Character names in WOW will be very limited

Immersion-Breaking
We have gone to great lengths to ensure that your experience in the world of Azeroth is as enjoyable and immersive as possible. However, this immersion can be quickly broken when you see the stately Tauren Hunter named “IOwnsU” or the imposing Night Elf Druid “ErnestBorgnine.” In an attempt to maintain the suspension of disbelief, we will be disallowing the following types of names from World of Warcraft.
The following five categories are all considered “Immersion-Breaking”:
Partial or Complete Sentences
This category includes names which:
• Are not fantasy-based and consist of multiple words strung together
• Examples: “Inyourface”, “Welovebeef”, “Howareyou”

Pure Gibberish
This category includes names which:
• Consist of a string of letters which do not produce a pronounceable name
• Examples: “Asdfasdf”, “Jjxccm”, “Hvlldrm”

References to Pop Culture Icons or Personas
This category includes names which:
• Are references, both clear and masked, to well known people or characters
• Examples: “Britneyspears”, “Austinpowers”, “Batman”

Contain “Leet” or “Dudespeak”
This category includes names which:
• Consist of language existent only in online communication
• Examples: “Roflcopter”, “xxnewbxx”, “Roxxoryou”

Titles
Fantasy titles should be earned trough the mechanics of the game, and should not be recreated through character naming. This category includes names which:
• Consist of any title prefix or suffix attached to a characters name be it fantasy-based or not
• Examples: “KingMike”, “ErictheBrave”, “PresidentSanchez”

I always enjoyed looking at other people's funny and creative names. I guess we won't have any of that here. We will be stuck with boring randomly generated names like Aldn or Sinfrn,

Oh well, I guess the game will still be fun, but its kind of lame.

I agree with some of the rules in the naming policy but I dont see problems with most of the names there like the Gibberish or leetspeak, I dont see whats so bad about that. Its funny see someone named xXxOWNEDYOUxXx and dieing in ever PvP battleimage

Oh yes, how lame that we wont be seeing d00dz running around with their craptastic names to spoil our fantasy rpg experience. ::::12::

I don't see anything on that list that technically isn't prohibited in all the other MMO's out there. The point to ponder is if they will enforce it long term, or if they'll let it slide after a month or two.

ghoul31 your what the game doesnt need if you dont support it.  It is not immersion breaking, but immersion making. . .their policy that is.

I just have to say kudos to the wow devs for being the first game to finally put their foot down in this area.

It is disheartening to say the least seeing people running around the game with unimaginative and some downright offensive names. Its an RPG which should set at least some sort of precedent for coming up with your own unique name that is neither a rip off of someone elses idea nor a play on words.

This game will be just that much better knowing the little kiddies wont be getting their way.

Ya i have to agree with you guys. If you are going to spend a decent amount of time playing a game you should put some effort into naming the character that you are playing. If you think about it philisophically the character is YOU, so if you name him/her *fartknocker* then that is most likely what you are / how you and everyone eho knows you views you.

Its not hard to pick out a cool name that has relevance to your character. If you play a human , undead pick up a copy of the Illiad or Odessey that has a ton of cool names. Dwarves , NE - lord of the rings. the rest can be from the above as well.
It is probably just me but I like having a cool name!::::34::

I agree with you Paradise2.  I don't pay any attention to someone [even high levels] with a stupid name.  I might laugh, say "Nice name", but that's it.

I can't see myself doing business with "Obbe Wan Donobe"

I've seen that in SWG too... it's annoying how many different ways you can spell out "Chewbaca"

This game is only for "serious" roleplayers. No fun is allowed.

On the other hand, seeing someone named PimpMastah just enhances the thrill of killing them should you reside on the PvP server.

And while some people do come up with 'weird' names that are funny, and creative, most are eye gougingly bad. My ode to creativity was a Blademaster in DAoC named Fixme Imbroken. I think we were going to make the surname Imagimp originally, but opted for Imbroken once we got him to 10. I also had a Bonedancer named Flavoroftheweak, since everyone and their mother had one on Mordred.

there are some things i dont mind like random products or companies like jello or peanutbutter or something like that. what bugs me are names like everyother person in D2 has like XxXxFIREchixorzlolzzz1 or BigP!mP or things like that

  • SkidosSkidos Member UncommonPosts: 17

I just hope they include a name generator, as my names usually lack of creativity ::::35::

  • tehfrokstehfroks Member Posts: 35

I agree with Annekynn names like XXcloudXX or XXseprothXX are just lame. Ive never seen a name thats been funny maybe one but thats all. Like it says put your name in the box.

Overall, I like the new policy. I think the banned stuff isn't much of a loss for the gamers.  It will make the world feel more consistent.  No SN's popping up in the world...Well less of them. People will have to be more creative when they invent themselves

Eh, way to hamper the creativity and humor of your subscribers.

I remember the hilarious names in d2 that I would see floating around:

    Omgstfuplzkthx, (in hardcore mode): LastAttemptI,LastAttemptII,LastAttemptV

(popular hardcore name) Deadmeat, Deadmanwalking (melee necro lol)

    Fakdyersister,Fakdyermom,Fakyou

    .... oh well.

There is no way in hell they can go through all the phonetics (ex. Fak, Kant, Beetch, Beatch), so why bother?

It's not like confining younger players to a small set of names will make them anymore mature or courteous.

"Oh, what sad times are these when passing ruffians can say 'ni' at will to old ladies. There is a pestilence upon this land. Nothing is sacred."

This is a sequence of characters intended to produce some profound mental effect, but it has failed.

I agree with Blizzard, It's so annoying when ppl do that. Some people don't know that it's so FRIKKIN EASY to make up a game name. I can make 20 original names (as in if you put it in yahoo, nothing comes up) in about an hour or less.image

Do that or just go into a baby names site . . .geezzz. Computer geeks. Ha Ha Ha . . .image

    Thumbs up to Blizzardimageimage

You see, every mammal on this planet instinctively develops a natural equilibrium with their surrounding environment, but you humans do not. You spread to an area, and you multiply, and you multiply, until every natural resource is consumed. The only way you can survive is to spread to another area. There is another organism on this planet that follows the same pattern. Do you know what it is? A virus. Human beings are a disease, a cancer of this planet.-Mr.Smith

Hahaha! Theres an orc called PoopOnAStick and a tauren named SirFartALot! So funny! Haha! Haha... Ha... Ok thats funny for about 3 seconds. Then it becomes silly/stupid/dumb/lame (pick one) and serves to only worsen the fantasy/rpg experience in the game.
