It would be; There must be a player crew and ship must not be welfare. Every game with ships or boats do the same mistake. They all let every single player have a ship. From the few episodes that I saw, I can say that this series is not about combats but its about friend ship, team work and comunity.
But they are making the biggest mistake of them all. Every single player will be alone of their own ship in the emptyness of space. Thats not how you build team work and a sense of achievements. Ships must be something big, something only a comunity, a group or a guild... can achieve.
Bleh w/e. Just my 2 cents.
PS: I speak french and Im really, but really tired so leave me alone with spelling or w/e. Thanks.

Okay, so I get that English is not your first language. What do you mean by "ship must not be welfare?" When I hear "welfare," I think of societal/governmental support of the poor. I don't think that's what you mean. ^_^

I think he means exactly that, ships provided in the game for players for no effort, as a donation from the start. Ie the term "welfare epics" is well known in WOW.
Subscribtions: EVE, SWTOR WOW, WAR, DDO, VG, AOC, COV, FFXI, GW, RFO, Aion
+plenty of F2P, betas, trials
Female Dwarf player: WOW, VG, WAR, DDO

Due to the recent economic crisis and spending cuts the light at the end of the tunnel was turned off. Sincerely, God.
I disagree, there must be npc crews. If they make this a forced grouping mmo, in that ships only work with crews then they've killed off most of there population before the game even gets launched. The only people left to play will be the hardcore trekies and roleplayers.
I, for one, do not want to sit around waiting for 2 hours for the rest of a crew to come online and then spend the next 2 hours staring at a representation of a console with nothing to do, all because someone somewhere wants to play Captain Kirk. If this is what sto is going to be about count me out.
I've seen every episode of star trek in its various forms and from what i saw the conflict and warfare is definitely a big portion of its appeal.
As for ships being 'handed out' isn't that how the military works? Captains don't buy ships they take command of then.
Captains EARN their ships by advancing in rank and being chosen as the BEST choice for command of a starship. Wesley Crusher doesn't count as norm for starfleet. lol.
If I'm in command of a large ship.... and a buddy wants to join my crew... Why can't he relieve the helmsman that's an NPC and take over? If a 3rd buddy wants to join up, why can't she relieve the tactical NPC? If they log off, NPC comes back...JUST LIKE IN THE SHOW!!!!
"number one, data, you're with me." they all jump up and some random red shirt takes the station.
If cryptic does anything less....I'm going to be pissed.

It won't be ready for release, but maybe they'll add it later down the line.
I can personally live without player controlled ships, people don't react as fast as an NPC would.
Yeah I can live without that at first too, maybe if it's not working out or people want more down the line (which is always the case) they'll release it with an expansion pack or add-on.
Let's see how captaining goes first :P
I tried the free trial for Pirates of the Carribean Online. While it is designed for a very young audience, it's gameplay suggests how I see ships and away team missions working in STOnline. Everyone has their own ship but others may board your ship and join in by manning the canons. You may also group up for efforts on shore to kill things.
I seemed to work pretty well at the time. It is very simplified tho. I would certainly hope this game gets way more in depth else it will be a total drag in a short period of time.
according to other posts the ability to replace npc crew with players is something thats being considered for the future, and although this is something i would advocate i would describe it as a possible benefit and not a must. Whether or not it actually gets put in will probably depend on how well they can get it to work, automatic replacements for people that crash may create a few bugs.
i also tried the free trial of potc(well it was free) and other people on ships there are essentially just being ferried from 1 place to another, they have an extra gun they can fire but the captain controls everything.
as for grouping in away mission(non-space stuff) thats already in.
