Number wise, without a doubt it will be the #2... I'll even dare to go forth and say that its the only MMO since WoW to have an actual chance of taking down WoW. My reasoning behind that is simple, everyone I know who is addicted to warcraft has been keeping up with WAR news more than I have and know as much about WAR as they do about Litch King.

However, numbers don't say anything about quality, just look at AoC for proof. WAR will never be as good as LOTRO or EQ(both I and II). It will be fun and addictive, but the depth of the stories and the great community will be missing.

    I wasn't too sure for a while..

But after watching numerous videos I am starting to get very excited.

The combat might not be as twitchy as WoW but, I prefer the extra classes, new zones, new items, quests, places to explore etc over WoW's outdated and limited gameplay.

My guess is this game will reel in 5 mil + subscribers. I am prepared to eat those words too.

have you read all the information going around since the NDA has been lifted. obviously not because you wouldnt even have created this thread. people have been testing for a year, and i barely heard any gripes about it. i tested conan for 4 months and hated it. couldnt say anything cause they kept the NDA up because they knew it was incomplete garbage. WAR is so good, they knew they could let the NDA go.

yeah people are talking abut this game, and there is a bit of advertising, but it is not mythinc that is hyping the game, its the players.

games like AoC where you see HUGE page wide ads every where, and on every magazine is kinda scary.  I have seenvery few big ads for warhammer yet it is constantly getting word of mouth.  now that the NDA is lifted and more info is coming out from the testers it will get a bit more hype, but from the people who actuly know and have played it.

ill take the advice of one average gamer over 10 full page ads and a gamespot review any day.

the missing link in a chain of destruction.

All spelling and typographical errors are based soely on the fact that i just dont care. If you must point out my lack of atention to detail, please do it with a smile.

Yeah, MTV ran those adds for free.  Everyone knows that.  Plus a lot more people come to MMORPG.com than watch MTV anyway.

    Good catch, Korr.

Im in the closed beta and im really hooked on this game already =P

  • bmcinvaillebmcinvaille Member Posts: 209

Closed beta here to. I haven't played in over 2 weeks or more. Not because it wasn't good but because I was getting hooked and didn't see my chars wiped lol. So I layed off myself till OB and Headstart come out. I haven't had this much fun in an MMO in a long time. They were right when they said you will not be saying hmmm what can I do now it will be "WOW theres so much to do where do I start?".

I tried white lion (loved this one),shaman (was ok not a big healing fan but he could bust some chops),Marauder (fav by far and a very good melee class), and I played a engineer which was one of the funnest ranged classes. One class I didnt get into was the squig herder I do not know why or could I tell you why i didnt like it or give reasons. I started one fought some dwarfs and deleted him. But they listen so well to everything and care about the game so much it was greating being in the beta and having a company listen to what to change and such. And this game was super stable already I do not think i ever crashed and i played for hours on end.

It certainly won't become "#2" (depends on what you mean by that) but it won't flop like AoC either. It should be good, and not a trainwreck like AoC was with overhype by the actual game makers. It should be overhyped but not by WAR's creators (they've actually been quite humble) but by the players. I expect the game to be good but to not blow my socks off. People are expecting way too much out of this game and are going to be sorely disappointed.

EDIT: In the long run (meaning 6 months after release) it will probably retain numbers anywhere from 250k to 500k. If AoC survived it would have probably made it up to 1 mil along with AoC but that time of great competition for both companies has passed. Now WAR has nothing to worry about (unless you count WoW, but that's almost in it's own charts of comparisons).

If it retains 250k-500k then it is #2 in the western MMORPG market, just saying...

To make it to number 2 will require a lot more work on the game. The core RvR part of the game is basically solid. But to get the kind of numbers to be that successful will require the PvE and other parts of the game to be filled out a bit more.

Also RvR success will be very sensitive to population imbalances. If too many people feel that they can't win because of pop imbalances then it will hurt the game.  As long as the devs keep working hard to make the game better and fill the content gaps while keeping focused on "fun and simple" I would not be suprised at all if they do have that kind of hit.

However If Mythic stumbles and they let a bad rep fester then people will bail, call it failhammer and run back to WoW when Wotlk comes out.

ok, busted there.  yeah i dont watch mtv, hell i barely watch tv.  right now im in Iraq and my media is limited to internet and magazines.  so i guess my point is invalid due to the fact that i am in the middle of no where and havent had the chance to be completely bombarded with hype.

or it just shows how fierce the AoC Hype was when even some one with as limitd interaction as me could get overwhelmed by it.

the missing link in a chain of destruction.

Smoke more crack.... WoW is a social sensation, WAR got geek written all over it.

Besides people here really doesn't know what Blizzard stand fore and has proven again and again.

people whine over the most weirdest things to Blizzard, it's a sign of luxury, which funny enough came with Blizzard, ever since WoW games who comes out too early will flop tenfold, wasn't the case before WoW, i actually myself happily played mmorpgs who had a little too many mysterious bugs, but after that game.... whoooosh, one bug and it's a grand fail, somehow blizzard make sure that their bugs aren't "OMFG DIE!!!" it's more like "WTF, haha lol".

Will WAR be grand? probably but only for some of the ones who played mmorpgs before WoW, include the pvp whores whose first mmo was wow.

    oh well. we will see....

i think this game might be overly hyped..

  • XennithXennith Member Posts: 1,244

this game is both massively overhyped and overly derided. there doesnt seem to be anyone in the middle ground between "WAR is fantastic" and "WAR is worse than bad, i burnt my hdd to get rid of it" but thats true of most new games.

Im optimistic, but trying to temper my expectations.

oh and btw, asking an either/or question and giving the options as "yes" and "no"... probably not so great.

The game will have over 1,000,000 subscriptions in under a year. At the 2 year mark, the game will probably have around 1,600,000 to 2,000,000 subscribers and probably the first expansion will have been released. It will keep climbing.

It will never reach the 10 million mark set by Blizzard, but no game released in the next 2 years will either. It won't be until Blizzard releases another MMO based off one of their other IP's until that 10 million mark will be broken.

Personal predictions. Hopefully I can look back at this post in 2 years and say " Yep I was right ".
