For those of you who don't know this is the same game that at one time was being built as Marvel Universe Online I played champions a bit and liked it but would like this much better if it had stayed in the marvel universe as I am a huge marvel comics fan I'm sure I'll still give it a go but anyone know what happenend?
but yeah, to call this game Fantastic is like calling Twilight the Godfather of vampire movies....
Comments
whered you play it?
well from what i read i think microsoft is scared of getting into the MMO market
Oops I should have mentioned it was champions pen and paper just pointing out I wa ssomewhat familiar with the champions universe not the mmo
but yeah, to call this game Fantastic is like calling Twilight the Godfather of vampire movies....
ah, yea like i said...Microsoft is afraid to try to venture into the MMO market due to their last horrible failure.
So microsoft has the rights to a marvel mmo and hired cryptic?

there were also some dissagreements between marvel/microsoft on licensing
Microsoft doesnt have rights to it, they were just the publisher. And yes, they want into the mmo market but are too chicken shit to take the plunge. I read an interview with Brian Bendis (he is the top writer at Marvel currently and was part of the project) he said that out of nowhere Microsoft suddenly pulled the plug, no reason given. As to why Cryptic did not stick with Marvel and find a new publisher...that I dont know.
Could have sworn that microsoft and marvel both pulled out due to not being able to guarantee WoW-like success.
I don't have the link, but the press release given at the time sugggested that Microsoft wasn't happy with the solutions presented in incorporating the Marvel universe in a MMO setting. IE the interaction with marvel characters to limiting to be worth the license.
That sounds sensible I'd guess but I hope marvel gives it another shot because I'm starting to fear they won't have to do much to be better than DCUO

Microsoft bought the rights to make an MMO based on the Marvel Universe, and then hired Cryptic to make it. The project was canceled by Microsoft, and there was nothing Cryptic could have done, aside from buying the rights from Microsoft, to continue making a Marvel based game. Microsoft hired Cryptic to make the game, Cryptic didn't secure the rights and then contact Microsoft.
Microsoft likely still has the rights to make a Marvel Universe MMO, depending on stipulations in the contract (such as having to have a released game by a certian date, or needing to show a certian amount of progress by a certian date). Considering some of the poor contracts the folks at Marvel have made over the years, Microsoft might have the rights to the Marvel MMO for the next ten years (the reason why it took so long for movies based on Marvel's characters was because they licensed them to people who were unable to come up with financing for the films, or had made a fim that was so bad that nobody was willing to distribute it, such as the original Fantastic Four film).
I wrote something up on this issue previously. The rumour I believe is that Marvel cancelled the project (or agitated until the project was cancelled) so that they could get back the rights to develop their own MMO at some point in the future.
I really don't understand how Marvel or DC expect an MMO to be immersive. In their universes there aren't thousands of Superheroes running around, at most a hundred or so, but a server will hold 2-3k players if the game is popular. The immersion goes out the window, along with all the Spiderman, Superman, and Batman clones that everyone will want to make.
Yeah, the true reason a DCUO is being made, is mainly because of the name behind the property. Hopefully they wont fumble with this IP like Funcom did with Conan, as the fanbase behind DC, and the comic books in general is probably alot louder than the Conan fanbase. Personally, I'm not going to play a DC or Marvel MMO simply because of that. Its unoriginal enough to see several batmans running amok, but even more unoriginal when there is several batman-wannabes running amok in an MMO that already has Batman in it. :P
Oh, Dethgar, check out the Justice League cartoon that used to play on Cartoon network. They had the first that had the core, batman, superman, flash, greenlatern, martian, wonderwoman and hawkgirl. They then made a second one, a continuation of that, which threw in an ungodly amount of superheroes. And while it didnt have thousands, I'm sure there was close to 100 random ones put in lol.
Aye, I know there has been quite the extension in DC over the years, even so I don't think it would be around the amount of online population an mmo needs. Marvel would make sense if they are all mutants learning at Prof X's academy or similar, but even then the landscape is a lot smaller in terms of population. Not to mention both universes have alternate versions where things are more cartoonish or more realistic(IE The new Superman, Batman, Spiderman, movies are somewhat more realistic than certain comic, tv, and movie series.). Appeasing an IP's background is hard to do in MMO's, I expect War to have problems there when it comes to the hardcore fans.
