They did. They only kept the programming portion, Cryptic got the license and all of the artwork that had been done for the game. Since cryptic has an existing engine already they just had to put in the art work to get at least a short play demo.

No, Star Trek Online isn't dead, but Perpetual Entertainment seems to be.
Cryptic has posession of the IP, now, we just have to wait and see if they can do well with it, I have high hopes for the game, since all the other sci-fi genre games out at this time suck harder than the vacuum lines at the drive-thru bank.
After reading the new FAQ and all the following along I did with Perpetual, it seems to me we are getting Cryptics game with Perpetuals artwork. AND their story line...ish.

Lol PE's story line? This story line was written by Gene Roddenberry years ago my friend.

Well since Gene is dead and has better things to do, what I mean is the fact that the whole game takes place in the 25th century years after the next gen era. I think they are trying to avoid Genes Story altogether except for the names places and things from it. I would have rather played in the middle of the next gen era myself but lets just see what happens.

In other words, they're making the game exactly as PE was going to. In other words, /fail incoming.

If you were to do some investigating you would know that isn't true He who sees the glass half empty.

I didnt say I was down on the idea. Just that I would have liked playing in the middle of the next gen era. Listening to the old Hailing Frequencies radio shows, the PE crew had hinted at doghnut (how the hell do you spell doughnut?) shaped saucer sections and the fact that it takes place in the early 25th century things like that make me think its PEs artwork and SOMEWHAT story. It looks to me however that they are gonna make Klingons bad guys again to give us all a faction choice. Thats how I see it but I do not see the glass as half empty, Im gonna play it till it becomes SWG.

Well, if you are sincere, you should check out the web site:
And you would see that they are using their own "Cryptic Engine" which does not use Perpetual's artwork or code, it takes place after "ST;Nemisis". They didn't set it in the Next Gen time period because they needed to have an opposing faction to aid folks who want PVP combat and also they didn't want to deal with adding all the NextGen characters on an Enterprise in game (since every fan would be all over that area of space just to be near their idols) . They have stated that they may also have a Romulan and Andorian faction in expansions
I could go on and on, but it would be easier if you visit the site and check it out for yourself, just because PE pissed the IP away doesn't mean that Cryptic will.
I've had discussions in the official forum about things like this.. Personally from what i've heard of the game my view as to what it's going to be like is Elite/Freelancer "style", with Fleets (guilds) that can build mines and starbases etc, mining and merchants etc will be availible (on a role play basis i think), but instead of comabt being the main focus like with EVE/Elite/Freelancer, exploration is the main focus.. if i'm right then i'm in for one hell of a ride and gonna love it, specially if it contains a player driven economy like pre-NGE SWG and crafting as complex too.

Like the Phoenix rises from the ashes, Star Trek rises to try their hand at creating a world renound MMO.
