Press release and letter from david perry

What i find interesting is the bit about a free-to-play zone, seems like it'll be used as a trial, question then remains will it be only for NA users?

Yep here is part of the post and a clicky for the forum..

    +++ Press Release +++

US Publisher for The Chronicles of Spellborn

    – Acclaim will publish TCoS in North America –

Berlin, 2008/08/19: Frogster and the Dutch developer Spellborn are pleased to announce Acclaim Games as US publisher for The Chronicles of Spellborn. The renowned and tradition-steeped American company lead by industry veterans Howard Marks and David Perry has licensed the fantasy MMORPG as their focus title. Acclaim already has almost seven million registered users within their portfolio of currently five online games and is committed to start a large-scale marketing campaign until its launch in late 2008. Acclaim will give North American players a free-to-play zone while subscribers will be able to explore the entire virtual world.

David Perry is regarded as computer games developer guru, responsible for a number of blockbusters in the past 25 years. Having founded the developer studio Shiny Entertainment in 1993 he is one of the few internationally prominent masterminds of the games industry. His partner Howard Marks had been one of the co-founders of the new Activision in 1991, before he became owner of Acclaim in 2005.

Personally, David Perry is very excited about ‚TCoS’. “My poor old gaming PC is literally peppered with games in every conceivable language, and I’ve just kept playing, patiently waiting for that WHOA! moment. We’re tracking over 400 MMO’s around the world but the game that finally got us there is Spellborn. When we saw it running, our jaws literally dropped to the floor. This MMO is absolutely stunning, using the graphics engine from my friends over at Epic. We have millions of gamers that will be anxious to experience this amazing new game for free” comments David Perry, the USA Director for Spellborn on the successful deal.

What lies hidden, must be found

With The Chronicles of Spellborn players enter into an impressive online scenario with scenic landscapes, majestic cities and the remnants of an ancient civilization. Alone or with a party of allies, PC adventurers step into a huge fantasy realm consisting of varied shard worlds floating in the magic Deadspell Storm. Those who want to prevail in the grippingly staged combats of The Chronicles of Spellborn need to apply their mighty arsenal of spells, melee and ranged attacks skillfully. Battles with bloodthirsty creatures, hostile peoples and human opponents in PvP battles are waiting. An innovative and tactically challenging combat system with shooter-like controls and rotating skill deck provides a fresh breath of air for the dusty MMORPG genre. Thanks to the largely extended Unreal Engine 2.5, The Chronicles of Spellborn boasts stunning 3D graphics, spectacular effects and countless elaborate details. More information, images, videos and a form for the beta registration can be found on the official website: www.tcos.com.

    *tears of joy*

Ok, maybe not tears of joy, but I am glad that Spellborn will be seeing it's way to NA in the near future.

Yes, looks like this is one game to cross off the vaporware list! Not that I ever thought it was vaporware, but there have been doubts about it getting published. Hope it's as good as fans think and that us lot in Europe get a free-to-pay zone too!

It really is nice to hear that they finally got a US publisher.  Not sure if I will ever play this one though :(  Had this all come together a few months ago I would have but right now my sights are set on a soon to be released game and a couple recently announced ones.  What with work and going back to college full time there just aren't enough hours in a day to play em all.  I hope TCOS does good and is a successful game.  Cheers.

This is great news!!  I was becoming doubtful, but now I am pleased that they have finally announced their publisher.  Let's hope for a release date soon.

Now I have a hard choice:  WAR, AION, or TCoS?!?!

It isnt free to play,You will have access to a free to play zone, think along the line's of levels1-6 sort of thing then you will need to pay a sub to have access to the rest of the game and all it has to offer, basically a trial of the game is another way to look at it.

Only ONE zone will be free to play, see it as a trial, for the rest you'll have to pay monthly.

Now if they wanted a level based trial...why wouldnt they say,  "Play from levels 1 to 6 for free!" I honestly think they are going to implement a totally free zone and if that be the case, this might be a black spot on a game that has had very little info (either negative or positive) released out on it. It saddens me too and I hope more news comes along that tells me otherwise.

    Edit: some grammer errors

MMOs Played: I can no longer list them all in the 500 character limit.

well if they only make the first zone free, you'll be quite limited as a 'free player'. You can't go to the arena, you can only do the quests in the first zone, can't pick your subclass, etc.....

also don't forget that the game is heavily quest based, so if your out of quests in the first zone, you are sort of screwed since you can hardly get any experience from enemies :)

the game is been shown at the moment on GC Leipzig and if we're lucky we'll get some new info about it today or tomorrow :)

Acclaim is the publisher of 9 Dragons and 2 Moons.

Both of those games are crappy asian style F2P grinders and 9 Dragons has in-game ads right in the middle of your screen that are VERY annoying.

This is not a good omen imo. I was looking forward to this game but now I don't think so.

the reason those game sucked is because the developer focused on the ASIAN market and there they only care about hardcore PVP and have no problem with grinding. As with Codemasters, they were only the publishers and hardly had any influence regarding the development of the game and future updates.

Since Spellborn is been developed by a Western company, chances are the Western market is going to appreciate it a lot more then 9 dragons and 2 moons :)

and to be honest, they're going to give you a free trial so why not try it and afterwards you can still see if you'll play it or not :)

I will still try it if its free and I hope I am wrong...I am just saying that it being published by Acclaim is a negative hit on the game imo.

    We will see.

    We will see.

hopefully you'll like it, in the end it will still be a subscription based game, the free zone is probably like the trial area in The Saga of Ryzom :)

I wonder if this will be good or bad.  Acclaim seems like the publisher that does not invest into thier games.  All thier games have a significantly slow update cycle even ranging up to a year for a major update.  It seems more like Acclaim gobbles up as many games as it can, but never re-invests.  They leech of a games early success and don't support it after they made thier quick buck.  Much like K2 Networks.

However, unlike K2 who you know thier games have 2+ years of updates not applied to them.  when I researched 9dragons.  Thier developer is just plain slow.

The problem is that the devolper is a very small company and is out of resouces. They had two choices. Launch what they had a few months ago in europe and cross their fingers or cut a deal with somone with cash and finish the game and get a much broader distribution.  While I would agree that AKKclaim hugs balls it was clearly the lesser of two bad choices. At least this way those of us in the US get to at least play the game and TCOS gets some customers that are already playing Akkclaim games.
