=======Liu Xiang========

For those of you who do not know Liu Xiang was the former world record holder and gold medalist in the 110m hurdles at the 2004 Athens Games. He is the only Asian male to ever medal in a track and field event. Sadly at the 2008 Beijing Game he had to scratch the 110m hurdles because of a heel injury.

 From the videos and articles I have seen he was an inspiration for China. As the only Asian male to ever medal in track and field he was thrown into the spotlight and adored by billions. He knew that and at a meet in Europe where he had to pull out of due to an injury, he got the microphone and explained why to all the Chinese who had come to see him. He appeared to be still hurting but still went to the starting blocks. After another runner fall started he tore off the numbers on his leg and walked off.

From the expression on his face you could tell this was one of the hardest decisions of his life. I don't think anyone could relate to him on the amount of pressure he had. Just think of over 1 billion believing in you and eagerly waiting for you to race. I will repeat this again, he was the only Asian man to ever win a medal. The Olympics are in his country. Every chinese person knows his name. He knew that and thats why he did not scratch once the injury started to pain him. Watching his face as he walked off was one of the saddest  I had seen. I hope he returns to running and runs faster than ever.

    Should this be a blog instead of a thread V1C1? Just wondering cause it is just a statement and not a question or info into something which leaves us to draw no conclusions to the post.

    No idea who this guy is but I will google him and find out because I never thought an Asian would have a gold medal in any track and field. Grats to him I guess.

    I don't post much, give me a break. I doubt every thread started in this forum is a question or has useful info.

    Here is my favorite asian olympic athelete, Chen Xue:

  • This is unsurprising. China drives its atheletes into the ground. Those that can handle it are stars...for awhile, until they get broken down. Just look at Yao Ming. He could barely keep up during the last game I saw him in, he was in so much pain. He damn sure shouldn't be competing in the Olympics, he should be recovering from the slew of injuries he's inflicted on himself. And yet, after this China will push him to compete in all kinds of national contests in addition to the NBA. If he doesn't learn to tell them 'no,' (assuming he even can) he'll destroy himself prematurely.
