I'm starting not to believe in Darkfall

david361107david361107 Member UncommonPosts: 279

I've looked into Darkfall over the past couple of years and I still just see the same old stuff. I'm beginning to believe this isn't even a game anymore. If we do not see a new video or some real gameplay in the next month or so I'm going to know that the case. It's a great idea but I just don't see this ever happening.

I've thought about this project for quite some time now.

I believe they started out with grand ideas and just could never pull it off. Right now I truly believe they are at a standstill. They have ideas, but NOT the financial backing necessary to finish this game.

I think the distribution deal they worked on was nothing more than their attempt to garner an investor.

That now makes at least some sense to me. They try and get a company exited about distributing a game, and get them to "invest" in their company so they can finish it someday.

It's at least a plausible explanation.

Really, there are many, many clues here. One of the latest is them showing up at a Greek gaming conference with OLD videos and screenshots. Ask yourself. Why would they do this? The answer would have to be, that's all they have to show. What other answer can you come up with.

Well, anyway. I don't think they have enough financial backing to come anywhere near completing this game. And that would answer a slew of skeptical questions we've been discussing for these many months.

Darkfall is legendary for being probable vaporware (complete with fanatical fanboys to defend it), to the same extent that Star Wars Galaxies is infamous for having been ruined by Sony and the NGE and Lineage II is well known for being the grindiest MMORPG ever created.

Darkfall is a paragon of its paradigm, though Duke Nukem does overshadow it outside the MMORPG genre.

Darkfall have become a concept, or a symbol!

It have since long drifter out from believe or not belive. Its more about if you accept the concept or not in your reality.

    Damn i got spaced there?

obviously because they're the only complete videos they've made, and they're less than 1year old so they're still good enough for a random conference presentation. you do also realise they're making a new, comprehensive video to release this month, right?

that would answer a slew of sceptical questions we've been discussing for these many months.

the only sceptics around here are people who choose to ignore the facts: there is plenty of screenshot & video evidence of all main aspects of the game stretching back for 7 years, there's finally a stated release date, and a signed distributor on board.

    it's obviously coming out.

the fact that Tasos and Aventurine have to try do business with a company like this that has absolutely no experience in the gaming industry and they have to SETTLE for a company like this just shows what kind of piece of shit Darkfall truly is that no other "real" video game publisher will touch it for ALL of Europe.

They don't really need experience, AVE will just have to mass produce DVDs with games instead of with movies. Aventurine needed a distributor that won't interfere in any way with the product. AVE offers them this and they have signed an MoU.

Obviously coming out? You think you're the first person to utter those words? People back in 2003 said it was obviously coming out.

Anyway. You could be correct, I'm not discounting the possibility. I'll give you that.

But... You seem pretty darn sure for someone who has NEVER seen the product.

And... as for the video you claim is definately coming out THIS month. Well... According to my calendar, there are only 12 days left in August. And.... Just four months left till 2009. This, for a game supposedly releasing THIS year.

I'm not the sceptic. Not really. I know what I see, and I judge the game for what I can see, NOT what I can't see. I choose not to rely solely on the word of one unknown individual in Greece from which I base my whole argument for the game, as you are doing.

But... You say, and I'll quote. "It's OBVIOUSLY coming out."

    We shall see.

Tasos speaks for the company remember, he's no just an individual.

    I'm judging on the following:

    1) an official company committment to releasing in 2008, they've never said 'officially' before.

    2) a signed distribution deal

    3) high quality of graphics in recent screenshots indicating they are in final polish stages

    the video will be #4.

They made a mistake back in 2005. They thought their product was finished and gave high hopes to the community about beta. A mistake even big companies make, but unlike them instead of pleasing the mass by hyping up, releasing it unfinished, getting the preorder money and letting the game die they continued to work on it until it's ready to hit the shelves. If they had released it then it would've been long forgotten. They want to make a game able to compete on the MMO market and not just another good idea failed because of rushing to release.

You do realize that one of the things that is required to acheive that is actually releasing a product in a timely manner and not developing forever.

I am going to build a cool new car starting tomorrow but I 'am not going to release it for 7 years. I am sure it will still sell well.

    mistake?  lol

You have zero business sense along with Tasos and Aventurine which is why they've already failed miserably. Those big companies understand the importance of actually releasing a product. That's exactly why all those companies are actually successful and making millions of dollars -- BECAUSE THEY ACTUALLY RELEASE PRODUCTS.

Aventurine is a complete failure as a company. Not a single product on the market. Never created anything beyond working on Darkfall for the last 5 years. Completely in debt most likely from working on this for all these years and seeing no returns.

This is reality. Take a seat. Stay awhile.

    I hope you're right.

There really have been far too many disappointing mmo releases - games which, if they'd lived up to their potential, could have given WoW a good kick in the goolies and us mmo players a better gaming experience.

Personally, I'd rather see a potentially great game's release date pushed back years, than have it released 'on time' and flop. Cos right now, even though there are lots of mmos on the market, the selection is kind of dismal.

I won't get my hopes about Darkfall or any other mmo in development, but I will continue to watch this space.

7 years is not forever. WoW was developed 5 years, AoC too. Both games needed extensive patching (AoC couldn't be saved even by that). 7 years is a realistic development time for an MMO of such magnitute by an indie company. The reason so many people got bored from waiting and decided to scream "vapor" instead is because Aventurine announced the game too early, while the other companies waited 3-4 years.

I am going to build a cool new car starting tomorrow but I 'am not going to release it for 7 years. I am sure it will still sell well.

It won't sell because other people will build better cars in the meantime. Do you see any other MMOs like Darkfall currently on the market or releasing this year? The only thing a game could suffer from because of long development is shitty graphics and Darkfall looks amazing.

Yes, they rush through all that development crap (who needs it, eh? We'll just buy ourselves some more positive reviews!) and go to the release - the fat money. EA releases products, SOE releases products, both multimillion dollar companies but thing is they don't release quality products, they release products that sell. Games for the masses. Their products are in the same category as McDonalds and pop music.

There are a lot of companies that haven't yet released something, they all fail? It's a failure to sacrifice hype for a quality product? Funcom released products right? They released them in a timely manner and didn't develop them forever. How come they got the nickname Failcom from their customers recently?

This is reality. Take a seat. Stay awhile.

Darkfall is, until a gameplay video and the promised free to play Test version come along, a myth.

I won't believe in a game that promises to be everything and better at that until I actually see it with my own two eys and am able to play it as Tasos has promised. Until then, I will continue to doubt that Darkfall will ever release in any state resembling the thing they talked about.

Is it really so difficult to understand that line of reasoning?

No I see better ones. If I wanted to play a sandbox PvP game with outdated graphics built on 1999 ideas then I would just go play Asheron's Call 1 on Darktide. .........alone..... or Shadowbane... alone..

Why the fuck do people think this game is so revolutionary?  It is not different in the least. It's a generic sandbox PvP game. Big deal?

Asheron's Call was released 9 years back and Shadowbane pretty much sucks. Darkfall is the only sandbox that should be able to compete on today's MMO market. WoW is pretty much Everquest's successor, but UO and AC's successor is nowhere to be found. Darkfall is the MMO people are hoping for to fill this gap and that's why it's a big deal. Revolutionary doesn't mean a completely new idea, it means something different from the norm, which at the moment is boring Everquest clones.
