World of Warcraft: Battlegrounds: Warsong Gulch

StraddenStradden Managing EditorMember CommonPosts: 6,696

World of Warcraft Correspondent Robert Duckworth pens this article giving some details and tricks for the Warsong Gulch Battleground in WoW.

The new Sands of the Ancients battleground is fast approaching along with the rest of Wrath of the Lich King. Just because there is a new battleground does not mean that it is going to replace the old ones though. All four currently in The Burning Crusade, from Warsong Gulch to Eye of the Storm, are going to remain an integeral part of PvP life in World of Warcraft. At this point even the same tokens and the system of secondary PvP rewards through honor is planned. So while there have been no changes announced to the old battlegrounds, that does not mean they don't deserve a look. The next few articles will cover the battlegrounds in depth and discuss the important finer points of each one.

I can't get the entire article to load, but that won't stop me from posting my thoughts on the pvp and battlegrounds in world of warcraft.  I've been playing WoW off and on since the game came out, and pvp has never  been the focus of this game.  It seems as though it's just something there to give the pve raiders and casual players something to do from time to time.  Players are rewarded for putting in enough time (it takes weeks or months of it to obtain a full set of battleground gear) in the battlegrounds to get some old gladiator gear.  While I don't have a problem with that, I have always had major problems with Blizzard's laziness when it comes to the old, stale, battlegrounds that exist in the game today.  These things don't take long to make, and once you get a proven concept to work, take warsong gulch capture the flag or arathi basin for example... they could easily make several other maps for each one to provide some variety.  I would also have liked to see some brand new battlegrounds introduced for free (after all we pay $15 a month, give us some pvp content) during the past two years, not have to wait until the second expansion where the battleground focus is on boring siege crap.

I am so sick of WoW.  I am real excited to be playing Warhammer soon where the company actually focuses on pvp content.  WoW is fun for new players, but for many of the old vets we are let down.  Even some pve raiders are bored with little to no content while they wait for the expansion.

Since this article is about warsong gulch tips, and it doesn't even seem to work, I'll post a few tips how to win in that battleground and keep it fun at the same time.

Winning with a pickup group of players in warsong gulch is really dependent on what level your teammates are, if their equipment is decent, if they play their character well, if they are trying to win the battleground or just farm kills, what kinds of classes are present, and if they communicate well. So really any number of things can go badly or well.

Having a healer or two will help things a lot for your side, but you should protect them as best you can, so they can keep doing what they do best.   Druids can be great flag runners in warsong gulch, but even they will need help getting the flag out of the enemy base, running the flag in middle field and your base.

Focus on flag returns and escorting the flag carrier only.  Far too many people ignore what is going on, therefore not helping their team.  Sometimes if you spot an enemy healer or druid (probable flag carrier) who is alone in middle on their way to your base, it is a good thing to take them out if you can, but always be aware of the flag status.  Get to where people need help fast.

Grab the berserk buff  often from one of the two huts if you are a dps class.  Too many people ignore it.  Warsong gulch should be a fast paced game if played right.  Causing 30% more damage to your enemies, especially when trying to return a flag, is always a good thing.

Last tip I will share is how to break a turtle (when each side has the enemies flag and has several defending him/her).  While Blizzard has recently made the flag carriers weaker once they hold the flag for 10 minutes or so, you can ensure better chances of a flag return if you and your teammates wait at the bottom of the enemy's ramp area to group up so that you can all go in together, instead of one by one getting picked off.  Communicate!

There are so many more little things you and your teammates can do in a warsong gulch game to play better.  Most players learn these from experience, as long as they remember it's a team game with real objectives.  It's not about who has the most killing blows.

I guess this is good for new players to the game, but veterans will just skip this article.  We want new info on new battlegrounds, and it seems like WoW is only releasing one BG map every expansion.  That's way too slow for me.  Ever since Eye of the Storm came out, i've tried at least 4+ MMOs.  I don't have enough patience to wait for their "quality at a snail's pace" approach in this genre.

Looks like BGs will remain in WotLK like the cow's fifth leg. Such as today. And WoW will remain a mix of PvE raiding and cybersport. Nice. It's all i'd like to know about WotLK... WAR now is everything (in MMORPG) i'm interesting of.

The lack of communication is one thing I have a big problem with on Shadow Council. WSG 10-19 is full of twinks that think they don't need any help and the majority of my groups refuse to leave a group behind to defend the flag. It is the community, not the game that is making me seriously consider playing WAR when it is released. After all, DAoC was my first and most favorite MMORPG.

You also have a lot of teenagers playing the game and it is especially annoying playing WSG with them. They'll stand around dancing around with the flag, instead of capping it or you see people arguing about how uber they are and how twinked out they are over the next guy. I honestly couldn't believe my eyes when I witnessed my first twink WSG argument while we were supposed to be accomplishing an objective.

MMORPG's w/ Max level characters: DAoC, SWG, & WoW

    Currently Playing: WAR
Preferred Playstyle: Roleplay/adventurous, in a sandbox game.

Didn't WSG come out like 2 or 3 years ago???

What's next? Strat guide for Gyruss? Oh wait, that's not an MMO.

That's about the sum of my experience as well. I've played this game on and off since the day of release and they make a habit of releasing 3 months of content every 6 months. It's not enough. I don't roll alts, which puts me out of the game fairly early. Surely it can't be that hard to add some more stuff to do?

They do it in the non-twink BGs as well, but they are trolls just like on the forum. Most people ignore them, and the few people who don't are usually "i pwn u lolol" idiots just like the trolls themselves. I think my favorites are the ones who think people shouldn't be allowed to enter Battlegrounds unless they have a perfect Season 4 gear set. How do you think those people get their gear in the first place?

We all know that Blizzard needs to revisit each battleground and tweak them.

Ditch Battlegrounds and bring them to the real world.

But that's the thing, isn't it? Every time you go to a BG, your goal is clear, to kill! But when you go out in the world, you pick a PVP server and you have your fantasy life, killing fantasy boars with added danger of PVP. For purely PVP, it would make sense to do all PVP everywhere, but we already know this isn't a purely PVP game.

I despise Warsong Gulch.  The other BGs I tried were fun but this piece of trash shows just how lacking Blizzard is when it comes to good PvP design and still needs to be cut from the game.

I totally agree.  This is by far the worst BG of the bunch.  Too many long games and not enough honor.

Sounds like a pretty decent overview of WoW, on the whole. Heh.

Roll on new games for me to play, so I don't have to keep returning to Azeroth just to play a game that doesn't crash, has a UI that doesn't feel "clunky", has a reasonably large amount of content to work through and has quests that, on the whole, "just work." Even if Blizzard is continuing to prove it prefers to cater more to the whiny, mouth-breathing masses, I can't say that about any other game; more's the pity.

    La la la.

Warsong Gulch has its good times, while also having it's ultimate lows - which it has more of. Given it was the first one, most people didn't seem to care about the fact that it was Capture the Flag. Two/three years later and the concept is now lame; as lame as the rewards and what you have to go through to get them. I never liked this one, and Arathi Basin isn't too far off my hatred. I even hated Eye of the Storm, and most can see why. It's just WSG + AB on an even smaller map. What is the new one going to be?

There wasn't really anything redeeming in PvP for my two 70s. My Mage was the first, and he was a miniature allstar at PvP at 60 before the expansion pack with his crappy blue gear. I could never get raids, but because I knew the mechanics of the class I could deal well. All about it faded and in my eyes he was useless when most of the people you're fighting happen to be druids, rogues, and warlocks. The Paladin got some of the first Season Gear but they upgraded and I've already made my reservations for WAR. The PvP is horrible.

WSG is probably the worst, most boring battleground in WoW. It routinely goes on for an excessive amount of time, and the honor gained in it is paltry compared to AV, and sub-par compared to AB.
