I've played the game and I thought that the game was pretty good. The community is nice and the RvR is great and lots of fun. The only thing is that the character creation isn't all that great. The choice of classes is kind of interesting and cool but like I said the creation is pretty bland. There are a wide variety of armors and weapons and customizing that you can get for you character. All in all the game is pretty good but not perfect.
I would recommend DAOC to anyone who has not tried it. I've been playing for a while now. Even when I play other games, I maintain my DAOC account because I always go back. If you decide to try it and find yourself as an Alb on Merlin server, send me a PM or email. I'll be glad to help you out.
I started with DAoC at its release and played for a couple months but realized even before then that my days would be short. DAoC was a nice breath of fresh air with the combination of PvE and PvP, but the developers really missed the mark on the complete package. . .by implementing the PvP aspect of the game. Aside from my view that any PvE game (like EQ) is tedious and boring and a perversion to player interactive role-playing. . .nothing there I cant get from playing an RPG platform without having to dish out the cash to play on-line, PvP was rewardless, meaningless and continues to be.
There was and is significant balencing problems, and entire 50th level characters were rendered usless as a result with no warning or discussion. It is also boring in the area of leveling, very.
Finally, the PvP is a flop. It is a diversion, not a part of the storyline or of any importance. The only fun I had was in the very first battlegrounds for lowe players, because it was smaller and much less tedious.
DAoC is a very fun game. For someone who hasn't played - it can easily be a great deal of obsessive fun for 3-4 months.
Ultimately, there are problems with RvR and class balance. Not that Mythic doesn't try to correct it, it simply is very difficult (or impossible) to get perfect.
If your "goal" is to produce a high level character, disregarding all the lore/adventure in the game: ultimately you will be frustrated.
But the game itself is one of the best MMORPG running now (WoW and EQ2 will be better IMO).
The RvR can easily be sampled by going through 3-4 battlegrounds at the lower levels, rather than having to power level to 50 to find out you dislike it.
Easily worth the cost of trying... and the Catacombs update looks promising as well (not sure of the release date on it).
If your goal is to purchase an overly exaggerated screen saver than DAoC is your game. The PvE is like a wack-a-mole carnival game. . .nice for the first 30 seconds and the RvR is nothing more than a waste of time.
I didn't enjoy the game overall. They had a HUGE lack of enviroments (castle here, trees there, open field, that's it). The tradeskills, don't even bother. You will fall asleep trying to do it. The whole aspect of this game is level grind your as* to level 50, then RvR.
Though some people really enjoy this game. So i'd try a free trial and see for yourself wether you like this game or not.

I've played DAoC off and on since a month after the release, and it is a good game IMO. However, we have only a few months (HOPEFULLY!!!) until World of Warcraft comes out. I suggest waiting for that, when I played the stress test, it blew my thoughts of DAoC out of the water.

I will admit that DAoC isn't the best game in the world but it's also no where near the worst. I find the RvR to be fun and yes they could up it a bit ad for scenery but it's still not all that bad of a game. My final thought it that I will agree that you should try the free trial and found out for yourself what it is like.

Wait for World of Warcraft.
I would never reccommend DAOC to anyone.
