapes, as well as flying. I had also been thinking about something like marriage where you bond with a certain player and when you train with them your bond level goes up and you can recieve special skills from it, but now i will probably just call it marriage.

If you're serious about making an MMO, power to you man, you're living the dream. I'd love to help. Hit my inbox up and we can talk about what I can bring to the table; I've got some experiance with 3D programs, though I'm not too good at it. Concept art I can definately do
hey, that sounds awesome kurai. I might be able to send you some basic ideas that i have and you can clean them up and edit them if you want, what 3d programs have you used? I've used gmax and blender3d

it is real useful, thx to share experience
Sounds like a nice 'idea', but I've read too many posts claiming to be from people making their own mmorpg to believe this isn't another claim. Good luck on your project but don't be surprised if nobody supports you or volunteers without first seeing screenshots, that's just how people will react, is your game 2d or 3d? If I could add any input it would be try to add quests that require a puzzle to be solved, randomly generated would be ideal, not a point A B & C quest, but a quest that involves an actual puzzle between A B & C, the puzzle being whatever you choose to create but something creative that requires players to use their brain and have a choice to do something other than PvP or mindless quest, or grinding. I've noticed a trend in disposable garbage mmorpgs, they are all the same, they have mindless quests, grinding and pvp elements that even if they are amazing they always lack a storyline and quest system as I described.
Your player housing system though sounds good and would stand out from other games.

Thanks Razimus, i was thinking about making a series of quest related to some sort of prophecy dealing with the lore in the game, where all the instructions to the quests are in poem form.

i kinda agree with razimus on this one, ive seen a lot of ppl claiming to be making mmos.....very few work out. ive actually tired it myself a couple times, none i started just joined later until they died. im a graphic designer, though i tend to focus more on technical stuff instead of artistic things
also i can say, just like most people on this site, that ive tried just about every mmo out there...most of which are practically the same thing...and the only real way to get a large amount of people playing is to come up with something genuine and unique. flying is a good idea, and can be fun, but its been done before. what you really need is to get a bunch of people together (on an irc or something) and just brainstorm for ideas. now i know that if your working on this alone right now that your gonna want the ideas that you come up with to take priority, but in all honesty that might not be the best of ideas. although i do really like the idea about weapons and player owned things, it still doesnt seem like its enough to make it a unique game.
hmm thats all i can think of for now lol, maybe ill post some more stuff later.
make sure you have tons of content for all lvl plus max lvl toons oh and TONS of TONS of LOOTS
i wish you luck. Though i'm very skeptic that this will go anywhere but on paper...hopefully you can prove me wrong =D
thanx pyrosent, for the lecture, and im still working on more ideas, the only reason im working on this alone is because whenever i try to get a group started, i can never get meetings to gether or even communication, online or offline. and thanks sirbongsalot for the ideas

well if you ever need some help, just ask, im a sucker for joining groups to make games
right now im a bit busy making a webcomic actually work, but once thats up and running ill have more free time.
What is the game gonna be called..? What is the official website?
And, you should have 3-5 races for each faction, and make them all unique. Good Emotes. Be able to go anywhere. Make it sandbox. Make it completely customization. Make me in the beta/alpha.
Oh, and. Make SURE it isn't just like another Free Jappeense Grind Fest. Noone likes thoose.
OH! And have a full player-politics system. Where elections are held, and players get elected to office.
AND. Make it so you can kill anyone and anyone can kill you.
In other words... make it a complete sandbox game, but keep it alive, and good too.
Be sure to prepare a databes regarding to your game!! it helps a lot of game!!! looking forward to your game!!!
illl say make lots of skills that are not boring .
Fantasy MMorpg eh?
As long as it keeps it's game interesting, why not?
Truegamer42, you should be able to use your blender skills for your mesh editing. It's powerful enough and free and I'm almost positive works with the RC engine. Keep us posted as you progress I'm curious to see something good come from RC made games.
It sounds interesting, I could imagine it would be awesome for yourself if you managed to pull it off.
Here's my idea - since many great games are available you will probably be better off with trying to focus on your most original concepts, factions and classes have been done before, combat is a beaten horse with mmo's look at how many daggers or swords or bows there is in all games.
I'm presuming it will be 2D or low level graphics 3D and since many up to date games are out and have rinsed the combat mechanisms dry, you might want to simplify the combat mechanics - what comes to mind is the Legend of Mir type of fighting.
This will allow you to focus on other aspects off the game that you mentioned. Guilds, player owned cities, crafting will obviously have to be involved, here's where imo you could make your game excell, even with mainstream games there's not a lot of games with great content in the crafting department. Saying all this here are a few of my idea's.
So I'd suggest a dynamic system, where you could make classes have only one purpose meaning a thief could only steal and break in to buildings so it's sole purpose is to be rich but the fast way, obviously a guild of thieves could be protected by a guild of assassin's because the guild of thieves funds the assassin's guild by buying their weaponry. These guilds would be obviously made of the playerbase but they know they have to help each other as their guild sign is the same logo, for example a shadowed moon.
Ofcourse an assassin's role would be to be a flawless killer with low defense, so they share some of the thieves stat's just that they fight more lethal where a theif's fighting is more basic but they're stealthier. I could go into more detail but it would take forever so I'd leave it as that and hopefully you get the idea of what I mean for other classes .
Another idea would to make crafters only be able to craft, they get protection from guards in cities, they could use a sword but not as proficent as say a warrior(mostly use it for hunting animals) or if a thief broke in their house but with the money they make they could invest a little to pay people/henchmen to bodyguard them while they're out.
Also make crafting as interesting as possible if you can - easy to learn but hard to master some crafting I'd love to see in the game would be a concept where you have to experiment to find the recipe, this might sound long or to hardcore but if you managed to somehow make it guidelined it could work, for example you want to be an armour crafter theres a recipe their to make loads of armour and it can be similar to the first item you create for instance a pair of shoes you make could be like 2 pieces of leather where as the next level up could be boots which required 2 pieces of leather and 1 piece of metal, then you record the information in your crafters journal and you can carry on experimenting also different type of animals could drop different leather or metal or whatever so say you were an advanced crafter you could use a bow to kill crocodiles to make stronger leather boots or footwear and they also change in appearance.
maybe any of these idea's might help you along your journey all the best wishes to you remember make the game for your needs don't try catering for people too much it's your vision and if your vision's right to the people you can become very successful.
well u could also add item rarity.what i mean is that u could find a certain item two times and it would have different characteristics.u could have their name coloured differently lets say a common item coloured with grey an uncommon with white a rare with green etc.
your pretty good trying to make a game on your own i wish u good luck
and make the drop percentage and the drop quality in the instances better than the other maps and also make the monsters more difficult to kill.so we can have some action in the instances
good luck again
doubt it;
whose going to do the multi thousands of man hours worth of programming. your profile says your 15. it's just not going to happen unless your "tool" is rpg maker 2003 or something.
