Beta impressions lvl 1-15 so far.

Hello,

I got into the Beta last week and have been playing every chance I got.  Black Orc btw :).

Before I get into the Pros/Cons I want to say a quick word on the PvP I have seen. Though right now PvP is rewarding and fun. As soon as you max level and no longer earn XP for yourself I can see this becoming a bit of a grind since then the only thing you will get out of it is Realm points for the city and gear. I love that fact that I can PvP to level, but at 40 I am not sure. Maybe it'll be awesome though, it is just a worry I have right now.

Pros:

   1. UI is great, minimal modding needed if any.

   2. 100% drop rate on quest items.

   3. Lots of public quests available to join in. Usually 3+ per zone.

   4. Haven't seen an instance yet though I am only 15.

   5. 1v1 rarely happens. Always have to act as a group or your side fails.

Cons:

   1. I am really struggling to get used to the combat action delay. The closest game I have seen to this is LOTR where they que up abilities. It is hard to press an attack and not have it happen immediately. Makes it so I have to actually look at the buttons instead of the field of battle to figure out what's "plan" I am on.

   2. PQs get swarmed because they are not instanced. This really isn't worth addressing because the alternative of instanced PQs would be worse. Just have to accept that sometimes you can't do a PQ because there are too few people available and sometimes there are too many for it to be worth it.

   3. Vent guilds will absolutely destroy pugs in any RvR instance. And guilds on vent don't do RvR instances once. They grind them since they get XP and realm points for their side. Though I plan on doing exactly this, it will really frustrate non-guilded casual players if they ever step inside one of these RvR instances.

So overall I still plan on buying this game at release, but if at the end of Beta and the first free month I cannot adjust to the lack of twitch combat I may have to say goodbye . I shall try though cause the rest of the game is tops.

Figured I should add in some credentials.

I started with Lineage 2 as my first MMO. Left that for EQ2 when it released. Eventually succumbed to WoW for a couple years and explored everything in that game pre-BC when I quit. Until War I have been on hiatus from MMOs and just enjoying the nice single players.

War is probably my last chance at an MMO since it is getting harder and harder to justify spending all my free time in a game world as opposed to the real world.

To counter your point #1, you must not have played since the Combat Responsiveness patch was put in. I have 0 delay now on all of my characters.

Yep the Combat Responsiveness patch fixed this like a week before all the CE testers came into the game. There still needs to be slight tweaking but it makes combat much much more fluid.

I definitely agree, this is a good summary of the Warhammer Online beta so far.

I was also worried about the PQ system.  It seems like guild could just grind the "good" ones over and over again .   Causing them to be camped and making it so nobody else can participate.  It is an amazing concept and I think one of the major selling points of the game.

The whole Lord of the Rings combat system really bothered me too.  I am not sure where they got it from or why they think it would make the game fun.   I am hoping they change it asap.

Well I was playing last night, did the patch come out this morning or something?

If they fix it then I will be ecstatic. That was my only real hangup with the game.

The patch has been in and I'm not sure what your talking about. When I hit an attack it fires off when i click it. Are you referring to the global cooldown? Every abilitiy triggers the global cooldown and locks you out of your attacks for like .5 secs or something along those lines. They did this so animations don't get cluttered and interrupt each other. Plus if you think your character isn't swinging their weapon enough it is because auto attack animations are overrided by your special attacks to not clutter or interrupt each other.

There are four of five PQ's in one map area, how are the PQs Swarmed?

The only problem I have had with PQ is that I found one and I was the only one in it. So for me you can never have to many. But this sould easy up once the game has been out for a month or so.

The thing I usually see is that the first PQ you come across is really swarmed because it's the closest, this leaves any others with little players to complete them. Hence, either too many or too little. I've actually been in areas where i was the only person doing the PQ. Eh..

Prolly just cause everyone has just joined Beta. I doubt it will be like this a few months after release when the level distribution is more even in stead of there being 10000000 level 1-10s.

the easiest solution for this is to start the first stage of whatever PQ is underpopulated and flag yourself as interested in forming an open party. Plus advertise yourself in regional chat too, but people will start to come especially if the PQ is making progress. I've noticed as the stages progress, more and more people start to magically pop up. The problem is a lot of people do not like taking initiative and getting the ball rolling, but once someone does the others usually follow.

One way to fix this, get a guild.  It would be really hard to do anything about this anyway.  It would be impossible to ban vent usage in game and would be detrimental to the entire game if they made it so you couldn't queue with friends

Well, this is true also because the server populations are relativley low with the ammount of people actually invited.

The areas are usually populated also because you will have at least 3-4 quests in each PQ area so your going to be in the PQ wheteher you want to or not.

At launch these areas should ALL be populated.  Also I think the 1-10 lvls will always be populated because there are so many classes to try on each side.

Well this would go with the devs plan. In their podcasts I remember seeing them always emphasizing the importance of being in a guild and working together as a unit. So if your unguilded and getting steamrolled, it will probably encourage you to grab a couple buddies and band together. We could only hope you will try to form some sort of tactical unit after a while.

what he said, execpt to add that in the PQ areas are also mobs you need for personnal quests as well, and if the PQ  pop is huge, you may have to wait until it clears out so you can get the mobs you need for your quest.

When I said i had "time", i meant virtual time, i got no RL "time" for you.

Let me understand - WAR lets you que up the abilities ?

Because for example Vanguard also have "delay" but it does not let you que up ability , so you all the time have to look at skill icons  ... and that sucks

They are scattered about in a logical manner. If you look at the map it will tell you the general area associated with the quest. Maybe I'll upload some pics.

    To the OP:

Honestly, Black Ork is one of the most boring classes. It's just like the Swordmaster, and the gameplay is stale. It's: 123, 123, 4, 123. All of your battles will be like that, PvE at least unless your tanking in a group.

As for animations, yeah the responsiveness is there but it doesn't trigger most of the time especially if you have a channelling attack. It's still buggy.

On the flipside, the game is very playable. My main problem is these:

1.) Item Drop Mechanic and PvE Gameplay.

Once you finish a Public Quest or let's say capture an enemy keep you are placed in a rank system. Rank high enough, I think it's top 5 you get a "bag". You can right click the bag and choose from what seems to be randomly generated rewards. This is fine, but all in all it's rather weak.

The regular drops you get on mobs are also a little unexciting. But again, these are PvE elements. Honestly, I feel that the PvE portion of Warhammer AoR is really underdeveloped. The PQ's are fun, but I played WoW and the instances there where much funner imo. If you don't like instances or really long PvE raids, then you won't care that much. Again, it seems the PvE portion of the game was designed as an afterthought while the RvR is fully fleshed out.

    What I like about Warhammer

    2.) RvR

From the little I've played the game seemed to be really inclined to this mechanic. Everything else seems subsituted in someway to this. You have scenarios which you can play in, think deathmatch rooms, or go to contested areas. The areas are limited but your stats will be adjusted to remain competitive. What hurts it though are the combat animations and the smoothness of gameplay. Also be afraid of the Keep doors. It will take 20min of direct attacking at a door from about a full party plus a catapult to take one down, and once you're inside they respawn. This is an unrealistic problem though since taking a keep is suppose to include many more people. It was fun though even with a small party.

There are some other issues such as class playability, some classes are much funner to play than others, an example is the Chosen and Black Orc. Where on paper they both match up but the Chosen is much more fun to play.

Standard MMO issues all in all, if you really like MMO PvP on a large scale you shouldn't really be afraid of dissapointment. WAR will deliver on that point.

no it does not allow you to queue abilities, and i do not believe they intend adding ability queues. although this can always change.

Nope, it looked to be a pretty standard request from when I was browsing the CB forums.

  • VirgoThreeVirgoThree Member UncommonPosts: 1,198

This is to Obiyer's post regarding classes. It is really just a matter of opinion on what a person enjoys to play. For myself I've had the most fun playing as Bright Wizard, Warrior Priest, Swordmaster and Black Orc. I liked how SM and BO work off the builder mechanic and you can chain some different attacks. At low level your options are very limited, but I remember using a R40 SM and I had so many options to use for builders.

  • koranusokoranuso Member Posts: 29

Yeah Black Orc may not be the most exciting class but I just like being indestructible. I enjoy being the one who capture the flag or artifact and then laughing when people try to take me down.

When release comes I will prolly try other classes too. I am an alt-aholic for sure.
